I have just completely run out a day ideas for stepmum and younger daughter and ordered another three because obviously I had to have one as well to demonstrate how it works 🤣
Literally, every person I know open down the land has one

If you're finding the price of the sachets a bit much and have a Costco account try using their Chocolate Chips:

www.costco.co.uk/Grocery-Household/Grocery-Delivery/Kirkland-Signature-Chocolate-Chips-204kg/p/903681

Whizz them up in your blender/food processor and store ready for use. Under 20p per mug.

Reviews for the Aldi one are very mixed, I've never seen one or used one though.

whoruntheworldgirls · 10/12/2022 22:28

I got one from my bosses last Christmas and love it! It really is superior hot chocolate, the salted caramel, mint and orange are gorgeous!!!!

whoruntheworldgirls · 10/12/2022 22:28

Oooo as is the caramel latte

PeskyYeti · 10/12/2022 22:34

I use mine all year around a couple of times a month, husband who bought it for me used it a couple of times a week. But we don't drink tea or coffee so have always loved a good hot chocolate, and this is the best.

Between the 3 of us ours gets used daily for lattes/cappuccinos/hot chocolate.

I felt like I was missing out not having a velvetizer but @MadameMackenzie says I'm not Smile

If you are happy then stick with it.

OldWivesTale · 10/12/2022 22:47

Thanks you lot, I've just bloody ordered one now! It'll be my Xmas present to myself!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/12/2022 22:51

The fact people say the hot chocolate is only warm rather than hot puts me off getting one.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/12/2022 23:00

I'd love to do a taste and temp test of hot chocs from the Velvetiser as well as the Lavazza and the Dualit etc and see if there's any difference,

Isabelle70 · 10/12/2022 23:01

Don't forget to sign up for the vip club if you are thinking of buying one down to £69!
We have one and use any chocolate in it, proper one, Cadbury and currently Whitards from the advent calendar.

princesssparklepants · 10/12/2022 23:05

Had mine for a while... got a refurbed one off eBay.

I've only ever used powdered stuff and it works fine. It's great as means you no longer get the big clumps in it!
Love it and bought a friend one!

IhearyouClemFandango · 10/12/2022 23:08

I like being able to shove the ingredients in and turn it on. I wouldn’t bother so much with a pan and a whisk etc.

ErinAndTonic · 10/12/2022 23:34

Reading this thread has tempted me too. I love all things HC... really don't need it but velvety hot chocolate sounds divine!

YourWinter · 10/12/2022 23:45

They’re expensive to buy but I was given mine and I love it. It uses only about 500W so it’s a lot less power than my electric kettle or ceramic hob.

I don’t buy chocolate flakes but I use mine with water and Options instant hot chocolate, with water and milk for instant coffee (I’m definitely not a coffee snob!), and if I have plenty of milk I’ll use it for a mug of cocoa. Tea really needs freshly boiled water but coffee and chocolate drinks don’t.

ErinAndTonic · 10/12/2022 23:47

So if using this with powder eg Whittards fun flavoured ones, would you just heat the milk and pour over or can you put it in the machine?

May ask my boyfriend for this for another xmas prezzie 😀

GreenPeacock · 11/12/2022 00:29

Wow, who knew a Velvetiser was so controversial? We have one, it was a Christmas present for me I think 2 years ago. I love it. I had an Aldi milk heater/critter before that I used for making cappuccinos but I didn’t like it for hot chocolate. DH bought me the Velvetiser and I much prefer it, even if the name does make it sound like a sex toy.

It’s easy to use, I sometimes use the chocolate flakes in it and sometimes just bog standard powder. My kids love a hot chocolate. My eldest can use it herself, she’d find a saucepan or microwave much harder as she’s quite uncoordinated and prone to daydreaming so might forget the pan was on. The heat is perfect for the kids. For me I might whack it on a bit longer. No it doesn’t make a massive mug full, but it’s rich so I don’t want a massive mug. It makes 250ml which I think is fine for a good hot chocolate. And it is so easy to clean. I thought it was a bit of a gimmick buy when I got it, but it turned out to be much more useful than I anticipated.

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 11/12/2022 00:30

A velvetiser is my nightmare gift. I loathe hot chocolate. I bet my mum will buy me one for Christmas. She’s just got one for herself and my grandmother.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/12/2022 00:34

I literally don’t know anybody who owns a velvetiser and am always surprised that they seem so popular on mumsnet. How often do most people drink hot chocolate? I like it but definitely don’t drink it more than a handful of times a year so feel like it would take forever to make it worth spending £70+ on a gadget which can’t be used for anything else.

This reminds me I recently watched a YouTube video which looked at Aldis and he didn't wanna say the product name of the velvetiser so he tries to say similar words and he kept calling it the vulvatiser and it's a pretty family friendly channel so he definitely wasn't doing it on purpose

Ok well it's definitely got a new name in my house now.

ShyMaryEllen · 11/12/2022 01:02

I have one and love it. I use the HC sachets if I have them, second the Pendragons suggestion (their Dark Spice is gorgeous) and I also make turmeric latte in it - milk, a tsp of golden milk mix or turmeric powder, a bit of honey and sometimes some white chocolate chips. I usually stick it in the microwave for 30 seconds afterwards to make it really hot. My only complaint is that it only does one cup at a time, as usually when I am having chocolate it's when a friend is here, and we end up drinking them almost separately by the time the last one is ready.

I wouldn't be without it though.

allthecrooksandnannies · 11/12/2022 01:24

Sorry have to ask - was ‘open down the land’ a typo? I do not mean that cattily! Just wondered if it was one of those situations where you thought that was the saying Grin

I have the Aeroccino for some reason instead - either because it was cheaper than the Velvetiser or came out better in some random internet persons list of the ‘10 best milk frothers’. Could be either!

Does a similar job (the same?) as the Velvetiser and I have have had to force myself not to have daily hot chocolates! I’m not a tea or coffee drinker so could easily go overboard on these.

Put milk in mug.

Microwave 2 mins full power.

Add coffee/chocolate as required.

Absolutely no difference whatsoever in taste.

Less work cleaning, no extra gadgets blocking up cupboards, countertops etc.

The gadget takes up as much space as a large jug and cleaning takes seconds.
It’s more about the frothy texture it creates as it mixes, as well as the taste so it’s not the same as a microwaved mug of milk where you add stuff after.
