Waiting....

OP posts:
Onthegrid · 15/11/2022 09:44

I logged in when I woke a 7am, got through at 8.30 and could have any slot I wanted up to the Thursday which is fine, I would have had Friday if it was available, but any day would have worked.
Nothing was a bother, my ipad just sat on the side counting down whilst I did my morning routine. I use Tesco weekly for my bulk shopping as I find it much easier, and then we have a smaller store plus a M&S Food in our town which I use weekly for my top up. Will do the same at Christmas.

skyeisthelimit · 15/11/2022 09:44

For all the "why" posters. I get a Tesco delivery every Thursday morning. Christmas week is no different. All I want is my usual weekly slot, which I can't get. I have managed to get one for the day before though thankfully.

I don't have time to go grocery shopping. I don't have a partner to go grocery shopping. All I want is my normal weekly shop delivered on my usual day.

HazelBite · 15/11/2022 09:48

I got a slot from ASDA for 23rd December several weeks ago, the opportunity to book came up with my regular slot!

jennymac31 · 15/11/2022 09:50

@Gazelda - couldn't agree more!

loveliesbleeding1 · 15/11/2022 09:52

You all should’ve gone to Sainsbury’s,they had slots weeks ago!!

Downdaysoon · 15/11/2022 09:19

I'm fascinated by this too. Is it due to lack of transport to get to a shop ? I know the British love a queue but this is extreme.

I don't get it at all.

You book your Christmas meat and get your pick up time.

You get all your other stuff well in advance freezing as much as possible, with exception of veg.

Then you go pick up your Christmas meat and either get your veg then (or go early hours).

I have the majority of food for Christmas week bought a week or two in advance to take the stress out of it. Plus it spreads the cost. I am already picking up bits and putting to one side out the way.

Anyone would think the world was ending and wonders about the days before deliveries...

I find fresh is nicer than pre-cooked and frozen. Also, freezer capacity could be a problem.

Pah, amateurs! I got my Xmas shopping slots (2!) about 6 weeks ago.

#smug 🤐🙃

Well not with Tesco when the Christmas Food is available.

Anyone could have ordered baked bean for the 30th Nov & called it their Christmas Shopping. 🙇🏻‍♀️

I have a family of five and I have a kitchen built to store food for a family of five. So, the sudden influx of 13 people makes for a kitchen that is spectacularly squeezed and I'd rather that was a time limited affair.

Not everyone has a freezer, or a lot of spare space, especially if they are hosting.
That's not hard to understand, is it?

Clearly thinking outside their own tiny little smug box it is!!!

MrKlaw · 15/11/2022 10:08

even without Christmas, you need to get your regular weekly shop. If you shop at Tesco and know there will be high demand for slots near the ones you normally get (and plan around) then you'll be queuing up too.

Not just about Christmas.

What a weirdo you are. Why are you saying ‘you do this’ and ‘you do that’ like it’s the only way to do things. 🙄

Some of us order online. Some get it all on one big order. Some get it over a couple of orders. Some get it from one shop, some go to 20 shops. Some people don’t have room to freeze lots of things.

As for booking meat and picking it up. I’m vegan so I don’t do that.

Why the fuck can people not just accept others do it differently instead of whining ‘I don’t get it‘ and ‘I don't understaaaaaaaaand’.

I don't do online food orders (for me it feels easier to get store cupboard stuff around now and do one early morning shop 1-3 days before), but I do sympathcise.

If an online shop suits because you've got lots of guests, maybe do what my SIL does, invite them and then turn around and tell them exactly what they're expected to bring!

How did anyone ever manage in the past?

Nothing smug about it.

I just think it's a reflection of the demanding / over the top nature of Christmas that didn't exist to this degree even 10 years ago.

I don’t want to get up early. I don’t want to drag kids round a busy shop. In fact I don’t even want to go myself. I stand a better chance of getting food if it’s picked by staff from the 4am delivery, rather than hoping there’s some left by the time the pre-orders are filled and I’ve arrived at the shop. There’s also a chance that what I’ve ordered will be out of stock and I’ll get something better as a substitute - a nice expensive treat for the same price as a cheap item. One year I got champagne instead of prosecco!

Because people all go on a thread making a song and dance about how poor the customer service is or how they are martyring themselves by getting up at 6am and having to wait for ages for a slot. And then adding to The Drama of the Christmas Shop that isn't actually a drama it's just that they choose the drama and the subsequent 'look at me, I got my slot' attention seeking.

Meanwhile I just get on with it, and shock horror, manage to get fresh food too.

Ooohhhh thhheree drammmmmaaaa!

Erm. Nope. Just nope.

I just see it for what it is.

It's just a straight up matter of logistics. If you want to have a good old whinge about the excesses of Christmas there's always the AIBU board?

Gazelda · 15/11/2022 10:48

But @RedToothBrush you're not taking into account that many people who've been queuing this morning are regular online shoppers who are keen to make sure they get their usual weekly slot for milk, bread, tinned tomatoes, cabbage, bleach, gin etc etc

Personally speaking, it means I'm able to cope with the stress of a madly busy December work-period safe in the knowledge I don't have to worry about finding time to go to a supermarket.

We're all different. We all have peaks and troughs. Respect others' needs and priorities.

No drama here. I used the site, in and out not long after 6am. Others were just venting frustrations at the app or chatting about what number in the queue they were. No harm to you at all

Avoid the thread if it’s not for you rather than give instructions on how people should all shop your way.

It would be like me going on a thread about something I didn’t do and then telling all the people how I do something completely different.

Weirdo

You’re on the Christmas topic.

Bore off. I’m sure you’ll find some people to complain with about people going over the top at Christmas in another topic area. You can all have a non OTT Christmas together. 🙄

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/11/2022 10:57

These threads are actually helpful to those of us who are trying to order. Last year I learned how & when to grab a slot; I came back to the thread triumphantly, read some more posts & realised I could've booked a New Year slot too, so I logged back in & found I still could! I'd missed that completely when I was on the website.

This year so many people seem to have been confused by the Delivery Saver thing, & it's obviously helpful to them to know why they can't access the Christmas slots yet.

And the camaraderie & mild competitiveness among those in the queue is just more fun than getting up at OMG-it's-early & sitting there alone with a computer or a phone.

And yes, I also have a Sainsburys slot booked, for things I like which only they do. (Sits back & waits to be told I'm greedy, there aren't enough slots for some people to have two, what about XYZ group of people.)

Killjoys can stay away.

Bluekerfuffle · 15/11/2022 11:01

I got a sainsbury’s slot for 23rd a few weeks ago, but I guarantee they will be out of stock of most Christmas foods on the day.
