If you do stockings and have a partner...

Do they do you a stocking?

It's just occurred to me that I do my own stocking! I have never even questioned it before, did the same in my past relationship and the women in my family did/do their own as well. I was looking at some really thoughtful, small stocking fillers for DP and realised that he doesn't do one for me- he's never done them for anyone and thinks of them as more decorative, whereas I always had a filled one so it falls on me to fill them. Does your DP fill your one, or do you do your own? If it makes any difference, our stockings are mainly filled with edibles, a pair of socks and a few small gifts (all under £10 each- a card game, a key ring, bookmark etc). They don't have big or more expensive gifts in.

Yes we do them for each other.

cempasuchil · 14/11/2022 20:22

I grew up with stockings and dh didn't do it took him a while to get used to it and to get it right, but he got there in the end!

gamerchick · 14/11/2022 20:22

I've never had one and don't do them. They boggle my head a bit. Like whats the point? You get stuff like that in crackers.

If it's what you've always known then I can see how you're used to it. But definitely don't understand them adults. What purpose do they serve other than just costing more coin?

Might be something to set your bloke though if it's important to you. Won't do him any harm to make you happy and put some thoughts in.

Stockings for children only in our house, but I’d be pretty upset if I was having to do my own and would just stop for adults then.

AndEverWhoKnew · 14/11/2022 20:23

I pop basic stuff in mine eg tangerine, chocolate. DH then sneaks little wrapped gifts in once I'm asleep.

LT2 · 14/11/2022 20:24

He does do me one. But he doesn't enjoy it. He always struggles to know what you get so I make him an ideas list (what sort of things I'd like or need).

hellosunshineagainxxx · 14/11/2022 20:38

Yes we do them for eachother and the kids

CaronPoivre · 14/11/2022 20:45

He does all the main presents apart from his own.
I do all stockings apart from my own. He usually does that. We take them with us if we’re waking up somewhere apart from at home. Spouses get stockings now too.
Sometimes he’ll see something that he thinks would be good for one of the stockings and buys it.
I sometimes see something I think might fit very well in my stocking and buy it. Then I make sure it’s put somewhere he can find it and he can then hide it away so I am surprised on the day.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/11/2022 20:49

DH does mine. We first started doing it when we had no spare cash instead of presents (£10 limit). Now its a bit of fun and DDs help too.

ChicCroissant · 14/11/2022 20:51

I do the stockings including my own - I've already bought a few small bits to go into it. Same as the OP, it's not the main gift but smaller items.

legalseagull · 14/11/2022 21:00

Why would an adult do a stocking for themselves. I don't get it? Stockings are meant to be from Father Christmas and full of surprises. It's like an adult pretending to give themselves something from Santa. If your partner did it, fair enough, that's sweet. But why on earth would you do your own? For decoration?

But you're not surprised on that day. You bought it. It's not a gift.

swirlypinky · 14/11/2022 21:03

No, they're for kids. they think Father Christmas left it

Get a grip people

Consumerism madness

DappledThings · 14/11/2022 21:04

Stockings only for children. When I had my first Christmas with PIL everyone got stockings. It was really weird to me.

DelurkingAJ · 14/11/2022 21:04

Yes, DH does (as DDad did for DMum). I get all the nice little treats that I wouldn’t buy myself because it seems too indulgent. I buy DH a combination of treats and useful stuff (often for the kitchen). My favourite bit of Xmas!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 14/11/2022 21:04

DH does mine and I do his. I think it’s really sad you have to do your own when you have a partner

swirlypinky · 14/11/2022 21:05

If DH or PIL or parents did a stocking for me, it would be full of tat i dont want

Letthesunshineonin · 14/11/2022 21:08

I wouldn’t dream of doing a stocking for myself. What’s the point, there’s no surprises!
I wouldn’t be doing one for my partner either if he couldn’t be bothered to do one for me
Stockings are for our kids only anyway.

WordtoYoMumma · 14/11/2022 21:10

DH does one for me but he isn't at all good at present buying 😂

glamourousindierockandroll · 14/11/2022 21:12

Yes - it's a new concept for my husband but he does do me a stocking. We only really started it last year when our daughter was born.

Byelaws · 14/11/2022 21:14

DH does mine and I do his. We love stockings.

I do add quite a few things but that’s mainly so I don’t feel guilty about buying stuff I want.

FallHappy1 · 14/11/2022 21:18

Me and my partner do one for each other.

minipie · 14/11/2022 21:23

Didn’t spot this was in Christmas section and was expecting a very different thread!

Yousee · 14/11/2022 21:27

DH does my stocking, it's just an easy way of wrapping presents IMO. We don't tend to get each other anything particularly bulky as a "main present", just small luxuries of the consumable variety.
My stocking always contains a box of After Eights (the taste of Christmas) White Company Winter candle (the scent of Christmas) a bottle of Tia Maria (not so much the spirit as the liqueur of Christmas 😁) and other bits such as cashmere socks, nice lip balm, usually vouchers for a spa or tickets for a show.
Definitely no tat or anything likely to be found in a cracker.

mast0650 · 14/11/2022 21:29

No stockings are only done by parents for children. Including young adult children until they've properly left home and/or got kids of their own. I can't imagine filling my own stocking???!!!?
