With the food prices shooting up I'm thinking to start putting the occasional treat on my weekly shop now and hide Grin

What's everyone started buying with good dates on?

I have chocolate, 12 boxes of different crackers, tortillas, pretzels, Betty's mince pies in the freezer and

a cupboard full of booze. In fairness we always have a full alcohol cupboard, so have just bought 3 more Baileys.
3 of us, not hosting.

KnittingAuntie · 23/11/2022 08:52

Have got Lindt chocolates, Finlandia jellies and Benedick's mint assortment (these are non-negotiable for my family!)

Have got a tin of biscuits for cheese and a tin of M&S Belgian biscuits

Several bottles of shloer and similar drinks

Jars of chutney and one of M&S marmalade

Off to Waitrose tomorrow to get a panettone and coffee shortbread

Then just the fresh stuff nearer the time - the rest of the family usually bring crisps, savouries, buffet food and Quality Street or Roses

Coffee shortbread sound nice! I have no biscuits yet

I’ve been adding an extra thing to the shopping for a while now and so far have - celebrations/roses tubs from their September offer, picallulky, cranberry sauce, Frazzles, have made pigs in blankets and red cabbage for freezer. Still need to get vienetta and ice cream but currently no room left in freezer!! I think I’ve got a couple of mince pie packs too although I prefer the ones I make so the bought ones are for my husband and any picky visitors.

xogossipgirlxo · 23/11/2022 09:28

I bought some frozen bits and pieces, like mozzarella sticks (but it's more for NYE than Christmas) Not sure about butter prices, not that long ago it was £2.15, now it's back to £1.99 again, so I bought 3 blocks and froze two just in case. Also, we bought alcohol when it was on offer: Irish Cream and Jack Daniels Honey. I think I am going to buy cheddar and red leicester blocks, some crackers etc., they have long BBE dates. I might buy and freeze some ham too.

Summersdreaming · 23/11/2022 09:40

MIL gave us a spare fridge freezer a few weeks ago which has become dangerously known as the Christmas fridge 😂we are buying bits each week. Going to get pigs in blankets to freeze and all the nice frozen stuff that I don't usually have space for so I don't have to cook as much while I'm off.

I've already got a bottle of Baileys, but Sainsbury have 1 L bottles reduced from £22 to £10, so I've stuck another one on this week's on-line order.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 23/11/2022 15:15

I bought a 'chocolate biscuit collection' and a box off 22 packets of crisps from Morrisons today 😋 I bought some treeslets when there was a thread about them on here too as I've never had/heard of them and was curious 🤷‍♀️🤣

FoxInABox · 23/11/2022 15:30

So far I’ve got :
cranberry sauce
mint sauce
goosefat
bucks fizz
biscuits
baileys (which I have also tested to be safe)
those cheese Christmas tree things treeselets after reading a thread on here 😃

Going to add heroes & celebrations to this weeks shop, pulling crackers and crackers for cheese too.

FoxInABox · 23/11/2022 15:30

@NoNamesLeft234678 snap on the treeselets things!

Stickmansmum · 23/11/2022 16:25

I bought M&S frozen bake yourself chocolate twists. They are almost impossible to get once you reach December. The checkout lady told me 3 weeks ago ‘you’re wise to get these now’ and I haven’t been able to find them since in any M&S.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 23/11/2022 16:55

I've got stuffing, pigs in blankets & puff pastry being delivered tonight which will go straight in the freezer.

Wine, Prosecco and champagne already down in the cellar and table linens and crackers bought. It's our first Christmas hosting so want to make everything perfect, but having been buying week by week so it doesn't bankrupt us!

Vinylloving · 23/11/2022 17:00

Stuff like chocolate coins, chocolate orange, matchmakers, booze like bucks fizz and baileys. Planning a lidl trip for booze. Don't have a big freezer so can't fill it unfortunately

Favouritefruits · 23/11/2022 17:29

Chocolate tub
pretzels
mice pice (had a good date)
pop

if there’s nothing I can find for Christmas I just buy something like toilet roll to put away to save me buying it at Christmas.

Always4Brenner · 23/11/2022 18:10

Pigs in blankets split into three lots two for January as a treat. Buffets bits in freezer my four giant prawns salmon mouse starters and smoked salmon brought weeks ago in freezer too. Mince pies I’ll freeze as puff pasty ones can’t get them at my local Tesco express. Turkey slices to be frozen as well. Veg in freezer already. There’s only me and I’m very happy with my little haul chocolates too.

mac1974 · 23/11/2022 18:19

Has anyone started to eat their purchases? I've unfortunately done a giant toblerone and am on my way to completing a tub of very merry munch 😬

ThreeRingCircus · 23/11/2022 18:25

I also start buying around October time adding just one or two things to the weekly shop to spread the cost. I feel happier knowing I have things stashed away so I won't have to dash round the shops for everything in the days before Christmas.

So far I've got:

Two bottles of Cremant for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Scallops in the freezer (we always have shellfish for Christmas Eve dinner)

Beef dripping for the roast potatoes

Stuffing balls in the freezer

Pigs in blankets in the freezer

Cranberry sauce

Turkey gravy granules

Christmas pudding and brandy butter

Crackers

A couple of wedges of cheese but I need more for the cheeseboard

Wine and prosecco

Bottle of Baileys

Foil trays to make washing up easier on Christmas Day

Chutney

Nuts

Crisps

Lebkuchen

Still to get are mince pies, the meat and all the fresh veg for Christmas dinner, Yorkshire puddings, beers, bagels, smoked salmon, cream cheese, chocolates etc. I'll keep adding a couple of items each week as I like just slowly building the stash up!

HauntersGonnaHaunt · 23/11/2022 18:29

I bought a non-alcoholic mulled wine because there was 20% off so why not? I might get some glitterberry J20 at the weekend. It's on offer right now with clubcard.
We've got a turkey and a dessert ordered.
I also bought Snowman toilet paper and kitchen roll.Blush

I can't think of anything else to buy in advance.

Please return to this thread and let us know when it appears. I don't tend to shop at sainsburys as the other supermarkets are all closer but sounds worth a detour!

Sainsburys don't seem to be doing it this year, they have a blood orange one (Iirc) instead. I got a clementine curd one in Ocado. Costa fiver though1 Xmas Shock

Always4Brenner · 23/11/2022 19:15

Can you freeze cheese then?

I8toys · 23/11/2022 19:20

Schloer
Baileys
Danish pastries for the freezer - including M&S pastries
Obligatory tins of celebrations and Heroes
Nut trays from Tesco (love chocolate coated nuts)
Florentines
Baileys Leibniz
All the crinkle cut crips from Tesco
Coop salt and vinegar chardonnay are the dogs bits
Shortbread
Going to add crackers (for cheese) and all types of nuts including cashews

Marmite27 · 23/11/2022 19:24

We have two bags of Grinch chocolate coins, two tins of Merry Munch, and two pouches of the similar mix and a yard of Jaffa cakes. DD1 (7) got two pouches of hero’s for her birthday which she magnanimously said could go in the Christmas cupboard which I thought was nice of her. You can bet she’ll be nicking my Lindt lindor come the day and leaving me with the hero’s though!

I have some pigs in blankets in the freezer from a Christmas past (I’m not saying which one or the MN best before date police will be after me). We also have a big box of crackers (the for cheese type) in already, and stuffing is our usual as no one likes the fancy stuff.

I need after eights, part baked rolls, pickled onions and branston pickle this week to ensure we’re on course.

Fairislefandango · 23/11/2022 19:27

Nothing. I've never done that tbh. If there's one thing I've learned about Christmas food from MN, it's that people who buy it early to put away do not save money - they eat it and have to buy more Grin

SquigglePigs · 23/11/2022 19:47

We've had a nice beef joint from a butcher in the freezer for a month already. I got some of my favourite pigs in blankets from Waitrose this week just in case they feel me in my Christmas delivery. That's as far as I've got.....
