With the food prices shooting up I'm thinking to start putting the occasional treat on my weekly shop now and hide Grin

What's everyone started buying with good dates on?

OP posts:

LBFseBrom · 12/09/2022 12:12

Nothing. I buy what I want when I want it. No shortages here yet.

Surely it's about spreading the cost, not shortages?

I'm buying nuts, crisps, Pringles, crackers etc (though some dates aren't long enough yet). I also bought Shloer yesterday as it was on offer.

Where has £1 chocolate oranges?

Billybagpuss · 13/09/2022 06:27

I will get some puff pastry for the freezer, you can never get it close to the day and it takes so long to make a classic puff.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 13/09/2022 06:33

Good idea OP, I haven't, but now I'm thinking I should.

2anddonefornow · 13/09/2022 06:54

@NoWordForFluffy Tesco, have been £1 all year but it won’t surprise me if they put them up to discount at some point.

gogohmm · 13/09/2022 07:09

No point, we'll eat them

NoWordForFluffy · 13/09/2022 07:23

Thanks, @2anddonefornow. I don't often go into Tesco, so will look. Xmas Grin

We get the vast majority of stuff in the months leading up to Christmas. It saves me having to lug stuff home on the bus if DH is working and we can get some bargains and spread the cost. Two or three extra bits with each shop is hardly noticeable. And it’s so much nicer wandering around Sainsbury’s just getting fresh stuff, not being in a rush or with a giant list, or worrying that someone will be disappointed because their favourite chocolate has sold out. Also, there are quite a few things we like from different shops, so getting them now means an extra 30 seconds while I’m in there, rather than a day spent traipsing around trying to find a particular brand of Lebkuchen.

Top of my list at the moment is pastry for sausage rolls, chipolatas & streaky bacon from the butchers to make the most delicious pigs in blankets ever and the bits for home made stuffing, as well as vegan nibbley bits for the freezer and vegan chocolate for our guests. We’re not big drinkers but we do go through quite a lot of fizzy and cordials. Farm Foods, Iceland etc have some good offers on slabs of drinks at the moment, so that spreads the cost.

The only non fresh stuff we don’t get in advance is fruitcake and Pringles, simply because neither of us have any self control and would eat them.

beachcitygirl · 13/09/2022 11:22

I cant be trusted with nice things. I'll eat them

NoDairyNoProblem · 13/09/2022 12:01

We have teenagers/young adults at home. It’s been like the scene from Derry girls around here on more than one occasion!

I start this week (15 shops till Christmas) and tend to get about £10 worth a week. That includes selection boxes for others too.

sueelleker · 13/09/2022 12:06

I've ordered and paid for my Christmas meat from Donald Russell-it's being delivered at the end of November. And I bought a bottle of limited edition Baileys Tiramisu flavour on special offer a few weeks ago.

GettingStuffed · 13/09/2022 21:31

Some caramel coated nuts from Lidl.

Fiddledeedeeee · 13/09/2022 22:23

Chocolate oranges (eaten already) and 2 for £7 tubs of chocolates from Tesco (eaten most of one already).
I think I’ll just stick to boring things like stuffing mix and cranberry sauce for a while…

So far:
Christmas Pudding that is entering its 3rd festive period in the pantry , I really need to get it eaten this year ( we had 3 of us with Covid last Christmas )

Pack of cooked chestnuts which are delicious with sprouts

Ginger beer (Fentimans) Pepsi cans and J2O all safely in the garage

Sultanas and Amarretto , I'll buy the cherries next week and it'll be ready to soak

I've got a list of things to buy when I see them (biscuits, clementide curd , Panatonne)

Box of After Eights was opened by DS but they weren't on the Christmas Paws Off Shelf.
I'm not eating chocolate but I'm going to treat myself to something nice and festive like the liquorice chocolates .(Lakrid)

Where do you get clementine curd? Sounds delicious

anibendod · 14/09/2022 19:39

@mac1974 you've made my day! I discovered merry munch last year, it's awesome!!!

It's a Sainsbury Taste the Difference one . They do Lemon Curd all year but the Clementine was a limited edition .
And yes , it is delicious Xmas Grin

Nothing because I would eat it all.

PMSL 😂😂

Malleus123 · 15/09/2022 15:06

Got 2 tins of very merry munch today to put away

Goldenphoenix · 15/09/2022 15:13

Have bought posh pigs in blankets and posh stuffing for the freezer. They tend to get more expensive or be out of stock nearer Christmas time. It's not proper Christmas without pigs in blankets!

Nobody has answered my question yet! What is it?

jesusjoan · 15/09/2022 15:44

@Fiddledeedeeee Your post made me laugh as this is exactly why we don't stock up too far in advance. Self control = nil.

FrownedUpon · 15/09/2022 16:02

Nothing. It would definitely get eaten. I don’t really see the point anyway. We don’t buy masses of food for Christmas.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 15/09/2022 16:16

@Cuwins from an M&S post last year. Seems its a tin of snacks

"It’s packed with all our festive favourites including milk and white chocolate popcorn, dark chocolate pretzels, caramel almonds and much more!!!!"

mac1974 · 15/09/2022 16:29

@Malleus123 I'm totally jealous. They had none in our M&S this week. Think I might need to head to the large out of town food hall.
