Does anybody actually like Christmas music in shops?

There are certain songs I like, but every time I hear Christmas songs in shops I feel stressed and pissed off.

My opinion is that people can choose to wear earphones with Christmas music on whilst they shop, play songs in the car or at home, but it should be banned in shops.

I quite like Christmas btw

I love it. I especially like it when people are all humming and singing along to it under their breath and trying to fight the reflex to bop along with it.

I think it would drive me mad if I worked in a shop at Christmas time though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/11/2021 20:39

I love it and if I'm shopping on a Friday then a wander round the supermarket to some Christmas music makes me linger .

Ones I dislike though:
Ronan Keetings FToNY ( awful)
Band Aid Do They Know it's Christmas
Wizzard I Wisj It Could Be Christmas Every Day
CBA looking up the name I Want A Hippopotatmus For Christmas

Love Love Love The Pogues and Kirsty McColl Fairytale of New York but it either doesn't get airplay or its the "sanitised" version.

Top Marks for dreadful went to Little Jimmy Osmond and his version of Little Drummer Boy .Not only is that a song that's hard to listen to after the link it has with Brady/Hindley , but he just crucified it Sad

RestingStitchFace · 20/11/2021 21:36

Once we hit December, I love it. But not before.

daisyjgrey · 20/11/2021 22:03

No!

I did work in retail though and I think that's made me jaded. Listening to Wham 17 times a day from mid November should be covered by the Geneva convention tbh.

LubaLuca · 20/11/2021 22:05

I like it. I went in a little gift shop last week that was playing gentle Christmas music and had scented the air with something Christmassy, and I thought it was lovely.

@Accidentgirlfriend

I work in retail and can’t wait for our Xmas music to start ! Our company hasn’t got a license to play the radio or known artists apparently and so we have to put up with a cd of some unknown music going round on loop every day and I’ve heard the songs so much now I assume they are in the charts 😂 I hope we get the really good Christmas cd similar to the one we had last year it makes work go so much quicker when you’re bopping along to cheery Xmas tunes :) I think it gives helps with my Christmas spirit .
Oooh do you work in Costa or Poundland by any chance? I always love the unknown Xmas music they play, it makes me feel extra festive for some reason!
daisyjgrey · 20/11/2021 22:41

@Lampzade

Absolutely loathe it. When I was a teenager I had a Saturday job at a clothes shop. From mid. November they would play the same Christmas tape. Even now , I get an irrational rage when I hear Slade’s Merry Christmas everybody

God yes. I am HAUNTED by that dickhead shouting "iiiiiitssss chrrrrrriiissssssstmaaaaaasssssss".

BeaucoupFish · 20/11/2021 22:45

@Moonface123
Home Bargains plays some good music actually🎷

Classical christmas music and carols are fine. Slade: fuck off Mariah Carey: fuck off Cliff Richard: fuck off I am driven mad every single year by awful 70's xmas music if you can call it that to the point I don't go out to shop anymore, I buy everything all online which surely defeats the point.
Yep. I totally agree with this. Some of the I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus type stuff too loud and /or too early will make me leave the shop. A few years ago I was in Boots, trying to choose stuff, and couldn't think bc the place was hot, stuffy and crowded and the music made it feel so claustrophobic so I asked about ten random people what they thought about the music - half said they hated it and half said they hadn't noticed it. But there seem to be people here who like it so maybe context - not too early/loud/tedious old stuff. It ruins the shopping for me. I love the carols from Kings though but by that time I can't bear to hear the other stuff on the radio at home, which is a shame.
hugoagogo · 20/11/2021 23:21

I thought someone was singing badly to themselves in M&S recently, only to twig it was some crap Michael Buble Christmas song. Christmas songs are only played here on Christmas morning.
If I am shopping for any length of time, Placebo helps.

hugoagogo · 20/11/2021 23:22

Brass bands are the absolute worst!

LolaSmiles · 20/11/2021 23:24

I like Christmas songs in shops, but dislike it when a couple of naff Christmas songs are on in every shop. Looking at you Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me. Angry

crankysaurus · 20/11/2021 23:30

Can't stand it and wear headphones with something loud while I'm going round the shops.

Coronado2 · 20/11/2021 23:42

I love it

snugglyblanket · 20/11/2021 23:50

I enjoy it from November but I tend to shop early. If I'm Christmas shopping in-store then I'm likely to be going in November. I try to avoid busy shops from mid-December.

bananaboats · 20/11/2021 23:52

I like it but I'm rarely in shops these days so not really exposed to it much

Kitkat151 · 20/11/2021 23:58

I like it

I actually came here to post that I love christmas music in shops ONLY IF it's the originals. Those crappy covers are my worst nightmare. The first time I heard them I left hobbycraft after 5 mins because the music was so terrible! I now no longer shop in places that can't be bothered to spend a few £££ buying a licence to play the proper music Grin It makes me physically uncomfortable (which I know is OTT but thats how I feel about it).

Thank god I can do everything online now!

CeeJay81 · 21/11/2021 11:37

I enjoy it mostly. Every 5 or 6th song is an Xmas one atm in the supermarket I work in. Then come December it's every other song. I enjoy it but by the Christmas week run up I am starting to get sick of the same songs! Singing them in my sleep lol

Franticbutterfly · 21/11/2021 12:02

Love it! 🌲🎄🌲🎄

Eenymeanyminey · 21/11/2021 12:03

I love it. Gets me excited an din the mood to spend 😂

Grin funny isn't it - I absolutely love brass bands, especially oompah-oompahing their way through jolly Christmas tunes! we're going out this afternoon for a brass band concert at a Christmas lights' switching on.

(My DD's playing in it, but that's not why I love brass bands - more the other way round - we were at a Christmas brass concert a few years back and they said they needed more players and she joined - it's a brilliant hobby.)

startingfromscratch · 21/11/2021 12:06

It depends on the shop. I like the Christmas music they play in M&S for example but my local supermarket seem to only play the rubbish Christmas songs that never even made the top 10 in the charts..

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/11/2021 12:08

In December, yes. Straight after Halloween, not so much.

Sniv · 21/11/2021 12:33

My problem is that my actual favourite Christmas songs are the naff 80s ones. I really like to put them on late December as a soundtrack for doing Christmassy things like wrapping presents, putting decs up, baking, etc so they can fill me with memories of dancing like a wild thing at the Infant school disco and visiting Santa's grotto many years ago. I don't want them to remind me of queueing to buy toilet cleaner and complete 100 other menial shopping tasks over and over again in the last 8 weeks.

I'd much rather the shops played instrumental/choral Christmas music, because it's so much easier to tune out and I'm never going to put it on at home.
