What non-cringey Christmas movies can you recommend?

Many people on MN talk about watching their favourite Christmas movies on Christmas Eve or on the day.
I've never really got into this but I'd love to hear your recommendations.
A couple of years ago we watched Die Hard which was fun. When I was much younger I'd watch Breakfast at Tiffany's every year or so. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban seems to get a run every couple of years. Vicar of Dibley Christmas episode is wonderful too though not a film obviously.
But any non-sick making Christmas themed things to watch?

The Christmas episode of The Good Life (Silly, But It’s Fun)
Merry Christmas Mr Bean
Arthur Christmas
The Jim Carey version of A Christmas Carol

Do you mean non-cringe as in not saccharine sweet? If so, our favourites are:
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Nativity
Scrooged
Christmas Chronicles
I also have to watch both Gavin and Stacey Christmas specials every year

I'm not a Christmas film type but last year we watched Krampus... it is a cheesy horror but I didn't hate it, had its funny moments.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 13/11/2021 10:04

I second Krampus.

Even better, Rare Exports: a Christmas Tale (Finnish film).

For old school classics, The Bishop’s Wife is lovely. And also It’s a Wonderful Life.

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 13/11/2021 10:20

Our Christmas must watches are Die Hard and Die Hard 2.

The Bishop's Wife looks good

Forgot to mention the original Miracle on 34th street with tiny Natalie Wood which I haven't seen in years but loved. Some of those old films were so good weren't they?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/11/2021 13:14

Home Alone is the best Christmas film.

Hairwizard · 13/11/2021 13:19

Forgot about home alone! Kids love it !

TractorAndHeadphones · 13/11/2021 13:33

There;s only ONE Christmas movie/series OP and you know it.
Die Hard ;)

TractorAndHeadphones · 13/11/2021 13:33

Sorry just realised you've watched it!
All of them?

manybirdsnests · 13/11/2021 13:39

It's not a movie, but the BBC one-off comedy Click and Collect with Stephen Merchant and Asim Choudhry is a really funny watch with that feel-good Christmas vibe. I hope they repeat it again this year!

Therealjudgejudy · 13/11/2021 13:43

Home alone for films.

The Royle Family The new sofa is my favourite Christmas TV special. Also Gavin and Stacey

Sn0tnose · 13/11/2021 13:44

The Bishop's Wife looks good It’s bloody lovely.

We love all of the Christmas Carols (Alastair Sim’s version for DH, the Muppets for me), It’s a Wonderful Life, Santa Claus the Movie, the Holiday, Love Actually and Home Alone.

Also, I watched Last Christmas with Emilia Clark in recently (lots of George Michael songs). I knew the ending before I watched it so wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did, but it was absolutely wonderful.

cannotfindanickname · 13/11/2021 13:47

I like 'Deck the Halls'. and also 'The Nightmare before Christmas'. ( which works either for Christmas or Halloween).

iklboo · 13/11/2021 13:47

Second Arthur Christmas. It's our Xmas Eve film.

LaBellina · 13/11/2021 13:49

The Nightmare before Christmas. Love this movie since I was a child (had some of my Halloween decorations of this year with this as a theme).
Also the Sissi movies with Romy Schneider. Not Christmas movies per se but very festive and beautiful to watch during Christmas.

RobertsRadio · 13/11/2021 13:50

When Harry Met Sally
Falling in Love
Polar Express
The Snowman
The Woman in Black (probably just me)
Dr Zhivago - all that snow makes me think Christmas

Pumpkinstace · 13/11/2021 13:50

'Father Christmas'

The 1991 animated short film

waltzingparrot · 13/11/2021 13:51

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey

There's also that one with the reindeer that a boy keeps in their shed without his parents knowing. Never know the title of it, but somehow seem to find my way to it every christmas.
