What non-cringey Christmas movies can you recommend?

Many people on MN talk about watching their favourite Christmas movies on Christmas Eve or on the day.
I've never really got into this but I'd love to hear your recommendations.
A couple of years ago we watched Die Hard which was fun. When I was much younger I'd watch Breakfast at Tiffany's every year or so. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban seems to get a run every couple of years. Vicar of Dibley Christmas episode is wonderful too though not a film obviously.
But any non-sick making Christmas themed things to watch?

The first 1930s Thin Man film is set at Christmas (bonus cute dog and slightly risque humour since it's from the Pre-Code era)

I love Prancer about a little girl who hides an injured reindeer on her family barn although lots of other parts to it. Lots of real snow, very touching and not schmaltzy at all. Second It's a Wonderful life!

Smerch · 16/11/2021 13:32

It's not a Christmas film but I like to watch About Time at this time of year, never fails to make me cry and has similar vibes to It's A Wonderful Life.

I like comedy Christmas specials - lots already mentioned but Peep Show has a good Christmas episode, and I’ve just discovered Ghosts, which has one Christmas episode on iPlayer and they’re doing another one this year apparently. Miranda’s one is quite cheesy but I enjoyed it.

Inside No 9’s one is quite brutal, but fab!

We just watched Krampus - wow. What an abysmal film. Not even scary, just BAD! Lol

Wishihadanalgorithm · 19/11/2021 19:11

If you like Die Hard then I suggest The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Christmas in the Clouds makes me smile too and right now I’m watching Jingle All the Way. However, I do love ALL Christmas films.

Fred Claus or Four Christmases?

Where Eagles Dare! Terrifically exciting and beautiful snow - nothing to do with Christmas of course but a real winter favourite. Richard Burton is brilliant in it

I love old movies, so few of those:

  1. Christmas in Connecticut with wonderful Barbara Stanwyck - that is my to go film for wrapping presents
  1. I’ll Be Seeing You - with Ginger Rogers and Joseph Conrad, that one is a little bit sad, but I love it all the same
  1. All That Heaven Allows with Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson - not actually christmas movie, but lot of scenes happening during festive period and scenography is just stunning
Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 20/11/2021 07:41

About a Boy - finishes up with a Christmas scene, so I reckon it counts. Not really a tradition, but we randomly watched it last Christmas, and have earmarked it for this December.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 20/11/2021 07:42

And Nativity 1 and 2, obviously.

We just pretend 3 and 4 don’t exist.
