Many people on MN talk about watching their favourite Christmas movies on Christmas Eve or on the day.
I've never really got into this but I'd love to hear your recommendations.
A couple of years ago we watched Die Hard which was fun. When I was much younger I'd watch Breakfast at Tiffany's every year or so. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban seems to get a run every couple of years. Vicar of Dibley Christmas episode is wonderful too though not a film obviously.
But any non-sick making Christmas themed things to watch?

@Thewolvesarerunningagain

Every year we have to watch : Die Hard (DH and me only) muppets Christmas carol (not negotiable) Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger Jingle all the way The Grinch (cartoon version) Arthur Christmas Home alone Elf and as my username would suggest the BBC adaptation of the box of delights with Patrick Troughton. Oh yes! Every. Single. Year.

😀

Box of Delights - yes!! How this thrilled and terrified me as a youngster

Thanks so much for all these great suggestions!
For a start I'll watch It's a wonderful life - I've never seen it and have heard so much about it!

@TractorAndHeadphones

There;s only ONE Christmas movie/series OP and you know it. Die Hard ;)
Yep. Every year without fail. Big kids return for Die Hard night.

I think cheese is part of the charm with Christmas movies tbh! Non negotiables here are Scrooged and Muppets Christmas Carol.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 15/11/2021 00:34

lipsandlashes- it is truly scary, and brilliant! The special effects are dated as all heck but the scenes with Abner Brown are fab. They have made an Audio book version with Mark Gatiss which DH has promised to get me for Xmas :-)

clartins · 15/11/2021 07:33

Another vote for Krampus. It’s one of those so bad it’s good films.

Flakjacketon · 15/11/2021 08:26

Peter Pan Goes Wrong

@SmallWaistFatFace

Klaus came out on Netflix last year. It's animated and bloody brilliant. I couldn't believe how good it was.
Yes - we watched Klaus last year and it was just wonderful.
Hereslookinatyoukid · 15/11/2021 08:44

Casablanca. Obviously. 😁

NCnotmyusualone · 15/11/2021 08:51

Christmas chronicles
Have to watch it’s a wonderful life
A couple of versions of a Christmas carol (the Patrick Stewart one is my favourite)
The animated snow dog (usually watched after The snowman)
Elf
Nativity
Last year we added Klaus to the list, really great movie on Netflix.

Whatwillbewilbe · 15/11/2021 08:55

A couple of good, definitely not saccharin sweet, Netflix Christmas films are "Last Christmas" and "Father Christmas is Back" (John Cleese, Liz Hurley, Caroline Quentin, Kelsey Grammer...).

@HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule

I second Krampus.

Even better, Rare Exports: a Christmas Tale (Finnish film).

For old school classics, The Bishop’s Wife is lovely. And also It’s a Wonderful Life.

Ha ha!! I read the film title as “The Bishop’s Wife is Lovely”!!! Don’t know what is wrong with me today’

Maulstick · 15/11/2021 09:35

Arthur Christmas is funny, touching and brilliantly well-written and acted -- Bill Nighy's 'Steptoe Does Santa' version of GrandSanta is brilliant, and Hugh Laurie as Steve Santa, a sort of combination of David Brent, Paul Hollywood and Prince Charles (because he can only become Santa when his father dies or retires) with a silver beard trimmed into a Christmas tree, is awesome.

HelloKittySkittles · 15/11/2021 12:30

I’ve just watched the trailer for Krampus -WTH?!
I imagined you all watching family friendly films with kids, it looks terrifying Shock

SirChenjins · 15/11/2021 12:45

Oh my word - I just watched that trailer for Krampus too Shock. I mean, there's non-sick making and there's terrifying.

StarryNightSparkles · 15/11/2021 13:03

Mrs Miniver not really a Christmas film but I love watching it at Christmas.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 15/11/2021 13:39

Krampus and Rare Exports are not children’s films (not young children, anyway).

TatianaBis · 15/11/2021 13:49

The Bishop's Wife

A Cary Grant film I haven't seen! That's going on my list.
