For me it's:

Christmas eve box
Advebt calendars
December 1st box
Breakfast with Santa
Crackers
Pantomime (love musical theatre though)
Bread sauce
Christmas pudding and cake. Love a yule log!

Flashing Xmas lights all day from
Neighbours. I’m sure they look lovely walking past at night but not for 12h day by curtains are open thanks.

shinynewapple21 · 06/11/2021 18:11

Never did Elf on the shelf or Christmas Eve boxes with DS - I think they started once he was too old. I used to love all the other run up to Christmas stuff . In December !
Don't like seeing everyone's decorations up middle of November especially the OTT lights.
We're going out for our Christmas dinner this year and not sure what I feel about that really.

lazylinguist · 06/11/2021 18:11

I missed out a few...

Trashy Christmas television
Baileys (sickly)
Slobby Christmas- I like dressing smartly for special days, not hanging about in pyjamas or lounge wear
Being just the 4 of us at home for Christmas (we are normally away at family's houses or hosting them for several days - being just us is boring and a massive anti-climax).

BeeDavis · 06/11/2021 18:14

This year I’ll be fussed for EVERYTHING as I’ll have a 3 month old on Christmas Day 💙 I’ve just had an hour long phone call with my mum discussing our colour theme for this year’s Christmas dinner table! Me and my fiancé do alternate years with our family and it’s my family’s year this year so I always do a nice table setting with my mum! Looking forward to it so much! I understand a lot of Xmas stuff is cringey but the way I see it is just making memories and having a great time with loved ones 🥰

InFiveMins · 06/11/2021 18:23

I could do without presents. Quite happy to just spend the day with loved ones and lots of nice food and drink.

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 06/11/2021 18:28

Not fussed about the predictable posters eagerly diving onto threads to pretend they're oh so superior for never having heard of a Christmas Eve box. Allegedly.

They were a "thing" in the 70s, even if your parents were the type to join the race to the bottom (look at us, we just share a cold cup of tea etc) and didn't do one for you.

dementedma · 06/11/2021 18:32

Crackers - mostly tat
Bread sauce - looks like sick
Stollen - don’t like marzipan
Pantomimes

Cam2020 · 06/11/2021 18:32

I bloody hate pantomime and did even as a child!

I'm massively over work parties, but love the rest of Christmas!

Honeyroar · 06/11/2021 18:34

Most of it. I wouldn’t care if there was never another Xmas. Although I quite like some Xmas songs.

Jbh333 · 06/11/2021 18:34

I don’t do elf’s on shelves, visiting Santa ESP for overpriced breakfast, or Xmas eve boxes… I like to sit at home with pjs (pref new) family, food and a wine.

felulageller · 06/11/2021 18:35

Elf on the shelf
Christmas pudding and cake.
Photos of presents
Photos of family in matching Christmas clothes

I was born in the 60s and had never heard of Xmas eve boxes until quite recently and that was on mumsnet. Christmas for me is all about the food.
Middleagedfrog · 06/11/2021 18:45

The work involved (and I try to keep it simple).

Plus any new tradition that seems to involve more work eg Elf on the shelf, Xmas eve boxes, special bedding / clothes, brining turkey and now December 1st boxes. These will not feature in MAF's Christmas

Riapia · 06/11/2021 18:46

Christmas.

When people spend more than they can afford.
On things that nobody could possibly want.
For people they don’t even like.

HBomberGal · 06/11/2021 18:50

@indiesearcher

I'm not fussed about crackers, party poppers, tins of crappy chocolates...

Also not a fan of naff Christmas markets, it's a lovely thing in Germany, less so in my local town!

I can pass on office parties too and the need to 'fit everyone in' - I loved the quiet of last Christmas.

Blue lights, ick.

Elf on the shelf.

Over the top Santa experiences. In fact Santa, he should be Father Christmas!

MIL buying too much small plastic crap for DC which largely ends up in landfill.

Ha, I was going to comment about hating Father Christmas! It's such an unbearably stuffy and proper name to me. Santa all the way - or Santy, that'd really make MN heads explode Grin
Babdoc · 06/11/2021 18:51

The neighbours fucking awful randomly flashing lights all over their house and garden that disturb roosting wildlife and keep me awake til midnight every fucking night for six fucking weeks.
Christmas pudding.
Cranberry sauce.
Plastic tat.
Elves/boxes/ any other silly modern additions
Did I mention the neighbours’ fucking lights?

HBomberGal · 06/11/2021 18:56

Mince pies - horrible things
Pudding - almost as bad but can be smothered in custard to hide it Grin

I do like 1st Dec boxes though, they make much more sense to me than Christmas Eve ones.

KeeefBurtain · 06/11/2021 19:13

I do it all! Except elf on the shelf, my two youngest are autistic and wouldn’t understand.

It’s just me, 2 late teens and 2 quite small children for Christmas every year - I don’t have close family, no one to visit or to visit us, so i over compensate on the unneeded extras instead of focusing on the loneliness tbh.

FireworkParrot · 06/11/2021 19:23

The things I really don't like are:

New traditions that aren't actually traditions but seem to be a way or marketing more crap to people....so Christmas Eve boxes/Elf on the shelf etc.

Blue Christmas lights....remind me of A&E.

Lebkuchen. I like ginger but just find the texture strange.

"Tat" presents that just end up in landfill....i.e. crap Secret Santa style gifts.

People changing their Christmas decorations every year because they have a "theme".....surely Christmas is the theme and it should be colourful and clashing and yes some new ornaments but also some really old ones that bring back memories.

That does make me sound a right old misery-guts I'm sure. The things I do like are:

Warm white fairy lights
Christmas carols
Eating seafood on Christmas Eve
Traditional dinner and Christmas pudding or cake
Baileys
Christmas jumpers
Being with family and friends
Giving presents
Candles

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/11/2021 19:52

@AuntieStella

Oh, and drippy carols - why In The Bleak Midwinter is so popular is beyond me, and I don't like Away In A Manger either
😱 !!!
HomeSliceKnowsBest · 06/11/2021 20:09

All of the tacky 'doing it for the 'gram' bullshit (elves, Santa breakfast/lunch/dinner/brunch/steam train jaunts/grottos)
Family pyjamas or matching jumpers/whatevers
Panto/'making memories' bullshit
Festive bedding/cushions/throws/crockery
Cheap crappy chocolate in microscopic tins
Spy devices for lazy parents to use to parent their children
Huge present piles and ostentatious displays of greed or gluttony
Anything with dead flies (raising/sultanas etc) in
The obsession with shitty Christmas adverts
All the poor dead trees and grotesque piles of landfill generated by one day.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 06/11/2021 20:11

Oh and surprises.
I do love Christmas, honestly.

ivfbabymomma1 · 06/11/2021 20:14

Apart from meat due to being a vegetarian I have to admit I get sucked into everything about Xmas 🤣🤣

ChristmasGrogu · 06/11/2021 20:19

Christmas Day with my family
Cold white/blue lights
Elf on the shelf
Elf cams/the smoke detectors are watching you
Boxing Day sales

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 06/11/2021 20:19

Crikey @HomeSliceKnowsBest you sure you love it? Grin
