I haven't seen this thread yet and it's one I enjoy - the annual game of fridge jenga!

Here is ours - no meat in there yet so not sure where that is going to fit 😬

There is lots of booze & juice as well as prawn cocktail, squirty cream & double cream, red cabbage, Savoy cabbage, sprouts, a gazillion cheeses
@formerbabe so you're assuming how people who are struggling are feeling, that's even worse to be honest. FFS.
Please explain where I said that.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 22/12/2020 12:31

I'm also not a fan of this thread. Our fridge is decently filled and it's only for the four of us. But seeing all those full fridges has made me anxious that we do not have enough. We are in Tier 4 in an area with rising rates, I am not keen to brave the shops which are extremely busy. We had our supermarket delivery on Sunday and had filled in our online order before France decided to close their borders, affecting freight of fresh produce, so it didn't occur to us to add a few extra fresh things to be on the safe side.

Anyway, clearly I am on the side of the grinches.

Duggeehugs82 · 22/12/2020 12:32

I dont think there is anything wrong with people posting peoples fridges. If its it's something that ur not able to do then dont click for the same reason i wouldnt go into primary edcation or anyone talking about their children education accomplishments. As my daughter is non verbal and has severe learning disability and dont want to see that. Thats not to say those people shouldnt post because of situation.

Duggeehugs82 · 22/12/2020 12:33

Because of *my situation.

Not going to post a photo so I don’t suppose I’ll be allowed to play...but it’s fun to look at others’ food selections!

We’re actually not going overboard this year.

I’ve decided today that I won’t be going out to get any more food at all. Just cannot be bothered. So we’re doing without a list of ‘essentials’ which aren’t actually essentials - we won’t have any cheeses. No whipping cream for the dessert, no Dijon mustard for the ham, no red currant jelly or similar for the cranberry sauce. Plus about ten other things. I will make do with what I have.

I’ve not got enough wrapping paper for the two last-minute gifts I’ve had to rustle up (long story, v. tedious and annoying) but I will do without that too.

This is the first year in a long time where I’ve reached ‘no longer give a f’ point. So I suppose I should hand back my Christmas board membership card. Xmas Sad

@formerbabe

Oh and I think the ops definition of scrimping and saving is probably very different to mine
Possibly. And in turn, yours is probably different to the definition used by other people, here or in other parts of the world.

I understand it's going to be a shit Christmas for a lot of people. But the solution to that is not those who are not in a shit position cutting down their expenditure to the same levels. That doesn't help the growers, producers, drivers, warehouse employees, pickers, packers, sales staff. I've been out today about bought various bits and bobs, all from small local businesses where the profit goes directly back into the local economy. I've bought British cheeses, so the money goes back to the wider economy. I could buy the bare minimum, mass produced and imported, and from Tesco, and that would still be keeping people in jobs, so still not a bad thing, but the difference in spending is not going to help long term if it sits in my bank account. Better to try and create more wealth and employment locally, long term.

I think those who have pointed out the multitude of other potentially upsetting threads on mumsnet make a valid point, particularly because this one is clearly titled.

formerbabe · 22/12/2020 12:53

@tentative3. How bizarre...I never suggested anyone should cut down on what they're buying Confused

MrsWhites · 22/12/2020 12:55

👏👏👏

1forAll74 · 22/12/2020 12:55

Don't complain if you all turn into fatties after Christmas. I have just read, that some supermarkets have now got shelves , stripped of food, leaving nothing for others.

MrsWhites · 22/12/2020 12:55

@Friendsoneuptown 👏👏👏

UndertheCedartree · 22/12/2020 12:59

@formerbabe - thank you Xmas Smile

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 22/12/2020 13:00

FFS to all the people saying it's in bad taste.

No one is bloody required to be on social media, this is the christmas thread on mumsnet, of course it's going to be a place of celebration. The old english traditions of feasting at Yule/christmastide are very much a part of the festival. Dont spoil people's fun.

Shitfuckoh · 22/12/2020 13:03

The difference in the replies to this type of thread last year & this year is staggering.
Before COVID people were using food banks, sadly they will be after Covid is a distant memory.
This year has been a hard one for many, not just people who have relied on food banks but also mentally for lots.
A thread like this is supposed to be lighthearted instead it's been brought down massively this year.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 22/12/2020 13:05

Ps the state of fullness of a fridge will be heavily impacted by your personal diet & doesn't equate to having spent loads!

I've young kids who get through loads of milk, so mine contains 14 pints of milk right now. That makes my fridge look full. Plus mine has loads of cheap but bulky veg - carrots, onions, potatoes, swede.

Let's not forget either that it is SENSIBLE in tier 4 to not shop very regularly. My fridge is very full because we are minimising shopping trips, so I bought enough to last.

AuntieMarys · 22/12/2020 13:07

Oh god, there are some joy suckers on here. I have a fridge full of vegetables ( we are 90% veggie and dd is with us who is ), 20 cheeses, tonic, cream and olives. But then that's what my fridge looks like all year round.
I won't be going food shopping for 6 days, everything will be used and the food bank hasn't been forgotten.
You'd probably think my drinks pantry is obscene.

rottiemum88 · 22/12/2020 13:07

I'm surprised a lot of these fridges can still work effectively when they're so overfilled!

That aside, I do agree with others who've said this is in bad taste. It might be a thread that's done every year, but this year has been incredibly hard on a lot of people and it is a bit in your face to be posting pictures of full fridges when there are vast swathes of the population facing joblessness and genuine food poverty.

JorisBonson · 22/12/2020 13:08

This thread has filled me with festive cheer Xmas Hmm

XiCi · 22/12/2020 13:08

I'll play when I get my delivery tomorrow. I only wish I had another fridge for all the booze Xmas Smile

UndertheCedartree · 22/12/2020 13:09

@FestiveStrop - well you certainly live up to your name! Xmas Grin I've been struggling the last few years but I still love seeing threads like this. Lots have more than me and I'm sure lots have less than me. It's still fun to join in even if your fridge is half the size of Op's and only half full - to us it's heaving! I might only have a few Christmas treats given to us by the Salvation Army but I can still keep telling the DC - don't eat those - they're for Christmas! Xmas Grin I know others may not feel the same as me but I love seeing what others have even though I might not have as much.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 22/12/2020 13:09

M/C people sometimes think they're classy posting what they HAVE ready for Christmas

Omg you are overthinking this!! We are just trying to have a bit of fun in a dreary time.

Christmas is a celebration and people are entitled to it.

Sod off to another thread if you don't like it. Two wrongs don't make a right - some people living in misery doesn't mean we all must.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 22/12/2020 13:11

Standing room only!

Show me your Christmas fridges!
Tangledtresses · 22/12/2020 13:11

Oh I was really loving checking out peoples fridges!!

More pics please 😃😃

00100001 · 22/12/2020 13:13

@1forAll74

Don't complain if you all turn into fatties after Christmas. I have just read, that some supermarkets have now got shelves , stripped of food, leaving nothing for others.
Oh well, it must be true of you read it somewhere... Source please?

Funnily enough the news and the supermarkets and other people are reporting quite the opposite...

MrsWhites · 22/12/2020 13:13

Those of you who think this thread is in bad taste, genuinely interested, will you be joining in next year or post Covid because people will still be struggling then, people will still be using food banks!

Also, will you not post on her or social media about holidays, day trips, birthday treats, takeaways, meals out etc, because there will always be people who are struggling and can’t afford these luxuries.

Genuinely not meaning this post to be goady, I just don’t understand why people think this year is different to any other, is it just because food banks, job losses and financial difficulties have been in the media more this year?

MrsWhites · 22/12/2020 13:15

@ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy I love how you have still managed to make room for the grapes! That looks like a great festive fridge!
