How old are your teens ?

My DD (18) loves a trip to London , we go about the 23d Dec.
Walk along Oxford Street .
Lunch .

My DS (20) would sooner eat his own spleen Xmas Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 16/08/2020 13:19

They are 16 and nearly 19 70 and my older one is 24 and usually comes with us. My DS 16 sounds a bit like your DS 20 Grin
We usually head to London at Christmas, but I wasn't sure about this year but might just go in November. The only thing that is putting me off is the tube in London at Christmas Hmm

Great thread OP! I've got plenty of ideas for younger DC, but as a parent of teens that stuff is of limited use!

How about gingerbread house decorating, or maybe that too is uninspiring for older DC.

MarshmallowManiac · 16/08/2020 13:39

I would like to try that Chaotic, maybe I can catch them on a good day Grin

A trip to buy and fill a personalised Quality Street tin, and a tree ornament each.
Putting up outdoor lights (under supervision)
Baking and decorating cakes or sweets - make it competitive
Making cocktails/mocktails
Outdoor swimming (we go on Xmas morning - I will miss that if it’s not on)
Trip to the beach for fish and chips
Cinema - there’s usually a Star Wars or other franchise movie out in December
Midnight mass / carol service
Choosing/decorating the tree
Out for a curry or other non-festive cuisine, or a themed takeaway night.
Give them a budget to make up stockings for the adults.
Make crackers, with their choice of fillers and jokes.
Party games on a Switch or better still Guitar Hero on a Wii - sure you can pick up the instruments very cheaply now.

I have panto tickets for Xmas Eve, so hope that will go ahead. I got last minute tickets last year and we sat in the very back row. It went down a storm because no-one could see them as they joined in with all the party dances and silliness!!

Chaotic45 · 16/08/2020 15:34

@MarshmallowManiac I'd recommend the kit from Lakeland, plus maybe a few extra sweets of their choice....

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/08/2020 15:37

My DDs - both in their twenties - had great fun making a gingerbread house last Christmas. To the point that their younger brother joined in. The girls are (hopefully) on a short break together until just before Christmas and have already pencilled in a gingerbread house making day for when they return.

TweeBree · 16/08/2020 15:41

Buy a couple of the elaborate 3D puzzles or lego sets.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/08/2020 15:45

We had a ‘best thing you can buy at a charity shop’ competition. Or you can make it ‘ugliest’ or any theme. Set budget low 3-5 quid and get an hour in a town with lots of charity shops. Fun and the charity shop makes money.
You could also try and sell them on eBay after to see if anyone wins.
Mine love a proper festive country pub after a bracing walk. We meet another family usually but not always.
We had younger cousins around for a Christmassy brunch early in the month. The older ones didn’t mind that I’d gone a bit crackers on the decor front then.

MarshmallowManiac · 16/08/2020 16:07

Fab ideas Shauna thanks so much, will definitely try these. Grin The panto near us is cancelled until next year, will really miss it. Hope your one goes ahead Smile
Also we usually take them for a Christmas Hot Choc in December, which we really enjoy. I usually gather all my points from Costa during the year and use it for our Christmas outing. [santa]

Walk/drive around where you live and look at all the pretty lights. Movie nights. Board games. Have a cupcake decorating competition. Karaoke. Make homemade decorations.

Tallandall · 16/08/2020 16:25

Movie night, scrabble, charades, Make a christmas orange pomander and orange slice decorations the house will smell devine, wrap up and go for a winter walk.

Crackery · 16/08/2020 16:38

I LOVE this thread!!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/08/2020 16:45

We have a domino set (but Christmas pictures in place of dots ) gets very compettive , Best of 3/Best of 5 extra points if you get the two ends to match up.

Definately not "Cards Against Humanity" - DD and I played but DS declared he wasn't going to play it With my Mother Xmas Grin

This year I have bought a new saucepan, a rechargeable mini whisk and a tub of Hotel Chocolat powder . I;ll give it a trial run when it gets colder . Hot chocolate and some nice biscuits with a film sounds good

MarshmallowManiac · 16/08/2020 17:05

Will be heading to Lakeland this year then thanks Chaotic Smile

Love a good wander round a charity shop Natural Grin

Fab ideas thanks guys, will definitely be trying these. Smile
Thanks 70 never played dominos, my DS loves CAH, think he would say that too though Sad Let us know how you get on with the HC Hot Choc powder, sounds yum Smile

I think Shauna has it right with the getting them to do things. Late teen years is exactly the right time to learn all the responsible organising things that The Adults have to do.

Putting up lights, as stated (probably don't need to do the testing and changing bulbs nowadays Grin)
Work out where to get the turkey from
Make biscuits
Make mince pies
Make sausage rolls
Make more mince pies
Decide the best time to go shopping for vegetables

You could have a Veg Prep Party on Christmas Eve, maybe listening to Carols From Kings if it's allowed to go ahead. As things stand at the moment you probably won't be able to attend a carol service, and if Midnight happens it will be short, said and decidedly weird. (Kings' choir are hoping they will be classed as a professional group and therefore allowed to sing - updates as they happen)

I suspect we'll be back on limited outings by then, so getting a whole load of films is a good standby. Various Christmas classics they haven't seen? They can't have seen them all, there are at least three a year for decades. (We watched Elf a little while ago, and the teens were decidedly too old...)

MarshmallowManiac · 16/08/2020 18:34

You're so right Merry, totally agree.
Think I'm going to add picking a tree out as one of the activities for them too [santa]

OP posts:
missyB1 · 16/08/2020 18:41

If Carols from Kings doesn’t go ahead I will cry loudly! Ditto the BBC young chorister of the year, I was so happy listening to that on Xmas eve last year.
I’ve got panto tickets for us all but I strongly suspect that will be cancelled.
I’m planning a big walk Christmas morning along a local canal then home for a special brunch. Games and a film in the afternoon and the big meal in the evening.

Floralnomad · 16/08/2020 19:14

We’ve booked the light trail at Bedgebury Pinetum for the Sunday evening before Christmas and our dc (21&27) will come to that - last year we went to Walmer Castle . I’m also away with dd (21) the first week of December and we will do the Christmas tree trail in Bournemouth if it’s on .

Teaandscone · 16/08/2020 19:30

Indoor fireworks are fun. 🎇 🧨

MarshmallowManiac · 16/08/2020 20:26

These all sound great, think I'm going to look at some of the castles near me and see if they've got any Christmas activities on [santa]

OP posts:
Cherryrainbow · 16/08/2020 21:25

Restaurants should hopefully still be open, why not venture to one and have stuff from their festive menu? Doesnt have to be for xmas/boxing day. They normally have seasonal stuff out around November December x

Plastictattoo · 16/08/2020 22:07

How about a Come Dine With Me? Set a budget, let them do the cooking and a cheesy prize for the winner?
Everyone picks their favourite TV Xmas special and take it in turns to watch them?
