How many gifts do your children have to open on Xmas day?

Not how much have you spent, but how many gifts do you think is enough?

Dd(4) has about 12 and a stocking. Dd(12) has 9 and stocking but much more expensive. Her pile looks small as it's mostly smaller sized things and I'm already feeling guilty and thinking about getting her extra 🙄

They also get a lot from my mum and extended family.

tisonlymeagain · 22/12/2019 10:06

About 12 each plus a stocking with about 10 smaller gifts. Sounds a lot but to be fair some are underwear and clothes, shower stuff etc that I'd end up buying anyway and will see them through until next year.

Knowhowufeel · 22/12/2019 10:08

Between 18 and 22 items each in total from us and spent around £200- £240 on each.
Older teens though, so harder to buy for, imo.
Will get from other family too.

I did tell them that unless I got a proper list off them of stuff they actually need/want, that they wouldn't be getting anything as I refuse to buy stuff just for the sake of it.
Consequently, several of the presents are quite practical/useful.
Personally, I'd rather not bother buying stuff just because 'it's Christmas', as they have most things they need, and I hate waste/don't see the point.

Popadoodledoooo · 22/12/2019 10:10

The older the get the less it seems you get for your money and the smaller things are! We’ve spent £500 in total on their presents and over £1200 on a trip as their main present and they’ll be opened within half an hour.

Now I know why my mum got so down on Christmas Day

APipkinOfPepper · 22/12/2019 10:14

Really interesting reading how different people do things! Mine have probably about 10 things in their stockings, and a main present from me and DH and one from each other. Like Some others though we don’t tend to do clothes as presents, just buy them as and when (maybe that will change as they get older?). There will then be several from MIL and some more from relatives on my side of the family (although we aren’t seeing them Christmas Day so that will spread it out a bit).

I love seeing how everyone does things differently.

As children we didn't have stockings but had a 'sack'- it was a festive pillowcase- which we put at the end of the bed. It would be filled with smaller gifts then bigger gifts around the tree. My parents liked to save up and really spoil us at Christmas- birthdays were much more reserved and they didn't buy us gifts through the year. I still remember the excitement of coming downstairs to a massive pile of gifts.

MIL did stockings and still does one for each of us now. She'll wrap little packs of tissues, a hot chocolate sachet deodorant, shower gel etc. Useful stuff that sometimes isn't all that useful 😂

My children have stockings and I tend to just put the smaller gifts in there- like a toothbrush, hairbrush, socks, notebook, stationery, pack of sweets... I don't buy small unnecessary toys that they'll never use just to fill the stocking.

girlygirl98 · 22/12/2019 10:22

I think we're literally at around 50 for the younger kids. It'd absolutely ridiculous I know. I myself have probably bought around 12 items ranging from the £25 mark down to £5.99. The rest is from extended family. My mother is the main giver. Every time we've visited in the last month she's issued me with a bin bag of gifts. I have considered giving them to charity but I don't feel comfortable or giving other people's gifts away

girlygirl98 · 22/12/2019 10:24

That's 50 each by the way. Now I've read this thread I feel like it's even more ridiculous

shreddednips · 22/12/2019 10:24

DS is 1. 4 presents from DH and me (2 are clothes) and a stocking with probably about 7-8 small presents. The stocking mainly contains a smart version of stuff he needs anyway (new flannel etc), favourite snacks and a banana.
Then 3-4 from my side of the family. DH's mum has gone wild with presents for him, probably more than he will be able to appreciate at his age but she's so excited about buying for him. We knew she was going to get him loads so we didn't buy much over the months leading up to Xmas so he's now actually in need of a lot of it (new pyjamas etc). I might suggest he opens a couple on Christmas Eve or I envisage present opening taking the whole day. It's more than I'd ideally like him to get but she doesn't get to see him as much as we'd both like because of her work, it makes her happy and he will enjoy what she's got so I don't think it's a battle worth fighting imo.

LoonyLunaLoo · 22/12/2019 10:25

DS (10) has 2 large gifts from me and DH, 12 from Santa and about 10 in his stocking (decent but cheap things, no plastic crap).

He’s got money from relatives and my parents make him a gift back of stocking filler type presents to go with their money.

Lc2006 · 22/12/2019 10:26

5 from us
5 from santa plus stocking
8 from family
Completely spoiled I know but they don't act it, they appreciate everything and don't get much else through the year

daveyfish · 22/12/2019 10:32

Ha Firecarrier, loads here too, have never thought of counting, also working class background and like a nice big pile Smile

LEELULUMPKIN · 22/12/2019 10:38

5 packages are under the tree for DS 14. However he has severe learning difficulties and doesn't really "get" Christmas.

I will wrap them and DH will open them for him as DS is unable to comprehend how to do it.

He is also totally non verbal so there are times I really envy those of you whose kids actually ask for something. Such a simple thing so many take for granted.

I would literally sell my soul to go all out and have the Christmas that I always dreamt about with my child.

We do have a wonderful time however, it's just different.

Merry Christmas one and all :)

BecomesHelen · 22/12/2019 10:38

Three from us/siblings (main present, small present, books)
One from each set of grandparents
One from each set of aunties& uncles
Another 3/4 from extended family
A very full stocking with 30 ish items in
One small present from Father Christmas

So 13/14 presents plus the stocking (which is mainly consumables for the older two but small toys/games for the younger two). Feels like loads!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/12/2019 10:39

Around 15

InTheCludgie · 22/12/2019 10:41

7 each plus stockings. The stockings and 4 tree presents are from Santa, other 3 are from us. There will probably be about another 15 or so from family and friends.

OldGrinch · 22/12/2019 11:01

Mine are 12 and 16, they always have a stocking, and been using the same stockings since they were little so know exactly how much fits in Grin stocking presents are all wrapped up and they get 14 small gifts in there, a mixture of nice things like benefit make up and perfume and a few jokey thighs and sweets. Then they have about 10 big presents to unwrap under the tree. Out of these one will be a "big" present which can be whatever they want up to a limit of about £100 and the others things like dressing gowns or clothes that they need. We don't have much extended family but my parents send them a £50 gift card as £50 cash each which is really nice of them and kids really appreciate that.

OldGrinch · 22/12/2019 11:02

Things not Thighs Grin

Titsywoo · 22/12/2019 11:05

Only about 8 for ds but one of his is expensive, about 12 for dd - both are teens. They have always had around 10 each from us.

WWlOOlWW · 22/12/2019 11:07

1 from me. Any more is ridiculous and unnecessary Grin

(Its an iphone 11).

JaJoJe · 22/12/2019 11:12

48 Santa gifts (Santa gifts are cheap gifts £1 or under usually, I bargain hunt for six months though so many RRP are higher than the £1 I pay)

8 gifts from me (the bigger budget item(s) like electronics mixed with a few cheaper items)

12 stocking items (half sweets/half small things like pens/bouncy ball, stickers etc...)

11 in Christmas eve box (pyjamas, hot chocolate, book, dvd, gingerbread, toothbrush, sweets etc...)

I'm definitely all about quantity, there's nothing like seeing your kids faces light up as the see a packed room - its how I grew up and I have such fond memories, birthdays aren't big gift events (more about parties/experiences) and we dont just get stuff for the sake of it all year round.

We also dont have guests over or go out and have a tiny family too so kids only really get other stuff from my mam.

17caterpillars1mouse · 22/12/2019 11:21

From us only (family go mad)

DD (3.5) has 7 tree gifts (one is a shared gift with her sister) and 11 stocking gifts (including chocolate and sweets)

DD (just 1) has 6 tree gift including the one shared with her sister and 8 stocking gifts (again including chocolatev/edible treats)

AppropriateAdult · 22/12/2019 11:32

I'm sure a lot of people who do loads of presents aren't posting because tbh most of these posts don't seem to do many. All the kids I know seem to get loads more.

I was just thinking the opposite! The idea of piles of 20+ presents for a single child seems very alien to me.

Ours will get 2 or 3 toy/game presents each from Santa, plus a selection box, a chocolate Santa and a stocking of small bits. Books and a new Christmas Day outfit from me and DH. Then maybe 8 presents from extended family and friends. I’ve really made an effort this year not to buy cheap toys just to bulk things out; they already have so many and they’re the bane of my life.
To me this is loads of stuff, and we’re very lucky to be able to do it. They will be wildly excited.

MrsOaf · 22/12/2019 11:38

ds is 25 and buying a house with gf so he has money and 6 gifts to unwrap

dd 18 is at uni and laptop is broken so she has a macbook air and 4 gifts to unwrap

Dss is 10, coming Christmas afternoon and has 15 presents to unwrap

BlueOooChristmas · 22/12/2019 11:49

I've just had a look at the spreadsheet (yes I have a spreadsheet lol). We have 2 DD, the eldest is 7 and the youngest 4.

The Christmas Eve Box has 8 gifts (mostly useful - PJs, dressing gowns etc). They are matched pretty evenly the only differences are things like Peppa Pig PJs for the youngest, Frozen for the eldest.

The stockings I've bought too much for. I hate doing them so started early and as a result didn't keep track of what I picked up. I have 15 gifts each but they don't all fit, so I have spread some to the Santa Sacks. They range from hair bows to LOLs to torches. Nothing over £10 as a rule.

Santa Sacks contain the gifts from Santa, they have asked for 3 things each and 3 I've added (selection box, soft toy etc). So 6 in total.

Then from us they have 11 each and 5 to share. Plus anything I've forgotten to add to the list.

So... 40 each and 5 to share.
