Christmas loving DH still wants us to do stockings

We have a nearly 3 year old and one on the way and each year we do stockings for each other.

We don’t spend a lot but it just seems unnecessary.

I’ve put my thoughts across and he thinks I’m being a Scrooge.

Does anyone else still do adult stockings for each other ?

Yes

ImportantWater · 02/12/2019 22:12

God, no. It’s hard enough to think of two presents for DH (from me and the kids) let alone a whole stockings worth. Anything small he wants he buys for himself, it would be impossible. I am coming out ina cold sweat just thinking about it Grin

mrsed1987 · 02/12/2019 22:13

Yep. We spend about £20. Its usually chocolates sweets and lip balms (for me obvs not the dh)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/12/2019 22:13

We do here. Any house guests receive them too.
Luckily we are as crazy as each other, I can see it being a drag if one isn't into it.

So far for DH I have...
Tin of Dad Jokes
Scout Top Trumps
Chilli gummy sweets
95% chocolate (to buy)
Pants. (to buy)

Need to get working on it. Complication this year is we are on holiday so needs to be plane friendly

ParkheadParadise · 02/12/2019 22:14

I was the youngest of 6. My mum still did a stocking for me after I was married 😂😂😂.
Every Christmas day I would go to her house and it would be hanging up for me. My siblings used to laugh their heads off i loved it.
I miss it, I still have the stocking but it's not the same now my mum is no longer here.

KenDodd · 02/12/2019 22:15

I wish I'd done this. I wish we'd put stockings down stairs by the fireplace for all of us. Father Christmas just doing stockings and us doing other presents. My children are older and have stockings on the end of their beds which means we're now waiting up until all hours for them to fall asleep. So, I'm with your husband, do a stockings for each other, it's a lovely idea.

OrangeZog · 02/12/2019 22:15

Yes, always.

roiseandjim · 02/12/2019 22:24

Me and my DH are finally spending a Xmas eve/morning together (been together 10 years no DC) and we're doing stockings for each other! So far he's given me 2 of my stocking fillers as he couldn't wait- a hardback book and a long hot water bottle. I'm glad he gave them to me because then I could have the chat about what a stocking filler actually is. Although I shouldn't of said anything and had the best stocking ever 😂

Grinchly · 02/12/2019 22:28

No. Stop it as soon as possible.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/12/2019 22:29

I love having a stocking. It doesn't have to be expensive but its always so lovely.

SatsukiKusakabe · 02/12/2019 22:30

Yes - dh made me one the first year we were together and we’ve carried on since. We get a few things the same each year - I get him a particular bottle of beer, chocolate raisins and Christmas socks, a big pack of Curly Wurly chocolate bars and a chocolate orange - I put it all on the Christmas shopping order, and then get one or two other items according to need like swimming goggles, multi-tool, car ice scraper, Costa voucher, paperback, gloves, beanie hat, boxers, thermos mug (these were all things I could remember from previous years, not all at once)

I can see why you would think you can’t be bothered as it all can get a bit much but it is quite nice to do.

pallisers · 02/12/2019 22:33

This. Also the dog. We don't really do any other presents though - maybe a book. It is easy enough - magazine, orange, chocolate, funny thing, socks. I do my own stocking and dh adds to it.

ElluesPichulobu · 02/12/2019 22:35

yes of course adults should have stockings.

useful things. stuff you need anyway like pants and socks. a book, a DVD and nice chocolates and something alcoholic.

my parents still get stockings and they are both nearly 80. so I am certainly not too old.

EightiesBaby · 02/12/2019 22:37

We do stockings for each other that just contain our favourite Christmas treats. For him, it's twiglets, pretzels, pork scratchings and traditional socks 😂 for me it's a Terry's chic orange, toboerone and Turkish delight!x

Jocasta2018 · 02/12/2019 23:13

With me it's not so much Xmas stockings but I have to send a note to Santa Claws with hints on what to get my cat for Xmas. Come Christmas morning there's always a pressie for the cat under the tree from Santa Claws!
Santa Claws is only contactable through my Dad. Whenever I have a pet (ie most of my life), I drop Santa Claws a line.
Completely separately, my Dad's cat & my cat gift each other their current favourite food. They're not close enough for personalised Christmas cards. Yet.
I'm 47.

dreichXmas · 02/12/2019 23:19

In my mid 40's, DH has made me a stocking for the last 20 years.
MIL was a little taken aback on her first Xmas morning in our house to get one but they are one of my favorite parts of the day.

Just been doing some shopping for them.

BillieEilish · 02/12/2019 23:23

Yes, everyone I know does too.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 02/12/2019 23:25

Yes, I’m trying to work out how to stop it. I buy all the presents for 3 kids, and stockings for each of them, and wrap them all. Doing a stocking for dh as well is just more work, even if it is full of socks and food. He thinks all the little presents inside the stockings should be wrapped, too.

I’ve been doing it for 18 years and I wish we’d never started. He does one for me too - loads of little things I don’t want or need, things he’d know I don’t like if he ever listened to me. And then I have to discreetly charity-shop it all, more work. He’s a hoarder and my house is full of crap. Aagh.

Well, that was cathartic. I think I’m going to make him do all the wrapping this year. And maybe he can do a charity shop run before Christmas...

Bluerussian · 02/12/2019 23:32

Oh yes, Christmas stockings for adults are great fun.

didireallysaythat · 02/12/2019 23:32

I just want to stop it. DS2 still believes (or maybe he's figured it out but doesn't want to let on). I stupidly did one of DH for the last few years but can't be arsed this year, and I feel similarly about one for DS1. I don't get one so I'm feeling rather put upon.

Topbird29 · 02/12/2019 23:33

We do, and my mum gets one as staying the night. Only has a couple of bits - a can of g &t (or other beverage), a choc reindeer or similar, and maybe some other small thing. Nothing big or expensive, but we like it!!

MumOf1plusBump · 02/12/2019 23:37

Aww that's lovely. We're together 10 years and I've never thought of doing that (we do presents under the tree). I think I'm going to start that as a new tradition Grin.

Ps Christmas isn't about doing 'what's necessary'

caringcarer · 02/12/2019 23:42

Everyone in our home gets a stocking. I think I would cry if Santa did not come to me. I do a stocking for my 2 grand kids too.

Why would you not want to? As my children have grown up they put things into our stockings too. everyone creeps around our house on Xmas Eve.

caringcarer · 02/12/2019 23:46

We give children and grandchildren one nice gift from us and the rest is from Santa.

riotlady · 02/12/2019 23:57

I had my last stocking from my parents last year (at age 26 xD) so this year I have insisted my partner and I do them for each other! I love stockings
