Christmas loving DH still wants us to do stockings

We have a nearly 3 year old and one on the way and each year we do stockings for each other.

We don’t spend a lot but it just seems unnecessary.

I’ve put my thoughts across and he thinks I’m being a Scrooge.

Does anyone else still do adult stockings for each other ?

We do stockings for adults, it's never occured to me that we wouldn't. My parents do one for all the adults and all the kids - think it will be 23 this year, all in a huge line on the sitting room fireplace Smile

speakout · 03/12/2019 13:38

I know my audience & get things I know they like. I don’t understand the whole “We don’t like Christmas tat” thing. Buy things you know will be used/eaten/drunk - no need for “tat”.

Well said ChestnutSmoothie stockings in our house are not full of useless junk either. The type of thing that goes into your adult stockings sound very similar to ours.

I know what my family need/ like.
No plastic tat or crap .

dreichXmas · 03/12/2019 14:15

We also don't have tat.
We have food, drink, bath stuff, coffee, mazagines maybe, nail care, luxury socks.
High quality versions of things we would use anyway.

Astrabees · 03/12/2019 14:27

Yes, everyone in our house on Christmas eve gets one, and DH and I do one for each other. My sons are now 25 and 28 and still get quite excited about it. My (late) mother had one up to her last Christmas visit when she was 90, and it meant a lot to her too.

HeatedDryer · 03/12/2019 14:31

Yes but.....we do our own!Grin Which means I magically get all the things I really wanted! We don't do main presents for each other and this is our way of treating ourselves. Still do them for 10 and 15 year old DS of course!

Wallywobbles · 03/12/2019 14:34

Yup. Everyone gets bathroom stuff, pants socks, game, hair ties and that kind of thing. DH and I don't get much to be fair but it's my preferred part.

blackteaplease · 03/12/2019 14:39

We do and then we all open them together. It's mainly socks pants olives nice soap etc. All stuff that will be used.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 03/12/2019 14:45

Absolutely not. I could not be arsed with that!

BarbedBloom · 03/12/2019 15:31

Yes, we do. Spend about £20

Sniv · 03/12/2019 19:17

We don't, but I can see us moving to just stockings one day. Why not? Most of what I want for Christmas is little things anyway: a beer, socks, stationery, art and craft stuff, sugar free chocolate, soap, second hand books. My DP is similar.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 04/12/2019 07:26

Definitely thinking I might find £20 in the budget for DH and me to have stockings now. Apple and orange, jam, socks, chocolate orange, (kindle) book in a box to make it look like a present, bar of Green & Blacks... Yes, I could make this work.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/12/2019 10:03

I do agree with no tat, so I don't put any quirky 'novelties' or Christmas socks in adult stockings. With the odd exception only things that will def. be eaten/ drunk/worn. Adult dds always like/expect nice new socks and knickers.
One year ages ago I did find a little wooden dish for dh - specifically for putting coins out of trouser pockets in at night. And despite mostly using Apple Pay now he still uses it.

Mumtobe193 · 04/12/2019 10:25

Me and OH have never gotten anything for each other at Christmas since we’ve had kids. It’s not that we don’t want to, it’s just that we already have a tonne of people to buy for plus our own kids so money is usually too tight.

Anyway we thought it was a real shame that neither of us ever have anything to open on Christmas morning so we’ve decided we’re gonna spend £25 each to fill a stocking for each other, it will be mainly socks/lip balms/chocolates and little joke token presents purchased from the likes of b&m, Primark etc. But it will be lovely to get a little something, I’m really looking forward to it.

UndertheCedartree · 04/12/2019 16:19

I've never had a stocking as an adult but it sounds really nice.

speakout · 04/12/2019 16:44

I've never had a stocking as an adult but it sounds really nice.

I think it can be a nice thing to do.
I first started adult stockings 5 years ago when my niece and her husband came to stay with us over christmas.
She grew up in an ultra religious family ( think Westbro Baptist church), and had never had a stocking as a child. ( no christmas trees, father christmas- eiher all those dangerous "pagan" things.
So I thought it would be nice to indulge her- and he rest of my family- and go through the process of putting out biscuits, carrots, hanging the stocking etc.
She was 35, but so delighted with the whole idea, that I continued.

Probably the one who enjoys the stocking most is my 86 year old mother- she gets very excited at finding a stocking for her on christmas morning!

GreenTulips · 04/12/2019 16:46

Mine no longer believe abs we all get stockings

DH does mine and I do his and the kids - sometimes he sees little gifts and will buy those for them to add to it

It’s nothing grand

A mug, chocolates, something silly - we had bugs last year and had bug races in the hall!!
The year before we have mini games which was fun to play.

Pyjamaface · 04/12/2019 16:47

My Mum still does stockings for everybody so we just do one for DS. I love them!

It's just silly little things like socks, hand cream, chocolates etc

SquishySquirmy · 04/12/2019 19:43

We do and I love it.
We spend Christmas with wider family, so open main presents in a large, jolly group which is lovely.
But the stockings are opened first thing in the morning just me, dh and DC in our bed and I really love that we get to have that special time with just us before proper, busy Christmas starts. Best of both worlds!

tinyvulture · 04/12/2019 19:50

No, but my DP’s grown up kids (the eldest is not much younger than me) will still get them from their parents! I would quite like a stocking to be honest, but it’s never gonna happen....... And I would probably be arsed to do one for DP if I thought he would do me one back, tho it would be more stuff to think about..... Instead I just do one for my young daughter, and two for my best friend’s dogs! 🤣

Nonnymum · 04/12/2019 19:55

I would love to but my DH is rubbish at presents he just doesn't get the idea of stockings. I blame his parents who never did them either. I've always did them for my DC though even when they were in their 20. He didn't get that either!
