Christmas loving DH still wants us to do stockings

We have a nearly 3 year old and one on the way and each year we do stockings for each other.

We don’t spend a lot but it just seems unnecessary.

I’ve put my thoughts across and he thinks I’m being a Scrooge.

Does anyone else still do adult stockings for each other ?

Of course, I do him one and he does me one.
His has a chocolate orange and chocolate Brussels sprouts, Christmas coffee, gin miniatures, socks, a running armband for his phone and reusable straws so far this year. Looking for a couple more things.
Mine is always chocolate, teabags, also alcohol, an eye mask and nice bath oil.

Bickles · 03/12/2019 00:04

Also my mum still does stockings- one for DS and a joint one for me and DH. They are from her, not Santa and are opened on Boxing Day.

Xmasbaby11 · 03/12/2019 00:10

My best friend and I do a stocking for each other - it's been going for nearly 30 years! We take great pleasure in it and buy fun things like unusual flavoured crisps or favourite chocolate. We don't live near each other so we have a day together to exchange stockings. One of my favourite days of the year!

I don't do stockings with DH. He hates bits and bobs and doesn't really want any presents at Xmas.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 03/12/2019 00:14

Lol at Santa Claws

magicstar1 · 03/12/2019 00:15

We have my parents, brother and his girlfriend for dinner Christmas Day. We do stockings for them all and they open them before dessert. They love them and we get great enjoyment out of putting them together.

Purpleartichoke · 03/12/2019 00:26

We started doing adult stockings last year at the request of our then 9yo dd. She didn’t think it was fair only kids got stockings. I’m happy we started. It’s fun and easy and means I might actually end up with a surprise or two on Christmas morning.

73kittycat73 · 03/12/2019 01:11

My mum and me have been exchanging stockings the past few years. I just see it as an extra bit of fun. Xmas Smile

FenellaMaxwell · 03/12/2019 01:16

Yes always. DH’s parents didn’t do them as a child and his face when he opened his first one at 29 was really something!

MashedSpud · 03/12/2019 01:36

Yes. Dc have left home but we still have a stocking for DH, myself and the cat.

Cookit · 03/12/2019 05:52

Yes, we all have stockings.

However I think we do stockings a little differently in that we don’t necessarily fill with small, cheap items we just put the Christmas presents to each other in them be them cheap or more expensive and just stocking size. I do the same for the kids and just whatever they’re getting that fits in the stocking goes in the stocking.

I’m really struggling to think of any presents this year and hate the waste of just buying some rubbish. I have a candy cane for DH only so far!

blibblibs · 03/12/2019 06:05

Anyone that wakes up in our house gets a stocking. So DM every year and sometimes a grown up neice or nephew.
It's usually always similar thing, soap and Choc ginger for DM, Choc orange and pants for DH, and I get my own Choc and DH puts the rest in.
DC have a massive one and it's even on one of their lists this year! One has asked for a laptop and knows how expensive they are but hopes santa will still manage a stocking too Xmas Smile

Aramox · 03/12/2019 06:19

One for everyone who’s here, dp and I do each other ‘s and share ds’s. Cheap bits, food and a little book but often I do it all in Tiger.

AugieMarch · 03/12/2019 06:21

We do. We wrap up things like a magazine, socks or snacks we like. Super cheap and fun. We have 2 dc who each get a stocking too.

HelenaJustina · 03/12/2019 06:39

Yes, I also do one for my widowed MiL. She nearly cried when I did it for the first time four years ago, as no one had made her one since she was a child.

It’s not too stressful, some nice nuts, chocolate, magazine, new toothbrush, satsuma, alcohol miniature for adults, some stationary for school for DC and a couple of surprise/silly bits. It is my eldest DC’s favourite bit of Christmas!

DamsonOnThisDress · 03/12/2019 06:51

We don't. But then we both view it as buying crap for the sake of it. Nice idea but wasted on us.

Bad enough feeling obligated to think of stuff for the kids' ones now that they're 14 and 12. There's only so much lip balm and sweets from B&M one needs...

Tbh the only stocking I enjoy doing is the dog's. She appreciates and eats all the tat in hers.

I certainly won't find it shoved down the back of her bed with stuff still in it come March.

orangeicecream · 03/12/2019 06:53

No stockings for adults here. In fact, I never had one as a child either.... Plenty of normal pressies but no stockings. I do them for my teenagers but will stop at 18. They are a faff...and my two would prefer the money went towards their other presents already.

HeronLanyon · 03/12/2019 06:54

I did secret stockings out of the blue recently when staying at a cottage for Christmas with 4 adults - 2 into their 80s. Noone knew who had done them - the look of delight on everyone’s faces was worth the middle of the night creeping around etc. Just for a moment I think 3 adults regained their faith (don’t know why it had lapsed - seems to for some eh?).
Away this year abroad and taking small stocking type effort even though with only two of us it will be a bit obvious santa asked me to help out.
Other than that no but surprise stockings every now and then are great !

elQuintoConyo · 03/12/2019 06:56

Yes, we exchange them. A book, pair of socks, chocolate, tangerine, keyring (no keyring on the car key and we only have one, scared of it getting lost!), guitar tuner (electronic thing).

We don't do main gifts to each other, we look money and buy something for the house, like a chest of drawers, microwave or electrician (electrics here are shocking and we're missing three lights!).

I love stockings, as do DH and our 8yo.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 03/12/2019 07:05

No, not for grownups here. Father Christmas stops when you go to Uni, but Mum and Dad take over until you set up a family unit of your own. (There will be a note for DS1 explaining this on the last Advent Sunday. With his blessing, it's just to keep it going because I think DS3 still believes). I had my last stocking at 24, just after I'd got engaged and bought a flat with now DH - I met him on 31 December the previous year, and it was agreed that it was Not Fair I hadn't known that stocking would be the last one. So, Father Christmas came once more for luck. I know my brother does one for DM since DDad died, as he lives with her.

It would, I suppose, be very easy to do one for DH and I, because Father Christmas buys to a pretty predictable pattern and brings useful things like socks and pyjamas. Maybe I'll think about it.

stridesy · 03/12/2019 07:06

Yes although I do more practical. Oh goes more silly but then I buy for everyone.
I do however remember how difficult it was shopping when pregnant. Dd was born on the 6th December and Xmas was the last thing on my mind plus suffered from breathlessness so walking round asda felt like I’d run the marathon.

speakout · 03/12/2019 07:19

Absolutely.

We all get stockings ( my family do mine) my youngest is 19 and oldest family member is 86. Elderly mother probably loves getting one the most!
Not tat, just nice things that will get used- USB stick, shower gel, socks, sweets, alcohol miniatures, chocolates, socks, make up, chilli sauce, and of course a coin and a satsuma.

Never too old for stockings.

HeronLanyon · 03/12/2019 07:27

Plus Small bamboo type bowls, small kitchen utensils, temporary tattoos (we all wear them for Christmas in honour of dearly departed relative who lived in horror of tats). I actually love stockings more than bigger stuff - always have. I must be a cheap date !

sueelleker · 03/12/2019 07:33

I find it easier to get lots of little bits than a main present, so I do stockings and maybe just one 'big' present.

Ragwort · 03/12/2019 07:40

No stockings here, I just find you end up buying useless stuff that no one wants or needs. Have been doing them for my DS (now 18)) as he said he always loved them but last year I found half the stuff unused and barely unwrapped a few months later ... so I said no more stockings.

He is now at uni & I did relent & gave him a ‘shoe box’ of stuff when we visited in Nov, mostly food & cleaning supplies for his shared flat Grin.

The last thing I want is a stocking full of bits and pieces.

BlueOooChristmas · 03/12/2019 07:41

We have DD(7) and DD(4) who both get one. This year I decided to do one for me and DH too. I was going to let him do mine but I know I'll get lots of "well how much have you spent" and "how many gifts roughly" so I've decided I'm doing both and then if he wants to he can take over mine next year. I'm seeing my stocking this year as my reward for doing the other three. Grin The kids are already sorted but DH still needs a few more bits.
