Christmas loving DH still wants us to do stockings

We have a nearly 3 year old and one on the way and each year we do stockings for each other.

We don’t spend a lot but it just seems unnecessary.

I’ve put my thoughts across and he thinks I’m being a Scrooge.

Does anyone else still do adult stockings for each other ?

No. Never had a stocking since I stopped believing in Santa.

One2Three4Five6 · 03/12/2019 07:49

We do.
I am 33 and have never not had a stocking to open on Christmas morning.
When I stopped believing in Santa, I convinced my parents I still needed a stocking so my siblings didn't suspect (they didn't take much convincing, I think they weren't ready to let it go either)
Then when I moved out with DH he made one up for me, I did the same for him as his parents had never stopped either, we had talked about the fact it would be our first year without one, and it made us both a little, not sad, maybe nostalgic. So decided to carry on
We both love Christmas, so will probably continue to do stockings every year.

It's not to everyones taste, but that's fine. We enjoy waking up to some small goodies before breakfast :D

speakout · 03/12/2019 07:59

Ragwort surely that depends on what you buy?

If you stuff stockings full of "stuff that no one wants or needs" then of course it is pointless.
If however you fill stockings full of things that people need, want and enjoy then it is a whole new ball game.....

HeronLanyon · 03/12/2019 08:08

care there may just be a correlation there?

Ragwort · 03/12/2019 08:08

Totally agree with you Speakout but what I consider is useful and a ‘treat’ is not necessarily what I would receive, likewise what I chose for my DS he clearly didn’t like much either Grin.

I could happily make myself a stocking full of small gifts, in fact I will as, by choice, I am alone this Christmas Grin.

SandyClawsIsComingToTown · 03/12/2019 08:21

Absolutely, even the dog has a stocking. But I won’t buy unnecessary tat for the sake of filling the stocking so some main presents go in if they fit. And the rest is usually food and alcohol treats.

tinselvestsparklepants · 03/12/2019 08:32

My dh and I are only doing stockings for ourselves this year. No dcs. Love stockings, don't feel the need for the bigger presents (though we only just decided not to do them this year and suddenly the stockings are getting very full Grin)

ColdRainAgain · 03/12/2019 08:36

Yes! Stockings are the best bit about Christmas.

There will be 4 adults all over 60 in my parents house on Christmas morning. There will be 4 stockings, and probably about 8 presents.

ImportantWater · 03/12/2019 08:43

I’m really surprised at how many people do adult stockings! Not judgementally so, I just had never realised it was a thing.

SeaViewBliss · 03/12/2019 08:46

We do either/or. If there is nothing particular that either of us want, we do stockings of all our favourite food/chocolate/smellies/undies and usually a couple of books.

If there is something a bit more costly, we don't. Personally, I prefer the stocking!

Apolloanddaphne · 03/12/2019 08:50

I still do them for us even though my DDs are adults. I put things in them that they use like toiletries, socks, jewellery plus chocolate coins, oranges etc. I will do one for my DM this year as my DF died in the summer and she now has no-one else to fill hers. I will also do them for DD1 and her OH even though they won't be with us until the 29th. I think I like the stockings the best on Christmas Day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/12/2019 09:28

Yes, everyone in our house gets one, inc. any guests. But in their case it might just be a pair of socks - one stuffed inside the other - and a few little bits, chocolate, mini hand cream/whisky miniature etc. and of course a satsuma in the toe.

Must admit it was a bit of a chore one year when the house was stuffed with 9 humans and 3 guest dogs, but at least the guests did the dogs' stockings. 🌲🐶

Cookit · 03/12/2019 09:39

The stopping as soon as you don’t believe seems terribly sad. So you announce one year at maybe 8 years old than you know it’s your parents really and instead of everything carrying on with you that bit older a lot of the Christmas traditions just abruptly end? Would you still do advent calendars?

gillys · 03/12/2019 09:48

Yes we all have stockings & my parents are in their 70s.
Usually sweets & toiletries. Dd 's stocking might have a couple of more interesting bits in hers but always a chocolate orange.

SatsukiKusakabe · 03/12/2019 09:49

I know cookit it is the family rituals and traditions that make Christmas magical for children. My parents didn’t make a big deal about F.C. for very long, it was all just under the tree and it lost the excitement a bit.

ChasingRainbows19 · 03/12/2019 09:54

Yup we have no kids. Still have decorations advent calendars, gifts and yep stockings we do a £10 Budget stocking usually chocolates and bits. We both love Christmas and it's all fun.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 03/12/2019 09:57

I had my first stocking ever last year at 28. We'll do them for each other this year. Not tat, just little things we know the other person will like. I love it, it seems thoughtful and sweet.

ChestnutSmoothie · 03/12/2019 10:04

I also do one for everyone that wakes up here Christmas morning. This year I’ve got 12 to do!

I don’t fill them with tat no one wants. I fill them with treats that people tend not to buy for themselves.

MIL (for example) is getting: a small box of lemon bath salts, Christmas tissues, Fever Tree & Gin cracker, bed socks, chocolate sprouts, box of mints, Tea Pigs Festive Tea, Christmas fudge, a satsuma and some nuts.

I know my audience & get things I know they like. I don’t understand the whole “We don’t like Christmas tat” thing. Buy things you know will be used/eaten/drunk - no need for “tat”.

NewYoiker · 03/12/2019 10:07

@BlueOooChristmas what're you putting in yours?! That's a fab idea!

Stefoscope · 03/12/2019 10:19

We don't really do 'big' presents for adults (if they want something they'll buy it themselves anyway), so mostly give three or four smaller treats or practical things. This way it's a surprise and you get the fun of opening more presents.

SurpriseSparDay · 03/12/2019 10:29

Absolutely!

Everyone from infant to octogenarian contributes to and receives a stocking. I also take things to be added to family stockings even if I’m not spending Christmas with them.

Lovemusic33 · 03/12/2019 12:27

We do stockings. I never had a stocking as a kid so feel I missed out. I’m a single parent so still have no one to do me a stocking so I do my own, mainly with little things I need and a few treats. The DS’s are now teens and say the stocking is the best bit.

SurpriseSparDay · 03/12/2019 12:38

Is there any reason why your teenage children cannot, between them, put together a stocking for you?

Lovemusic33 · 03/12/2019 12:43

My dc’s? Both of my dc’s have autism so can’t really shop without me Sad, their dad doesn’t take them shopping either (he doesn’t see them much).

Carnabie · 03/12/2019 13:01

We do. It’s easy to get forgotten about at Christmas when you have children, we buy each other something we need and in laws and parents mostly give us money. It’s a nice way to give the little personal bits that we wouldn’t otherwise get eg favourite chocolates, some nice gloves, a book...yes we could just buy them for ourselves but it’s lovely to have someone else buy it for you.

We always buy each other a tree decoration too because Father Christmas has always put one in the children’s stockings
