Advent Calendars 2018 - delight or disappointment

Due to having a birthday not long before Advent starts I now have two calendars.
Yankee Candle - Day one - green tealight and holder - pine scented. I wouldnt usually buy a pine candle but it's quite pleasant.
Joe and Seph's popcorn - today was salted caramel, quite nice, not so exciting I'd buy a full size bag.

The badges were made by a venue for an event and then they sold the rest online in exchange for a charity donation to Shelter.

@fleabagmonkey is that handcream for guinea pigs or hand cream made out of guinea pigs? I like the image of them moisturising their little feet. Xmas Grin

Can I join? I have the glossybox one and loving it

  1. Nars matte lip
  2. Nip &Fab dragon's blood serum
  3. Yankee Candle - the perfect tree
  4. Philip Kingsley - body builder conditioner
LaurieFairyCake · 04/12/2018 18:40

I've got the Godiva ones - an absolute bargain. Beautiful chocolates and much cheaper than buying Godiva chocs

FelicityLemon · 04/12/2018 18:47

@fleabagmonkey and the packaging is no help either ... Xmas Grin

I got my dc3 a Schleich one and it’s RUBBISH. Yesterday he got a tiny blob of brown plastic in the shape of a small knife. I’ve looked on the back and it’s seems like that might actually be one of the highlights - at least it’s possible to tell what it is unlike some of the later green blobs.

gingajewel · 04/12/2018 20:14

I got my daughters the peppa pig one today reduced from £20 to £5 in Morrisons, they have choc ones but love this one. They opened all four today and have had a figure of a Christmas tree, a present, Pedro pony and peppa!

Also have the Sainsbury's gin advent calendar and really pleased with it so far Gin

rookiemere · 04/12/2018 20:43

I have the Boots 24 days of Christmas one:
Day 1 - handcream
Day 2 - eyeshadow brush
Day 3 - shampoo
Day4 - conditioner

It's not too bad as I paid £25 for it but wouldn't be greatly happy thus far at full price. Am regretting not getting M&S calendar now.

Misty9 · 04/12/2018 21:44

After forking out for playmobil calendars last year I've cut right back and made a fabric one this year (panel from John Lewis, quite straight forward) and stuffed it with mini chocolate snowmen and Santas from Aldi. And the kids LOVE it! They're so excited every evening to think the next day's pocket is getting filled overnight (I don't fill the lot as they're under 7 and that's too much temptation!) and it's less plastic so win win for us!

I might buy myself a belated picture one now though...

Milly848 · 04/12/2018 21:50

M&S - Eyeko mascara
Elle- Brazillian bum bum cream
Rituals - foaming shower gel

FreezerBird · 04/12/2018 22:04

The kids have a Lego one, which I think isn't as good as previous years.

I've got this one for myself. I love it - builds a woodland scene through December.

Day 1: tree
Day 2: owl
Day 3: deer
Day 4: mushroom

Oh @FreezerBird that looks fabulous! Where did you get that from?

ScouseQueen · 04/12/2018 23:16

hairypaws This thread's fun but there's also a specific Glossybox one if you want to hop on that too!

DH and I have boring chocolate ones, but DS (2) has a paw patrol one that I bought in Boxing Day sales last year Grin

Day1- A polar bear... after seeing the pups on the box he was very disappointed and tried to put it back in and open another door instead (we had to explain that’s not how it works...)
Day 2- Chase (he was much happier)
Day 3- Zuma (he insisted that it was going to be Rocky, but was still happy when he got Zuma)
Day 4- Skye (again he insisted it was going to be Rocky, but was delighted to get Skye)

ohtheholidays · 05/12/2018 01:42

I've got the Cath Kidston one and I love it,my lovely DH bought it for me as a surprise,so far I've got some hand creams(they all smell amazing and are really thick like hand cream used to be and the packaging is gorgeous)and some lip balm.

I think this is my favourite so far as advent calendars that I've had over the years.

NoNameIdeas · 05/12/2018 06:49

I haven't had a beauty calendar before but got treated to the '24 days of beauty' WE one from Boots...I love it! So far I've received:

Soap and Glory hand food
Mark Hill MiracOILicious shampoo
Mark Hill MiracOILicious conditioner
Masqd Face Tools Concealer Brush
Joules bath fizzer

Can't wait until tomorrow!

WWYDhelpplease · 05/12/2018 06:54

Someone asked why I am disappointed with the decleor one. Well, most of the items are tiny ones that if you went to a counter they would give as a sample for free.

There are a few good travel sizes but those amount to about £40 of value. Just disappointed, even some of the little tubes I’ve been given and used for overnight travel have one tiny application in them.

Back to marks and spencer next year!

SittHakim · 05/12/2018 06:58

I have the John Lewis one - got it half price on Saturday (and then reduced further as I had some vouchers to use up). So far I have had:

  1. Nars lip glide (not my colour - gave that to the school tombola)
  2. Laura Mercier primer (love this)
  3. Dermalogica pre-cleanse balm
  4. REN AHA tonic
  5. Elemis pro-collagen marine cream

Haven't tried any of the last three yet, but happy so far!

JustLurkingAway · 05/12/2018 07:07

Day 5:

Body Shop - Strawberry shower gel, smells lovely!

Nivea - And it was now that I realise I opened 14 yesterday instead of 4Blush so 4 shall be opened on the 14thGrin today's offering was a blueberry lip butter.

FreezerBird · 05/12/2018 07:48

Day 5: fox.

@Bellie99 The calendar is by Meri Meri - I can't remember where I got it as I saw it in a magazine, but was out of stock at the supplier they were advertising, so I found it somewhere else online.

Googling to check I had the maker's name right, I see they do lots of lovely similar ones.

@FreezerBird thank you! Will search one out for next year. It looks lovely.

fleabagmonkey · 05/12/2018 08:54

To follow on from my guinea pig hand cream yesterday, today I have Alpacas scented soap!

I agree with the previous poster however and I am loving my Cath Kidson calendar, the products are lovely, just the packaging makes me laugh!

Love Freezer's woodland scene! Today's selection is Banoffee popcorn and cinnamon tealight, but that would probably have worked well the other way round too.
