Any Ponces Around?

My mincemeat is melting in the slow cooker atm, and it made me feel nostalgic for the Poncetastic thread. I've had a search, but can't see it.

I'm happy if someone else wants to start it, or this could be it!

Most of my poncing is kitchen based, although I'm planning to make seashell angels this year too, and maybe do something fiddly with acorns.

Also, I'm going to attempt to knit some presents.

Anyone out there? I'm poncing off now, but will check in later.

I've found my home. ❤️😍
This year I will have an 8 week old at Christmas so trying to be as organised as possible now. (might have to scale it back😢)
I've got Christmas pudding brandy ready and I'm already buying the bits I need to make a huge batch for next year as it has gone down so well this year already.

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/09/2018 22:33

I moved house this year and there will be more opportunities for poncing. Unfortunately I no longer have a fireplace 😥 so I'm having to get creative with my non-tree decorations.

On my poncing list for this year is
Redcurrant gin - already maturing to be used in prosecco cocktails
Needle felted baubles for the new tree I've bought for the hall.
Some decoupage letters for the end panel of my kitchen cabinets.
I've made some chilli jam and some redcurrant jelly.
Christmas cake and individual Christmas puddings.
I want to make a Nutella twist tree for a festive breakfast and I'm checking out Pinterest for chocolate deserts as only DH likes Christmas pudding.

I did a wreath course at my local NT property last year. It was pretty good but I'm going to freestyle this year. I've already bought a wire frame from Hobbycraft and need to ask at the florist about greenery.

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/09/2018 11:28

I also bought a cookie cutter to make mini gingerbread houses to put on the sides of mugs.

I suspect this may be a ponce too far for DH 😂

MrsCrimbo74 · 14/09/2018 11:47

NoWordForFluffy do you live near a Hobbycraft?, I did wreath making last year and it was only £10, and the wreath at the end was beautiful

WellTidy · 14/09/2018 12:00

Bloody loving this. I am a ponce through and through. Already have my wrapping paper, ribbons and tags sorted (co-ordinating, not matching, natch) and am salivating over the Good Housekeeping get ahead of Christmas magazine, wondering if I am a bit too late for chutneys!

Planning some spiced pear and fig chutney, clementine and cranberry chutney, plum jelly and some gins.

NoWordForFluffy · 14/09/2018 12:27

@MrsChrimbo74, there isn't one in our town, but I don't think we're too far from one. I'll check it out!

I've just bought my little oranges for drying. I'll pick some apples off my tree in the morning, slice them all thinly, and stick them in a low oven for most of the weekend in between installing new skirting boards, which is decidedly un-poncey.

Marylou2 · 14/09/2018 15:10

Novice poncer here. I always mean to do it but leave it too late. I take it that starting early is key. I’m going to sit down with Delia and Nigella and do some pre-poncing preparation this weekend. Mincemeat sounds just the place to start.

Huntlybyelection · 14/09/2018 18:51

I have my fabric for making tops. But not a lot of time on the horizon to make them.

I would love to find out how you dry oranges for decoration.

And my neighbour has a massive apple tree and I'm planning on stealing a lot of apples shortly. What do you do with thinly sliced oven dried Apple?

And what can I bake with apples?

RaisinRainbow · 14/09/2018 19:24

My highest fantasy is a tree bedecked in natural decs that I have personally ponced.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 14/09/2018 23:15

I also bought a cookie cutter to make mini gingerbread houses to put on the sides of mugs.
Great idea!

Hello
Ncp change but love these threads.

Garlands - do not be afraid. Lots of options:

You can buy a shop one and tie stuff on with wire, string and ribbon. Lovely copper wire in Hobbycraft or pipe cleaners.

Wisteria vines (find someone who is pruning theirs) are great for garlands and wreaths. Just weave and tie together.

I find it best not to weave in and out but to tie to top or bottom of stair spindles like a swag IYSWIM.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 14/09/2018 23:54

I remembered a video which makes wreath making look manageable. Using Ivy as the vine here (wearing gloves)

RaggieDolls · 15/09/2018 08:20

I love a good hard ponce so please can I join in? I usually have 6 year old DD to help me and every year the result gets a bit better as her attention span increases.

Loving the idea of the initial tags. Is that with an appliqué or cross stitch or AN Other?

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 15/09/2018 09:43

Thanks Peggy Smile.* *

I found a YouTube vid where she wrapped, but I think I like the sound of your tying idea better. I've ordered some fake greenery from eBay, and I'm going to wrap the lights around it before I turn it to the bannister, then pop some real bits of pine in all the way up and tie some baubles onto ribbon to hang. Here's hoping I don't make a hash of it...

at Hard Ponce.

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/09/2018 10:03

I have these for my garland. They are brilliant as they can be pulled tight but can be used year after year unlike traditional cable ties and because they are clear they are reasonably unobtrusive.

whatareyoueatingNOW · 15/09/2018 10:30

I love the ponce threads! I'm planning on making bramble alcohol, mincemeat, fudge, jams, jellies, puddings and cakes! Plus drying fruits and berries for decoration.

For those without a fireplace, this may be slightly too tacky for true ponce, but I'm doing something like this-

Any Ponces Around?
NoWordForFluffy · 15/09/2018 11:28

That's brilliant, whatareyoueatingNOW!

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 15/09/2018 14:00

whatyouareeatingNOW I love it Xmas Shock I'm almost sorry we do have fireplaces Grin

ipswichwitch · 15/09/2018 15:36

Love the gnomes mike

elQuintoConyo · 15/09/2018 16:10

Big fat poncey placemark here - covered in natural goodies from the woods and needlefelted robins Grin

I shall check in once i have completed my List of Things To Make.

dementedma · 15/09/2018 18:31

my poncery will be limited to christmas cake done at the end of September, and the blackberry vodka and pink grapefruit gin which is already underway.
I believe fudge can be made in a slow cooker. does anyone have a recipe?

crazyhairbear · 15/09/2018 19:13

Hi fellow poncers... long time lurker braving my first post.

Dreamt of poncing for so long and last year, our first Christmas in our own home I finally did it.

Need to step it up a gear this year so looking forward to reading everyone's ideas.

Oh and I found fudge in the microwave lot quicker and less messy than slow cooker fudge... takes minutes and tastes amazing!!

Alanamackree · 16/09/2018 09:24

I’m having a case of poncing paralysis. I was thinking of making placemats out of sheet music for my Christmas table. I couldn’t decide between printing them onto white raw silk which I would stiffen somehow or age the paper and glue onto thin sheets of plywood which I would grey and age with vinegar. I haven’t figured how to make them heat resistant because while I was researching that I got distracted by the choice of music. Naturally being a ponce it can’t just be any old Christmas carol (I need one with pedigree obviously) or any old sheet music, (original manuscript preferably or an archaic arrangement for a medieval instrument that has since fallen out of use).
While browsing the British library site I found the handwritten original of Handel’s Messiah, complete with crossings out and salacious margin notes. But I don’t think I’ll be able to create a print large enough for a place mat but now nothing else will do. And while I associate the Messiah with Christmas because there are always performances then, my inner ponce is a little sniffy about it actually being Easter music. If I could have just stopped thinking at “sheet music place mats” I’d have them made by now.
