Any Ponces Around?

My mincemeat is melting in the slow cooker atm, and it made me feel nostalgic for the Poncetastic thread. I've had a search, but can't see it.

I'm happy if someone else wants to start it, or this could be it!

Most of my poncing is kitchen based, although I'm planning to make seashell angels this year too, and maybe do something fiddly with acorns.

Also, I'm going to attempt to knit some presents.

Anyone out there? I'm poncing off now, but will check in later.

Thanks @Alanamackree

Have any of you ponced with crab apples in a chutney or anything? There’s lots of recipies on pinterest but just wanted to know if the final taste would be worth the effort! We’ve loads of apples every year which go to waste

Wilhemenawonka · 21/09/2018 18:26

I have a lot of grapes collected from the allotment today and want to make something for Christmas with them. They have tiny pips which could be a problem.
Am thinking chutney but any suggestions would be very welcome (not enough for wine sadly )

MissCherryCakeyBun · 21/09/2018 18:41

This looks yummy to make with grapes?

Years ago I made crab apple jelly and it was very nice. www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/7661/crab-apple-jelly

I don't have the recipe I use but this seems to be similar

livingthegoodlife · 21/09/2018 20:16

My favourite recipes for using up crab apples is a Rosemary Jelly - perfect with roast dinners!

I checked the Christmas topics every day for a week looking for this thread, then resigned myself to it not starting until the 24th of September (had in my head it was the first).

This is my third or fourth year following the thread- under a name change or two. We food ponce quite a bit, but I never get time for much more. I'm not too optimistic this year as DC3 is due the first week of January so we will probably scale back a little on decorations etc for fear of having a huge clear up to do when the baby arrives.

However tomorrow we are having a new extra freezer delivered and the food prep can begin! I am soooo sadly excited to make mince pies, sausage rolls, red cabbage and anything else I can think of in advance . What do you all fill the freezer with?

MissingMo · 21/09/2018 20:38

Congratulations @starryeyedsnowgirl

I'm excited for the poncing, my first proper Christmas at home as a family of me DP and DD. I've already started making prototype Christmas decorations from lovely Christmas fabrics I've bought. I'm trying to work out how to make flapjack christmassy as it's the only sweets DP eats.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 21/09/2018 20:59

How about these flapjacks?

Love a décor Ponce. This was last year's wreath. Bits from garden centre (sparkly) and friends garden, plus oranges I dried and snowberry cuttings from nearby. It was a decent effort.

I'm not a food poncer but I do make biscuits, fudge and cranberry and pear chutney for Christmas. It's as far as I get. Rest comes from supermarket 🤣

Hmm . Seeing as our apple tree basically dumped its entire harvest in the high winds, I now have about 60 odd kilos of cooking apples in my kitchen . I’m contemplating using some of it for Christmas food poncery ( or indeed any poncery that gets it out of my way ! ) but am sadly coming up short of ideas that aren’t chutney related . There’s only so much apple sauce I can make !

BiddyPop · 22/09/2018 09:12

If you have a freezer, you could peel and chop apples and gently stew them (not fully soft though, just to soften but still with some “body” to them) and freeze in 1 pue filling portions. Then make pastry and pies when it suits - and that could be a nice thing as presents - a freshly made pie (which could be frozen again as the filling has been baked in the pastry since defrosting).

Might not be terribly poncy, but that, chutney and apple jelly (apple & mint even?) are all I can think of for a glut.

RaininSummer · 22/09/2018 11:10

Hello poncers. Good to see us assembling and doing some good early poncing. Have started knitted stuff already and will build up to kitchen poncery and maybe a bannister garland this year as it has always been neglected. Have just written down some great ideas above and will try the microwave fudge and maybe the marmalade gin.

FlaviaAlbia · 22/09/2018 12:02

I froze the dropped ones after blanching them to stop them turning brown. I'll just put the straight into crumbles and pies.

CrazyBaubles · 22/09/2018 18:31

My pouncing tends to be present making as I'm not great in the kitchen.

Does crochet count as poncing? I hope so - I have finished a blanket for my nephew and am halfway through one for Dsis (at her request).

I really want to make my own wreath this year but can't see me having the time. I am definitely going to dry out slices of orange and use ribbon to add cinnamon sticks though, I've never done that before.

I also have a lot of Yankee candles with small amounts of winter scented wax left as the wick has burned away. Today I melted the wax and poured them into an once cube tray - I plan to turn them into a few small layered winter / Christmas candles - as some Christmas ponce purely for my own benefit.

I also want to make my own chutney but again, not sure about having the time...

dementedma · 22/09/2018 19:22

Where to get nice small bottles for Christmas vodka and gin? My bramble vodka is fab and I'm going to struggle to part with it

EyUpOurKid · 22/09/2018 20:59

demented have you a country baskets nearby? We always got jars and bottles from there. I think they do online. Might be worth a look.

whatareyoueatingNOW · 23/09/2018 16:20

Miss cherry- thanks for the grape jelly recipe- I made a batch today ready for Christmas 🎄😊

NoWordForFluffy · 23/09/2018 16:38

I've ordered two Scandi Christmas cross stitch kits. Not sure I've time to get both done before this Christmas, but I'll try!

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 23/09/2018 19:40

I have today sorted out my curly hazel and set it to dry out. I’m going to construct some sort of ceiling thing with fairy lights to dangle baubles/dried orange/similar from!

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 23/09/2018 19:40

What sauces go with beef? Wanting to make some myself but lacking inspiration as to what.

AlwaysPottering · 23/09/2018 20:52

Thanks for the crab apple ideas. I have rosemary growing so that one would be ideal.
Dementedma I get my bottles in Ikea for gin.
Undermajordormominor love your ceiling idea. I have curly willow in garden, I sprayed it white last year & had baubles on it to put in vases in rooms that didn’t have trees. (I decorate EVERY room)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/09/2018 12:38

Ooh me! I love a good festive ponce!

The dc were poorly this past weekend so we drew the curtains, lit the fire and I made Christmas cards all weekend! Glorious! I have 3 craft fairs to do this year, and I’m determined to use only stock I already have to do my crafting this year. Obviously not including the £11 I spent today

I’ve made prototypes of fig and walnut chutney, and chilli, lime and ginger jam, just one jar of each which we’ll sample at a birthday do for Dh this weekend, then may make more for Christmas.

I want to make a pudding this year and have seen a recipe for a black forest Christmas pud with kirsch, chocolate, and cherries. Oh my.

starryeyedsnowgirl · 24/09/2018 22:46

Mmm- that Black Forest cake sounds good. My mum always makes a chocolate roulade for Christ which she fills with whipped cream and cherry pie filling. It is yummy.

It's the 24th!!! Does that mean it is socially acceptable to ponce?

lottiegarbanzo · 24/09/2018 22:54

Wow, you learn something new every day! What's the etymology of your useage of 'ponce'? I understand ponce to equal pimp, in the traditional, living off the earnings of prostituted women sense. Shock
