I’m looking for ideas. What’s everyone doing?

Doesn't anyone just have cornflakes or toast?

Smoked salmon, a full buffet, champagne! Sometimes MN is like stepping into a thread done by the Royals. Confused

SequinsOnEverything · 29/11/2017 09:51

Cinnamon swirls and croissants

StillSmallVoice · 29/11/2017 09:52

There's trouble brewing this year. For the last five or six years we've had pancakes with bacon, maple syrup and a dollop of creme fraiche on top. After this length of time it has become a 'tradition' aka 'the rules'.

But this year DH is suggesting a change, possibly waffles or possibly American style biscuits which are basically scones. The suggestion for change is probably because my pancakes aren't as good as his DF's. (True - mine are rubbish and DFIL's are lovely). There will be some delicate diplomacy over the next couple of weeks, though it will all work out in the end and we will have a lovely breakfast involving bacon, maple syrup, creme fraiche and some sort of carb.

AJPTaylor · 29/11/2017 09:57

Nigella xmas muffins. Takes about 2 mins to mix and 15 to cook

MonumentalAlabaster · 29/11/2017 10:00

AJPTaylor I made those once (though not on Christmas Day) and they came our rather dry - did you find that?

YouCantBeSirius · 29/11/2017 10:03

We'll have bacon and egg sandwiches. I usually have a liquid breakfast but I'm pregnant so I'll eat my body weight in chocolate instead.

Battleax · 29/11/2017 10:06

Yes I'm okay, bit, thanks. I really don't know why this would be the one that upset me. I normally don't click them at all, just see the thread titles.

Ive seen some up close deprivation lately that I don't really see in my normal routine and thinking about Christmas generally, I guess. I don't know.

iklboo · 29/11/2017 10:17

Smoked salmon Benedict for me & DH, smoked salmon blinis with creme fraiche and fish egg roe cheap caviar for DS who has expensive tastes. Probably with Buck's Fizz.

CiderwithBuda · 29/11/2017 11:14

I don't think this thread is about excess or going overboard. Although I do agree that Christmas is becoming ridiculous in some ways. I think we are worse in the UK than the States. I was in Boston at the end of October and there wasn't much Christmas stuff in the shops whereas there was lots here already.

I think it's interesting to see what others do. As children we had some of our selection boxes in bed and then some toast and a cuppa if we wanted. There are some nice ideas on this thread and I think a nice breakfast on Christmas morning is a nice thing to do IF you and your family want it. But nobody needs feel they are under pressure. A cup of tea in your pjs opening presents beside the tree with some chocolate or a slice of toast can be just as much of a tradition as someone else's smoked salmon and champagne. We do a cooked breakfast mid morning as we don't eat Christmas dinner till late afternoon. But it's just a normal cooked breakfast. Same as we would do another day we would have a cooked breakfast. We don't have them often really.

LuckyAmy1986 · 29/11/2017 11:23

It's the OP here, thanks everyone for all the ideas, I didn't realise there would be so many variations!
Sorry to anyone offended but the thread title clearly states what this would be about! So if you knew you would be fed up with it then maybe don't come on I suppose.
And no I don't need 'help' I was just looking for ideas and curious as to what other people do. I don't see anything wrong AT ALL in wanting breakfast to be a little bit special or different on Christmas Day. That's literally all this is about. Absolutely nothing to do with excess. It's only myself, DH and 2 DC at home all day.

Oh and as PP said, absolutely nothing wrong with having your regular breakfast either, or none, whatever works for you and your family!

DeepPileTinsel · 29/11/2017 11:27

It's also nice hearing what other people have because it might be something different from what you normally have.

Eggs benedict is something that DH and I have semi-regularly, when we have no plans at the weekend and can spend the time on making it and having a nice, leisurely breakfast. Ditto pancakes.

In reality, there's every chance that DD will have her normal "banana and porridge", DS will have his "apple and weetabix/shreddies/cheerios" and I'll have coffee, fruit and some form of egg. DH will eat chocolate.

BiddyPop · 29/11/2017 11:38

I haven't even thought about that yet!

I know we'll probably be going to mass in the morning, so needing something relatively substantial. Especially as I have been muttering about a Christmas Day swim later (tides are not great - but it looks like it should be decent from about 12.30 onwards to get in). Although mass will have options of 10.30 am, noon, or 9pm ("midnight mass"!) on Christmas Eve. Hmm, I think I need to do some thinking around timings.

Anyway, we often have bacon butties, or make up jus-rol croissants in the oven. Although we've found M&S frozen raisin Danish to oven bake which work great too.

There will definitely be freshly squeezed juice - I love grapefruit but DH and DD go for orange.

And lots of hot coffee for DH and I.

DD will have sweets and fruit in her stocking that will help fill her up too.

I would love to plan some of the sumptuous breakfasts you see here and in food magazines and cookery programmes - but they never work out.

secondhoneymoon · 29/11/2017 11:38

We now have a full English and then Christmas dinner about 4ish.

Prior to that, we'd have our usual cereal then one or more of the following:

Bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon

Croissants filled with ham and cheese then baked til cheese melts

Sausage rolls!!!

Scrambled egg & smoked salmon

Cranberry & oat muffins

Panettone and stollen

LuckyAmy1986 · 29/11/2017 11:40

Christmas 2011, before I met DH, I spent the whole day, and Xmas Eve and Boxing Day, completely on my own and had a microwave ready meal (pasta carbonara!) in my bedsit. I had no oven, my tv signal didn't work so I had to watch dvd's instead. (The whole boxset of Sex and The City!) Not a card or present from anyone.

This isn't a sob story, I know there are millions of people in much, much worse situations than that. I just want to try and have nice Christmases from now on because I feel lucky I won't be on my own any more and can afford to have nice food and some presents (we are NOT rich but in a better situation that I was!)

If I want to have a big fancy breakfast with my little family, I will. We never have breakfast together as a family so I just thought it would be nice to do something different. I don't know why I am explaining myself. I feel quite annoyed right now! And...breathe.

Me porridge and fruit

Children their usual of scrambled eggs on
toast followed by fruit salad. Plus I will get them a mini pain au chocolate as a treat.

BiddyPop · 29/11/2017 11:41

(And it's not really one-upmanship, as both our parents houses involve a full Irish fry for Christmas Day breakfast - if anything, we are quite restrained).

I forgot to mention I usually have some fresh fruit chopped up as well, ready for DH and I to have something a little healthy.

theaveragewife · 29/11/2017 11:42

Pastries, fruit & champers!

CadburySpot · 29/11/2017 11:43

We let one of the DC pick what we have. So last year we all had pain au choclat. This year it is DS2's turn to pick and he has requested cinnamon buns.
So it will be cinnamon buns, Clementine juice, and milkshake.

LemonysSnicket · 29/11/2017 11:46

Another vote for smoked salmon, eggs and blinis with bucks fizz!

Bumbumtaloo · 29/11/2017 11:54

We always go to my mums for Christmas morning breakfast and have pigs in blankets, scrambled egg, toast and beans. It’s one of my favourite parts of Christmas Day.

Monkeybunkey · 29/11/2017 11:56

Last year I had Quality Street washed down with a can of lager. Proper classy in my house!

BroomstickOfLove · 29/11/2017 12:13

Normally we have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, but after last year's hideous experience of a child with impacted constipation over the New Year's weekend, I'm tempted to go for some sort of fruit salad instead.

I'm very impressed with all the people making eggs Benedict. I only ever have it when eating out because the stress of poaching eggs for lots of people and making hollandaise first thing in the morning is more than I can handle. And I need to buy a new pyrex bowl before I can make hollandaise anyway because I dropped my old one and the replacement doesn't fit in my saucepan.

Juanbablo · 29/11/2017 12:32

We always have bacon rolls, cinnamon swirls, fruit, tea and Buck's Fizz. This is about 8am and lunch about 2.

RockyRoadster · 29/11/2017 15:30

Another one who has pork pie with pickles/chutney 😊
