So. Really good presents for men that are NOT...

Hip flasks (why do magazines think men want endless hip flasks?)
Books about gin (look, gin is all very well, but who wants to READ about it?!!)
Scarves, gloves, hats (as I've done these items many times over)
Toiletry sets they won't use
Novelty games, puzzles etc.

I have some very lovely men in my life (BILs, boyfriends of much-loved nieces) and I don't want to burden them with stuff they don't need or want, but I don't know them well enough to say, choose a book for them.

What presents in the £15-20 range can you get for men that are genuinely useful and not gimmicky or purely decorative (as I don't know many men who genuinely want decorative stuff...)?

All ideas received with interest and thanks!

Love the idea of home baked goodies plus an Amazon voucher.

expotition · 18/11/2017 19:11

Ordnance Survey map centred on his house with photo of his house on cover went down well.

MadameJosephine · 18/11/2017 19:17

I’ve just bought my brother this book, reduced to £10 at the moment. I’m quite looking forward to having a look at it myself

I have been sent a catalogue for qwerkity in one of my online orders and they have some good gift ideas. I have never ordered so cant vouch for them but think some of their gift ideas are unique

Have just taken delivery of Woolovers.

Gosh the quality. I was expecting them to be really thin but they're heavy, lined yoke, neat collar and cuffs, strong colours.

I chose two plain and two "twist". Slightly prefer the plain but the twist will suit the recipients.

MrsHathaway · 19/11/2017 12:37

Oops, posted too soon.

I'd say they appear to be worth their full price, let alone the £5 offer price.

I went for the cheapest delivery option which was Hermes to my corner shop. I ordered this week and got a text yesterday to say the shop had them. Fast and painless. Recommend!

Girlsworld92 · 19/11/2017 13:11

I might order some of the jumpers too. Thanks mrshathaway

NeverNic · 20/11/2017 10:25

What are the sizes like at Woolovers? Are they true to size? Might look at getting 4 in the promotion

Girlsworld92 · 20/11/2017 10:52

A review I read said they are slightly large but I’ve ordered the normal size they wear so it can be layered

MrsHathaway · 20/11/2017 11:52

Based on the ones I've received, I'd say they're generous but not massive. I ordered their usual sizes and am happy with the sizing.

Maybe if they're borderline on sizing then choose the smaller size (eg M/L choose M).

NeverNic · 20/11/2017 12:07

Brilliant, thank you. I think I might go smaller then as OH has exactly that issue.

twinkledag · 20/11/2017 12:12

My DH loved -

Subscription to Private Eye magazine
l’occitane smellies
Star Wars novelty bottle opener
Portable phone charger

twinkledag · 20/11/2017 12:14

Oh and a cinema voucher to go and watch the new Star Wars film!

FilledSoda · 20/11/2017 12:55

Thank you everyone, I have a list !

FlouncyDoves · 20/11/2017 18:33

I get my dad Private Eye on a rolling yearly sub for his birthday. It’s ideal. He loves it and I don’t ever have to think what I should get him.

If only there was another monthly mag he was interested in for Xmas.

LeNil · 20/11/2017 19:08

Small presents I’ve bought for Dh and Dbros
Powerful torch, portable power bank, decent knife, bop it game, bottles of wine, good coffee beans, le crueset espresso cups, warm socks, mushrooming book, posh soap, pate, Cognac and a cabin bag.

Dh is very difficult to buy for. One year I bought him 100 different massage cards, some oil, and the promise to fulfill the massages when he played a card!

AutumnalLeaves38 · 20/11/2017 19:38

FlouncyDoves,

Anyone who's a Private Eye fan would enjoy Nick Newman's official history of (50 yrs of) its cartoons. Though was published in 2013, so perhaps your Dad's already got it?

£25 site price, if you do it by the book (ha!)...
(but £18ish if you Amazon it).

Trills · 20/11/2017 19:42

I've bought a present for my dad and one for a (female) friend from this thread.

Magazine subscriptions are often a good bet, I find.

I back up the idea that the best gift is something that if you saw it yourself you would like it but think "I don't know if I should spend that money on myself".

ImListening · 21/11/2017 19:26

Great ideas. Got dh an Alexa dot.

Anyone know of a decent wine preserver - the Coravin is way way to expensive!

FlouncyDoves · 21/11/2017 22:15

Thanks. Good tip

CurbsideProphet · 22/11/2017 22:27

I haven't even read the whole thread and already found some brilliant suggestions for my DP, thank you all Smile

BeastOfCraggyIsland · 22/11/2017 23:21

We're going to Iceland in February so that's our main 'gift' to each other. Trips or gig/comedy tickets usually go down well.

DP doesn't really go in for lots of/expensive gifts at Christmas and isn't easy to buy for but sadly for him I love Christmas and buying presents 😁 So far I've got him a Private Eye subscription, the Star Wars edition of one of his favourite board games (Carcassonne) and a magnetic hourglass thing which he'll love. I've also just ordered one of the framed Milky Way prints from the suggestion above and 2 Woolovers jumpers, one for him and one for DStepDad. I think just some nice chocolate and maybe some socks and I'm done for DP. I like the Grid It but not sure if he'd use it... I might get one for me though Grin
