So. Really good presents for men that are NOT...

Hip flasks (why do magazines think men want endless hip flasks?)
Books about gin (look, gin is all very well, but who wants to READ about it?!!)
Scarves, gloves, hats (as I've done these items many times over)
Toiletry sets they won't use
Novelty games, puzzles etc.

I have some very lovely men in my life (BILs, boyfriends of much-loved nieces) and I don't want to burden them with stuff they don't need or want, but I don't know them well enough to say, choose a book for them.

What presents in the £15-20 range can you get for men that are genuinely useful and not gimmicky or purely decorative (as I don't know many men who genuinely want decorative stuff...)?

All ideas received with interest and thanks!

justchillaxing How about ballroom dancing cufflinks these are £21.99 but I'm sure you could find some cheaper if you wanted, he could wear them on this smart shirts for dancing.

So. Really good presents for men that are NOT...
Justchillaxing · 14/11/2017 15:54

Great ideas! Thanks. I like the cufflinks .. not sure if he wears them but he's so difficult to buy for, Im clutching at straws.

chicaguapa · 14/11/2017 22:15

These aren't particularly in the price range of the OP, but there are some good ideas here, some of which have already been mentioned on this thread.

2017 Christmas gift guide for dads

I love the idea of the woodland survival weekend. It's reminded me that one of DH's favourite presents was this Fire starter stick currently £15.

building2017 · 14/11/2017 22:21

Oh, yes, my brother absolutely LOVES anything to do with prepping for disaster. Or the zombie apocalypse. So stuff like a life straw, or a few weird emergency medical supplies that wouldn't normally be in a first aid kit, or an survival blanket.... He's a bit weird.

shhhfastasleep · 15/11/2017 06:17

Survival blanket is Poundland sort of thing. Don’t bother. Life straw is nearer £20.
There’s a prepper topic on here and I’m pretty sure the contributors are not shit kicking gun/camo obsessed rednecks.
But I digress. Cuff links sounds like a brilliant idea.

Fightthebear · 15/11/2017 07:41

Sorry, bookmarking. Some great ideas.

building2017 · 15/11/2017 08:58

The preppers topic here is good for ideas.

Since he is my brother I can get away with a £1 survival blanket along with random £1 disposable boiler suit (so the BRAINS don't get on your clothes) and £5 notebook you can write on in the rain ... along with more sensible/significant presents. Probably not your go-to solution for 'so-and-so from work's husband'.

DubiousCredentials · 15/11/2017 11:58

For anyone wanting more traditional gifts, Woolovers are doing two jumpers for £10 (plus postage). Normally £25-29 each. Not in the spirit of this thread I know but thought it worth a mention.

MrsHathaway · 15/11/2017 14:29

That Woolovers link is fantastic!! DH gets too hot in a big jumper but needs more than one layer in cold weather, so cotton crew neck is perfect.

Tempted to get four ...

MrsHathaway · 15/11/2017 14:35

Update: I checked the reviews, then ordered four. Three difficult people sorted (two for difficult DH).

handbagdoctor · 15/11/2017 15:43

Justchillaxing how about tickets for the Strictly live tour?

RichardHead · 15/11/2017 16:01

This thread is ace!

DH is getting a print of his home town for his birthday next month;
In laws are getting a personalised OS map of their favourite holiday village;
BIL is getting a grid and a money holder keyring

Yay sorted Smile

Justchillaxing · 15/11/2017 16:20

Handbag great idea - but it's not coming close enough for them to go Sad

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/11/2017 16:20

cheeseposties.com/how-it-works#prettyPhoto/0/

My boyfriend is getting a subscription to a make your own cheese toastie for a couple of months as A) he loves cheese toasties and B) He’s incredibly difficult to buy for...

Strokethefurrywall · 15/11/2017 17:58

I'm really pleased with what I got for DH! Thanks to this thread, yesterday I got him online on Iwantoneofthose.com:

  • Become a Laird (DH Scottish, now he gets to be a Laird, he'll be thrilled This means I also become a Lady...)
  • Harry Potter t-shirt
  • Harry Potter mug
  • Bottle cap launcher

And today, I got the piece de resistance... a personalised whiskey barrel decanter from etsy.com

Thank you all, couldn't have done it without your brains. There's fuck all to buy here (Caribbean island) so you have all saved my brain power of thinking what I can get him!

theredjellybean · 15/11/2017 19:29

Cheese postie... Fabulous, bloody marvellous, brother and dexh getting this..

shhhfastasleep · 15/11/2017 19:39

Cheese postie looks ridiculously awesome. I want one.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/11/2017 21:14

It’s a ludicrously expensive way of basically making a cheese sammich but it looks so ridiculous I couldn’t resist it!

AutumnalLeaves38 · 15/11/2017 21:19

LadyOfTheCanyon,
You are brilliant! Thanks so much. Have finally sorted out my brother's present with a 3 month CheesePosties subscription.Even he will have to admit it's original (and I love the fact a hungry kid will get 3 free meals too).

Taytocrisps · 15/11/2017 21:44

I got some great suggestions for DH in this thread last year but I'm a bit stumped this year. He loves gadgets but tends to go out and buy them for himself.

Anyway, here's some things I've bought in recent years which went down well.

Character pyjamas - Star Wars one year and Marvel cartoon characters another year

Star Wars washbag

Woolly hat

Mini Blockbusters game

Nightmare before Christmas decoration

So far this year I've bought some fancy cocktail spoons - the handles have mini cocktails on them. And that's it.......

The best man present I ever got was for my teenage nephew. It was a laser game with two headsets and two guns. I had to buy about 20 batteries for it but it was a huge hit with my nephew and his Dad Grin. I was the coolest aunt ever that year.

AnonEvent · 15/11/2017 22:10

Things I’ve got DH over the years;

Perfume (manfume) - things like Acqua do Parma Intensia.

Black sheepskin slippers from Celtic and Co.

Dressing gown.

Cashmere blend socks (he was jealous of mine).

Hugo Boss tie.

Bluetooth speaker.

A proper old fashioned nightshirt (like Wee Willie Winkie).

Liberty print shirt.

Various jumpers (usually v-neck, usually cashmere/lamb’s wool blend).

Clothes, assorted.

Books, assorted.

Records, assorted.

Work bag.

Monogrammed wallet.

Monogrammed travel card holder.

Espresso cups.

AnonEvent · 15/11/2017 22:14

Shiiit, I completely missed the budget bit. I was too excited to write a list of pressies. Sorry!

Redken24 · 15/11/2017 22:24

These ideas are just perfect

CoolCarrie · 15/11/2017 23:32

The lovely thing about the cheese posties is the support they give to Mary's Meals, a charity which gives free school meals to children living in poverty all over the world.

trinitybleu · 16/11/2017 07:08

Thanks to this thread, OH is thrilled with his birthday Form Cards. Wallet Ninja on order for Christmas....
