Have you started working on any crafts in preparation for Christmas? Or got plans to? Would love to hear about other people's plans and projects, feel free to share here whatever you're working on or anything really to do with Christmas crafting.

I'm currently looking around for ideas/patterns for...
Advent calendars
Stockings
Simple-to-make gifts in general

oh maybe I've cracked it! Although this looks such a mess. First knitted thing ever though! the colour changing is awful though. Maybe I should make plain ones. But the little intarsia pictures are part of the fun of it!

I've started crocheting as a hobby and been collecting yarn so I'm making throws for couples in the family and including some chocs/dvd for a cosy night in.

Hello! Sorry to be an infrequent visitor, it is DS's birthday this week so I have been putting my creative efforts into The Cake.

The first two rows are okay as long as you can knit and purl (which you must be able to do if you can do stocking stitch). The little ribs come from alternating knit and purl between stitches, and also between rows, so that the 'v' shapes are stacked above each other, and the loopy rough bits are too. That makes the nice vertical lines. To knit a stitch, and then purl a stitch, you just bring the wool between the needles between each stitch, so that it is on the side you need. For the first two rows you have to do that between each and every stitch. If the last stitch of the row was a knit, it will be a purl when you start the next row so that you have the same 'look' of the stitch in the vertical column. That probably doesn't make any sense at all, it would be so easy to show you in person. Don't suppose you are near London?! I reckon a knitting group would show you in 5 mins, or look up rib stitch on YouTube.

As for the extra stitches, you must either be looping the yarn over the needle extra times (maybe when going from knit to purl) or not dropping the 'old' loop properly when completing a stitch. I would advise looking at some videos of rib stitch because it will make sure you are not looping over the needles between stitches... And as for the other possibility, you just need to check you have slid the old stitch off the needle properly each time.

It will be very fiddly at first but will get easier, I promise! Handling different yarns to make patterns with colours is more of a challenge, I hadn't done that before but learned through doing this. The technique is called intarsia and I figured it out with the help of Google. My first couple of attempts were a bit messy on the back and I also pulled the yarn a bit tight so the front puckered a bit, but I've got the hang of it now.

Poncetastic thread starts soon. I may join in this year but will probably NC as will be completely obvious to anyone who knows me! Might see a few people from here on it!

That's weird, I refreshed before posting but the last couple of messages didn't pop up until afterwards!

Looks brilliant Lady C. There'll be no stopping you now! like I said, my first intarsia were a bit messy but I am pretty neat at it now, it will only take a couple of hoes. I find with patterns with large chunks of colour it is better to have lots of little balls and twist them in at the colour change, rather than carry the yarn too far over the back (especially if the colour contrast is strong as it can show through). But it's all a matter of preference.

I love that nightdress.

I've been busy sewing Barbie-sized pyjamas and mattresses, and making Barbie furniture, all for DD.

I can't quite seem to settle on a final design and colour scheme for the presents sacks, so need to get a move on and order the fabric really. They won't take long to actually make I hope

BoboBunnyH0p · 22/09/2016 22:48

My plans include making mini Christmas cakes to give as gifts and I will also make shortbread for gifts.
We have recently just lost our wonderful Nannie so will be using a piece of her tarten clothing to create some quilted baubles for each of her great grandchildren.

eitak22 · 22/09/2016 22:51

My main plan is to make cross stitch cards for lots of people as finding it a good way to relax. Want to make some Christmas bunting too, might try some fudge/truffles as well.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 23/09/2016 17:30

This year I'm planning to make Christmas PJ's for DD and possibly matching ones for DH and myself.

I might make a few other things with the sewing machine. Add some strips of Christmas fabric to hand towels etc.

I'm also planning making personalised candles for relatives (images / text melted into the wax). It's fairly easy to do but a bit of a faff on the computer beforehand as my new printer doesn't have a reverse image print option.

Bambooshoots14 · 25/09/2016 11:24

Just saw this on FB, going to make a few with ds for the tree

LadyChatterley could you please point me in the direction of the pattern you used for the mistletoe on your wreath? I'm really struggling to find one I can make any headway with! Blush

LadySilvia · 28/09/2016 21:32

I'm going to do these for all the kids in the family: great for Christmas Eve boxes or stockings.

Christmas Eve Boxes
Homemade Lush inspired toiletries for Christmas Eve Pamper Hampers
Santa's milk bottles
Santa's cookie in a jar mix
Santa's magic key

I've got my gin steeping, my soap making stuff has almost all arrived, i am going to make gingerbread syrup again. I have bought a red fleece throw from IKEA and i am going to try and use my new (to me) embroidery machine to make throws for people. The throws cost £3 so just water soluble stabiliser and thread on top.

Wenchelda · 29/09/2016 16:46

I've scanned the thread and am not nearly as crafty as most of you but I did make this snowman wreath last year that I was very pleased with .....

Mummyshortlegz · 29/09/2016 17:21

That's really effective! The kids could help (watch) men make that.

Wondermoomin · 29/09/2016 18:40

I still haven't properly got started - I'm being stalled by my indecision! I did get some wool and knitting needles out last night to practice as it's been ages since I knitted... Came downstairs this morning to find that the kitten who has joined our family since I last knitted had spread the wool out between 3 rooms..! So that was nice... HmmGrin

Following! Lots of talented people on here. Is there a thread about Christmas craft ideas to do with children?

Dolphintrainer · 03/10/2016 17:52

I am a knitter and knit all kinds of things, lots as gifts. I tried crochet a couple of times but didn't persevere..... until seeing the earlier posts on this thread for the lovely Christmas wreaths. So I decided to try to learn crochet again and here is the result. I am so pleased. Thank you ladies for your inspiration!

Thats pretty Carrotvan

My other xmas project is a Harry potter themed advent calendar. Bought a plain one in Hobbeycraft to paint/decoupage. Dd 19 wants to help

CarrotVan · 04/10/2016 19:47

Just found last year's spare stocking - Sod's law in action.

Still this one is far better sewn

luckiestgirl · 19/10/2016 11:45

I've just bought 1kg of Shea butter, 1kg of cocoa butter, 500ml almond oil, 500ml coconut oil and I'm eying up some nice glass containers.

I'm making 18 pots of whipped body butter for adult females Christmas presents. I'm debating whether to add essential oils but I think it might smell lovely without.

Imnotacelebgetmeouttahere · 19/10/2016 11:53

I made a Xmas table Blush we only have a room for a coffee table < with chairs for kids > so we made a top that makes it large enough for us to all sit round on Xmas day Grin
