Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control Blush - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it Wink).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

Trying to resist the temptation to add more Hmm

Sorry, forgot to say we have Dobble and Uno!

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 16:00

Ah well you obviously have great taste then! :o

Well I bought Lords of Waterdeep on the Amazon offer - 30% off when you spend over £30 but couldn't get the discount to work. They did agree to the discount after I spoke to them on the phone but it took so long I began to wish I'd paid the extra and ordered it from a game shop!

Thank you for the recommendation!

I resisted Game of Thrones after reading it takes 5 hours to play

Toffeelatteplease · 11/12/2015 19:00

I gave away my version of game of thrones.....

It is an incredible game but like the books it is all about the alliances you make and, if you want to win, when you decide to break them. This really does not make for harmonious relationships if playing with a partner or another couple.....

Toffeelatteplease · 11/12/2015 19:03

Dancergirl: I'm thinking Fo

Toffeelatteplease · 11/12/2015 19:08

Whoops Blush

I was thinking forbidden island as that is cooperative but that only plays four. Tbh I think you would struggle with many options to fit both the 8 year old who doesn't often get games and 5 players. I can't think of games that fit one or the other criteria but not both...

Sushi go is good like that. Story cubes perhaps...

Don't forget YouTube videos can be a fantastic way to learn new games

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 22:16

Flash Point is a cooperative game and it says up to 6 players on Amazon. It's 10+ but TBH I don't think age ratings are as relevant with coops - since you're helping each other decide what to do anyway, your DC would have plenty of help. It's about fire rescue - you have to save people/animals from a burning building before the building collapses (which is represented by 'damage cubes')

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 22:17

I think it's much simpler to play with children than Pandemic, BTW

Wolfcub · 11/12/2015 23:17

We've played flashpoint with dad when he was 7. It is definitely possible.

Chillywhippet · 12/12/2015 00:03

Thanks Toffeelatte. Sounds like Game of Thrones may be a good birthday present for DD to take to her group rather than a family Christmas present for bonding time!

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 12/12/2015 10:26

I think Forbidden Desert goes up to 5 players but I could be wrong.

fuzzpig · 12/12/2015 13:31

think I'm twitching on batman story cubes

OP posts:
fuzzpig · 12/12/2015 13:32

(which OBVIOUSLY means I'd need to even it up with something for DD... dice game anyone?)

OP posts:
fuzzpig · 12/12/2015 13:45

Anyone played Tantrix? DD has mentioned them as I think a friend has one of the little sets of 10 tiles. But wondering if the proper game set is more worthwhile?

Searched town today for Monopoly deal & cleudo card game too but couldn't find either 😧 Has anyone seen them in shift street shop?

NowBringUsSomeFuzzpiggyPudding · 12/12/2015 18:00

My local WHSmith have the small card versions of lots of games like this Cluedo - the one I got (Boggle Slam) seems to have some app-related gumf on there so the cards aren't quite the same as the original though

NowBringUsSomeFuzzpiggyPudding · 12/12/2015 18:01

BBT Cluedo arrived today by the way :o Don't think we'll have time to play tomorrow though as we've got heaps to do. But DSD (fellow BBT fan) is staying on Monday so we might get to try it then.

NowBringUsSomeFuzzpiggyPudding · 12/12/2015 19:57

OOOOOH this version of Cluedo has rules for a two-player version, player power cards and chance cards too. Interesting!

pickledonion2 · 14/12/2015 08:06

so... now youngest dc is 7 and capable of concentrating for about 30 seconds at a time it seems game playing is more of an option for us this year!
Our Christmas elves brought dc Christmas-opoly which they are actually all loving (slightly to my surprise!) and have spent hours playing it with minimal arguing!
So...we are getting some more games this year.
My 10 yr old neice has also asked for a board game. This thread has been a great help!
so...for dneice I'm getting Carcassonne (needed to be a game she could play with her cousins but could also play as a 2 as my dsis is divorced so just her and dneice at home) and pictureaka.
and also Jaipur as looks a good card game for 2 people.

for my lot they have each got a card game for their stockings - I've got : sleeping queens, monster cafe, grubs, love letters and Coup
Then I have got : The game of life, Settlers of Catan and Exploding kittens . DD1 has also got the hunger games game due to hunger games obsession! I'm trying to cater to a wide range of ages!

also really like the look of dixit...and many others but must not buy more!!

NowBringUsSomeFuzzpiggyPudding · 14/12/2015 08:45

Ooh, please let us know how the hunger games one turns out! My DSD is obsessed too. Would be good as long as you don't need loads of knowledge of the stories (as nobody else in the family knows as much as she does about it!)

I started wrapping stocking fillers last night and they're bulkier than I thought - think I'll have to give sleeping queens/super tooth as regular presents instead!

NowBringUsSomeFuzzpiggyPudding · 14/12/2015 15:26

Card games for DCs arrived today :) they look gorgeous! I'm not putting them in the stockings as I don't think they'll fit easily (plus they are getting a lot of cool stuff in their stockings this year and it's starting to look like mummy and daddy (as opposed to father christmas) haven't actually got them much at all [santa]

BuildersBum · 18/12/2015 12:08

I have a 6.5 year old and we discovered Haba games earlier this year, we've all fallen a bit in love with them. They are a welcome relief after the repetitiveness of Orchard Toys.

I've been buying more & stashing for Xmas since, along with other bargain games along the way. I don't really view these as 'presents', more tools to spend quality time together / fill days when the weather is bad without driving me potty.

Dinosaur Discovery
Super Rhino
Orinoco Gold
Shiverstone Castle
Hunt For Dinos
Monza
Brandon The Brave
Klecks Van Mouse
Guess Who Extra
Animal Safari
Classic Card Games
Bugs in the Kitchen
Angry Birds Cards
Ivor the Engine

Thanks to this thread . .. . .

I've also bought Labyrinth, decided on the main version not the junior.

Then twitched on Sushi Go last week, as she's getting toy play food sushi & I like to link things up.

Finally caved on Ticket to Ride last night when it dropped below £30 on Prime, not in stock til boxing day, but it's more for OH & I. Really looking forward to playing this.

I'm still hankering after Forbidden Island, as I think a collaborative game would be a useful addition to the collection. I've found out there's a real life Table Top game shop in the same town we're visiting Santa in next week, so hoping to purchase it then and play on Xmas eve.

Oh, & the Elf brought Letters To Santa. We are LOVING it and I'm going to have to get one of the regular themes ASAP, as we're definitely going to miss it when the Xmas stuff disappears.

I'm lusting after Takenoko, and resisted when it was less then £24 and now repeatedly kicking myself since it's not been below £30 since. Something to look forward to in the future, I guess.

Thanks for all your inspiration and helping me spend more Xmas Grin

I agree! Xmas Grin

NowBringUsSomeFuzzpiggyPudding · 18/12/2015 13:03

Sooo now my Christmas shopping is all done I can write my list too.

DD (8)
Monster High Top Trumps (yaaaaaay Xmas Hmm but thankfully the DCs usually play TT on their own)
Sleeping Queens
Tantrix (the big game pack - it's the little set of 10 tiles that she's played with elsewhere, but I figured we may as well get a big set)

DS (6)
Retro Transformers Top Trumps
Super Tooth
Batman Story Cubes

Family presents
Bounce Off (more for the DCs really as it's what they reeeally wanted but it does actually look quite fun)
Castle Panic

DSCs
Cards Against Humanity expansion
Batman Love Letter
The London Game

Doesn't actually seem so much now Xmas Wink but then, we have also had new games in for my birthday the other week (King of Tokyo, Sushi Go and the as-yet-unplayed BBT Cluedo) :)

What a great way of putting it Xmas Grin and so right!

I held Ticket to Ride in my hands £26 in H of Fraser last week. I put it back and am kicking myself.

Desperately wanting to twitch on rat a tat cat and or Jaipur...
