Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control Blush - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it Wink).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

Trying to resist the temptation to add more Hmm

Dixit and 7 wonders have arrived, I am impressed by all the awards 7 wonders has won!

Dixit looks beautiful.

Dancergirl · 09/12/2015 11:40

Has anyone played the hare and the tortoise?

fuzzpig · 09/12/2015 15:21

One of my colleagues heartily recommended the Hare and the Tortoise, and said it was quite an old game. There's a few versions knocking around though, so I'm not actually sure which one she was referring to!

DSS is visiting tonight, I'm not sure how long he's able to stay but I really hope it's long enough to play King of Tokyo - I know he will love it!

im interested in getting exploding kittens for my DS (14) however not sure if I should get the explicit version or family friendly version. What is considered explicit in the game? if anyone has it. My son is fairly mature so swear words and the odd sexual content won't be shocking to him.

EvaJacobs1 · 09/12/2015 18:23

Mine have the Pie Face game, Don't take Buster's bones, the Logo board game, Monopoly Junior and Trivial Pursuit family edition. Should be enough to keep us entertained throughout Christmas.

Dancergirl · 09/12/2015 19:37

I've read this thread over and over and still can't decide!

Our current favourite family game is Set card game. One thing I love about it is it's so easy to learn with no complicated rules.

I have been considering Hanabi, Sushi Go and Rat a Tat Cat but are these easy to learn?

Chillywhippet · 09/12/2015 20:37

Fuzzpig I think Labyrinth is better for younger children as it allows for a bit of randomness with the tiles sliding and you can help.

Quoridor is a real "I win - you lose" game. On each turn you have a choice of moving your pawn or placing a wall to block your opponent. It's really head to head and one player can get a long way behind if they have to go around a big block.

So it depends on the personalities. Will they enjoy working on good tactics and be philosophical about being thrashed? Will you?

mumma24 · 10/12/2015 11:02

Great thread 😄 I'm looking for simple card games to play that are fun and suitable for over 12's. Any ideas

mumma24 · 10/12/2015 11:05

We have at tiny boxed card game called snowballs, we had so much fun playing it, you have to be quick to grab snowballs (screwed up bits of paper) off the table.

vikjul · 10/12/2015 11:40

Back again to ask if anyone has good recommendations for 2-player games?

We have and adore Jaipur, and also like Battleline, Splendor and Biblios.

Considering one of the following but not sure which? Any experience of these?

Agricola:All Creatures Big and Small - simple and elegant or too complex scoring?
Morels (renamed to Fungi) - set collection, looks fun but fiddly?
Patchwork - gets brilliant reviews but perhaps you need to like puzzles?

vikjul · 10/12/2015 11:51

Oh, and Guildhall - anyone have that? Sounds like a fun combination of set collection and take that?

(We are getting burnt out on Monopoly Deal and need a fun and addictive replacement!)

fuzzpig · 10/12/2015 15:09

Will they enjoy working on good tactics and be philosophical about being thrashed? Will you?

:o Well I will be but I'm not sure I could say the same for DH...

Dancer Sushi Go is really really quick to learn. When I first read the rules, I thought oh dear this is going to be confusing (you could possibly take out all the chopsticks cards for the first few games) but actually it's really fine. My DS is 6, and has issues with communication, but he still managed to explain it all to DH really easily when he got home, so that was a big plus for me!

I LOVE Set, but nobody will play it with me because I'm too quick! My DCs don't really get it yet (although TBF they have only tried once). Sometimes I play it by myself, just going through the pack until I run out of options :o geeky and proud, me...

Ooh, Just a heads up that Amazon are doing another 30% off when you spend £30 on selected games tomorrow - looks like there are some good ones in there. www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=sr_aj?node=8880871031&ajr=0

Other than Amazon can anyone recommend an online board game shop? Thank you.

CakeNinja · 10/12/2015 18:38

Oh god, I groan when the dc suggest bored (see what i did there?!), they have a few but I can't get excited about them.
I see they are still very popular with so many people which is really nice. I just hate playing them myself!

fuzzpig · 10/12/2015 20:26

Somehow I've managed to resist twitching on that offer, blue (could've quite easily gone for Ingenious and Rummikub dice...)

Cake perhaps you haven't found the right game yet Xmas Wink there are a lot of crap games out there unfortunately!

Dancergirl · 10/12/2015 23:18

Thanks fuzzpig might well give Sushi Go a try. I just can't bear games when you have to be constantly referring to the instruction book!

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 08:46

Same! Definitely not needed with Sushi Go, apart from the first couple of times to check scoring rules. They're easy to remember though (and have already had a good impact on my DCs' maths skills :o mwahaha)

CakeNinja · 11/12/2015 09:09

Fuzz, I can live with it having found the right game!
Someone bought the Dc ticket to ride recently, I wanted to bleach my face off every time they suggested a family game.
I can play Monotony for an hour at most, a quick round of battleships, labyrinth? No thanks!
I think I'm just not into games.

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 10:11

Ah well wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same things!

I can't stand Monopoly (Monotony!) either. Which is a shame, as we have a lovely limited edition set of it, but have never played it Blush poor DH!

Labyrinth is on lightning deals yet again at 7.30 tonight if anyone is still looking for it.

OP posts:
fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 11:36

Big Bang Theory Cluedo £17.99 on lightning deals now. I might just rename myself Twitchy McTwitch.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 11/12/2015 14:52

I am still pondering Jaipur and rat a tat cat and ticket to ride, if anyone sees them on deals!

Wolfcub · 11/12/2015 15:30

Pandemic is 17.99 on Amazon for a short time. Fab game for grown ups and older children

Dancergirl · 11/12/2015 15:43

Right, I now have Sushi Go in my Amazon basket. What else can/should I buy that meets my criteria:

Can play with 5 players
Not too complicated for 8 year old who often doesn't 'get' games
Not too long to play
Not too complicated full stop!

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 15:53

Oooh I'm being strong and resisting Pandemic! That's a great price though. I'm only really able to keep strong because my best mate has it so I can play hers :o

Do you have Uno, Dancer? I was going to suggest Labyrinth or Indigo but they are both 4 player. Bananagrams is a good word game and no complicated scoring.

Sleeping Queens and Super Tooth have been posted. Yay!

fuzzpig · 11/12/2015 15:53

Oh and Dobble, gotta have Dobble Dancer
