Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control Blush - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it Wink).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

Trying to resist the temptation to add more Hmm

OP Sleeping Q is a lovely game with enough for adult to enjoy, I think you made good choice.

I am also torn over Rat a Tat...

fuzzpig · 07/12/2015 10:04

I'm really excited! I think they'll love getting proper card games in their stockings. They always get Top Trumps (well, it's become a tradition over the last few years since they've been old enough to play) but I'm really hoping we will have lots of chances to play loads of games on the day this year.

Christmas in the past has been a bit like celebrating 'round' my parents rather than 'with' them IYSWIM? They don't really play games much (I have vivid memories of playing board games by myself as a kid :o) but they are finally starting to 'get it'. I've given them our spare copies of a couple of games we ended up with, and they are normally happy to play Uno when we visit now. I've warned them I'm taking Sushi Go when we stay at Christmas, hopefully as it's really simple they'll be happy to play. But, since mum's flat is bigger than our house, at least we will have space to play even if they don't join in.

I really really look forward to our second Christmas each year - that's the time we have with my DSCs, who always spend the day itself with their mum. They are late teens/adults now and we always play lots of games, do a quiz etc. In many ways I prefer it to the 25th. DSS' GF comes too and loves playing games with us as her family aren't really into them. One time when we had a game night we had all 8 of us round our tiny dining table playing Dobble. It was the loudest and most violent our house has ever been :o

It's my birthday today, and DS got me a set of those Rory's Story Cubes - the MOOMIN edition! :o

Happy birthday Fuzz. Enjoy Moomins Grin

I also find playing games helps with conversation although its the bores who usually dont want to play and its them that really need too Hmm

I read parents who play board games with their dc have ten times stronger bonds to them.

I am excited too cant wait!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 07/12/2015 11:19

I have two guests coming, one in particular says he doesn't like games as it taxes his brain and he words really hard so wants a break but really I feel he is scared of putting his mental prowess on show and is scared of loosing Grin

fuzzpig · 07/12/2015 11:41

Aww, that's really sweet - I can see why that is true.

What about a cooperative game for your guests?

And thank you BTW :o I was amazed, DS started telling a story with them (he's got a speech disorder and doesn't usually do that sort of thing). We've had the original set in the cupboard for ages unused, I'll dig them out now :)

Am about to order Dominion for DH, just wondering though - is it too 'cardy' as opposed to 'boardy' as we also just got Exploding Kittens, which is 'cardy'?!

ChoccyJules · 07/12/2015 12:16

And Happy Birthday fuzzpig !

fuzzpig · 07/12/2015 13:12

Thank you :o

I haven't played Dominion, seems to be described as a card game on Amazon though. I'm really excited to hear how everyone gets on with Exploding Kittens - I hope this thread keeps going after the big day with updates! :)

A new (to me) game just came up on my recommendations - TIME Stories - anyone played? The concept is something DH would like I think.

Yay, so glad I found the board game thread. My boys (aged 9 and 11) are getting Dungeon Petz this year, as well as Krosmaster Arena from their grandparents. I can't wait as I know they will love them (and I want to play them). Smile They are also getting Exploding Kittens and Boss Monster from my brother. I would like to get them a small card game each to put in their stockings too - any suggestions? We have Batman love letter and Zombie dice but nothing else smallish.

Toffeelatteplease · 07/12/2015 14:34

Dominion is totally cardy

fuzzpig · 08/12/2015 08:18

Fluxx is pretty cool blue - lots of different themed ones available like Monty Python, space etc.

If they like numbers, Phase 10 is fun. Boggle Slam for a quick word game, or Bananagrams is lovely.

I've heard good things about Frenzi, Coup, Munchkin and Guillotine but haven't played them myself.

Ordered Sleeping Queens and Super Tooth yesterday. [santa]

I'm taking a trip to our local game shop today Grin I don't get there much as it is an hours drive away, but I'd much rather give them my money rather than Amazon.

iloveblue what about dobble or gubs.

There is also another game like dobble - Diavolo, but I've never played it - anyone else??

alwaystimeforcoffee · 08/12/2015 08:55

We're all big fans of Scotland Yard in this household!

The rules do take a bit of getting used to however, so it might be better for older children

fuzzpig · 08/12/2015 09:21

Diavolo is one on my wishlist! Even though I don't really know much about it Blush my general method is to add something to my wishlist as soon as I hear of/see it, and only later will I look into it properly.

Enjoy the game shop! Our local one is called Battle Quest and they are absolutely brilliant.

I agree about giving them my money rather than Amazon! I much prefer spending money there. With businesses like that it's use 'em or lose 'em isn't it! And they deserve lots of custom because they are a really great team.

Have now ordered not from Amazon honest Dominion for DH and something called Sussed for my god-daughter. I thought Exploding Kittens may not be to her parents' taste and didn't risk getting Sushi Up because they're veggie (don't laugh, minefield this present-buying!).

Dominion won out because it seems very popular and though it's cardy, I have asked for a Carcassone expansion pack, so that's boardy.

Thanks for a fab thread Xmas Grin

fuzzpig · 08/12/2015 16:11

I misread your post then. I thought you'd avoided Sushi Go because it may have offended, but still bought Exploding Kittens, because obviously that could never offend anybody... Xmas Grin

And you're most welcome for the thread! Any excuse to discuss board games IMO...

Wolfcub · 08/12/2015 19:25

Thappy birthday Fuzz. We opened Dominion last night. Really good deck builder. Dh is just teaching said to play now. Scotland Yard fans might like mr jack (full size and pocket) and spectre ops

Wolfcub · 08/12/2015 19:26

Ds not said

Dancergirl · 08/12/2015 21:05

Are there any good independent game shops in the london area?

ChoccyJules · 08/12/2015 21:08

I'm totally sticking with this thread once the Christmas mania is over, too Xmas Smile

iloveblue · 08/12/2015 23:14

Thanks for the suggestions - we have Munchkin and Fluxx but none of the others suggested. Smile

Chillywhippet · 08/12/2015 23:54

Have finally read whole thread but too late for the amazon offer on 7 wonders and Dixit.
Will stick to DD's request of cash and guns plus one other. Will check out local game shop on day off.

We got an old box of games from my DM's house yesterday. Tonight we played Quoridor (nice wooden board and pieces), a bit like drafts with walls and Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers.

The DC were vicious! I haven't played these games with them for ages. Now they are teens they were blocking me in both games. Funny, when DD, now 16 was small we just played Carcassonne like a puzzle and added up fish. Happy days.

They clearly need some more complex games. Just remembered we have Dominion in a box somewhere too...

fuzzpig · 09/12/2015 08:30

Ooh, Quoridor is one that's been on my wishlist for a while. Do you have the proper one of the Quoridor Kid one? I really like the look of it but wasn't sure if it'd be too similar to other maze based games like Labyrinth and Lego Minotaurus?
