It's crap. There's no way that telescope she buys him has anywhere near the amount of magnification required for such detail over that great distance. Also, as soon as those balloons get to the edge of space they'd burst and send the crappy telescope crashing down to earth.

Very badly researched, JL [santa]

WingMirrorSpider · 06/11/2015 13:39

(I actually love it and did shed a tear)

SuckingEggs · 06/11/2015 13:40

I like it. And it's heart-wrenching.

Cynicism can eff off. It is trying to highlight isolation. If that's annoying, steam away!

GingerIvy · 06/11/2015 13:42

Loved it.

Sidge · 06/11/2015 13:43

It's crap.

Yeah I get that it's "let's all look out for someone old and lonely this Christmas" but really? Let's ignore the basic physics anomalies and the twee breathy singing girl and focus on the fact that the sweet little middle class girl has sent a telescope to a lonely old man to allow him to see what he's missing. Gee, have some of that Christmas spirit Grandpa. Hmm

HortonWho · 06/11/2015 13:45

I saw it as the old man is lonely and he's got no idea someone is trying to reach out to him, wave at him, is thinking of him... until he gets his christmas gift. And then he's able to see someone out there has been thinking of him all along.

SuckingEggs · 06/11/2015 13:47

What the hell has physics got to to with it?! Confused

It's an advert fgs.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 06/11/2015 13:55

What's physics got to do with it? Same as what's hibernation and animal instinct got to do with bear and the hare. Scratch the surface and it all falls down. It's the JL Christmas Phenomenon. It evokes a peculiar emotion of "Awww that's- hang on WTF?"

Trying to highlight isolation is not what's annoying and being reductive that way misses what people are saying. In fact, what they're saying is that it slightly misses the point and sentimentalises the issue.

TiredEmma, please tell me that lady found somebody to have some food with?

Sidge · 06/11/2015 14:06

Oh I know it's just an advert. Like most of them you just have to suspend disbelief that balloons can get to the moon and a small telescope can see that far!

It just left me cold, that's all. The JL Christmas advert should make you feel warm and fuzzy like the last couple of years' ones did. This one just makes me feel sad and miserable. I'd have preferred it if she'd sent him a rocket to bring him back to Earth.

SuckingEggs · 06/11/2015 14:17

I agree - a rocket would have been better. I suppose they wanted to hammer home the pain of isolation (they worked with Age UK).

SuckingEggs · 06/11/2015 14:18

I thought it was full of pain actually. It isn't warm and fluffy - for him. He cries.

BeeeeAve · 06/11/2015 14:21

God, I must be a truly miserable bitch.

That was the biggest load of schmaltzy garbage I've seen yet from these Christmas ads.

I boycott John Lewis at Christmas because it is so overpriced , and this doesn't help.

raracleopatra · 06/11/2015 14:25

I didn't realise it was JL Christmas ad time already!

I think it's quite dreary, it is sad and I get the sentiment but it's not one of their best I don't think.

It's basically trying to make people buy big expensive gifts for relatives they never see the rest of the year in order to ease their guilt

EeyoresTail · 06/11/2015 14:29

I'm another one who couldn't get over the physics or lack of of it. Very underwhelming.
Flowers for all the posters adversely affected by it

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 06/11/2015 14:34

Sorry, just don't get the fuss about these at all. I like the idea of the partnership with Age Concern though.

Monica101 · 06/11/2015 15:11

This one didn't manage to pull my heart strings. Though the Tiny Dancer one did so i'm not immune from John Lewis.

Brioche201 · 06/11/2015 15:12

They are failing because they are trying way too hard.
The best one by a country mile this year is the Lidl 'christmas school' one.Original ,humorous and not sickly.

raracleopatra · 06/11/2015 15:23

Is the song the Royle Family theme?

iwouldgoouttonight · 06/11/2015 16:14

Yes it's the Royle Family theme, but sung by someone else. I've had it in my head all day since seeing the advert. It's made me want to watch a Royle Family Christmas special! I think that's more my demographic Grin

iwouldgoouttonight · 06/11/2015 16:17

The JL ad has done its job though because whether or not you like it its got everyone talking about them and their brand.

PhilPhilConnors · 06/11/2015 16:20

I hated it, for the reasons that Wingmirror pointed out.
I realise this is massively missing the point, but these things are important to me. It's totally implausible. Would have been better as a cartoon. Or bear and hare. Or something.

I preferred the penguins/imagination of children etc.

Cel982 · 06/11/2015 16:22

I was really disappointed in it - didn't move me at all (and I'm a real soft touch for a soppy ad). Bah humbug.

Cel982 · 06/11/2015 16:24

(But your post has me teary now, Tiredemma!)

SideOrderofChips · 06/11/2015 16:28

I had a look at their overpriced shite products relating to the ad and its crap

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 06/11/2015 16:33

It may grow on me but I still prefer last years penguin one.

The first time I saw it I was all "Awww that's adorable" and misty eyed but when it got to the end and it was a toy penguin I gasped and BAWLED. I thought it was brilliant. In fact I just watched it again and cried!
