Same here Bella Vida - this is the first Xmas period we'll have without my Gramps here and the tear running down the man's face just set me off...

candykane25 · 06/11/2015 10:05

Not a fan. It cost £7million and they are asking us to buy products they stock which will raise money for Age UK.

thunderbird69 · 06/11/2015 10:10

I really don't get it - someone explain!

Who is he? Does the little girl know him? Isn't the ending sad because he can now see everyone else on another planet having fun and it makes him cry?

spaghettiarms1 · 06/11/2015 10:25

Ooo, I like the Duracell one.

Yes, yes, the John Lewis one is a bit of a weepy but the Duracell is best (may be biased as it is just like watching my own dc)
Smile
I've seen John Lewis, Very, Asda, Anchor, Paypal, Mulberry, Lidl, Argos and Duracell. Any I've missed?

candykane25 · 06/11/2015 10:28

I agree it is very sad. I also loss my dad just over a year ago and I agree with other bereaved posters that it pulls on emotions but not in a way that makes me feel good. I am so not bah humbug, and I am happy to support many charities including Age UK, but this ad hits a cynical nerve with me.

curriegirl · 06/11/2015 10:32

He's the man on the moon.

thunderbird I'm fairly sure it is trying to depict the feelings of isolation thay many elderly people feel on a daily basis as others just get on with daily life. They probably do feel 'half a world away'.

Receiving a gift made the old man feel like someone cared about him and it made him cry.

The singer is a Norwegian girl called Aurora.

Pat1ence · 06/11/2015 10:42

My Nan died a few months ago. I was very, very close to her. She had dementia and I the hospital, a couple of days before she died, I was helping her drink out of a 'sippy cup', she looked into my eyes like a baby. It broke my heart.
The shot at the end, with the moon man's eye, has destroyed me. I've been crying for two hours. I understand I'm in the midst of grief but I can't help but feel this ad is taking advantage of emotions such as mine.

I wish they'd done a cartoon.

His face when the present arrives... I want my Nan back Sad

milkmilklemonade12 · 06/11/2015 10:51

I'm in two minds. I like it because it makes you think about the elderly people who may feel forgotten; and maybe you could be doing more to make them feel included.

However, it lacks something but I don't know what.

It doesn't feel cynical though. To be honest the Sainsbury's one last year left me feeling cold!

I think that raising money for Age UK is a good thing though.

AbsintheMakesTheHeart · 06/11/2015 11:02

My problem with it is that it's clearly targeted at busy mc families - obviously, as they're the ones with the spending power JL want to harness. But elderly people who live on their own with only the TV for company most of the time are going to see it at every bloody ad break and be reminded all over again how rubbish it is to be on your own, not just at Christmas but in January, February etc etc.

Flowers pat1ence

thunderbird69 · 06/11/2015 11:02

ok, I thought he represented a grandad who had passed away - then thought it odd that he got a present.
It sounds like a lot of people are associating it with lost loved ones rather than lonely people.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 06/11/2015 11:08

I've watched it now (and stamped my bingo card).

I don't know what to think tbh.

I think it's correct that it appeals (as ever) to that certain demographic but step outside of that and it's probably quite upsetting for a lot of people.

pat1ence, I'm so sorry. My darling grandma is in a home now (she's 90) and this will be the first Christmas I think we can't have her over for the day. She's asking every time I see her if we're having her over for Christmas and I want to howl.

SideOrderofChips · 06/11/2015 11:14

Nope my favourite John Lewis is the one of the little boy wanting to give a present still.

and my ultimate favourite is still sainsbury's Christmas in a day

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2015 11:15

An elderly relative of mine who had a thing for Christmas died a couple of weeks ago.

I am in pieces to this.

And now want a telescope.

edgarallanpoe · 06/11/2015 11:18

According to JL Christmas website

"John Lewis and Age UK are Partnering up this Christmas to help some of the million older people who will go for a month without speaking to anyone."

ItStillLooksLikeRainDear · 06/11/2015 11:31

Was anyone else expecting Jim Royale to make an appearance?

cate16 · 06/11/2015 11:47

Not good for the recently bereaved :( :(

toomuchtooold · 06/11/2015 11:59

This one lacks suspense, doesn't it? It's clear the kid and the man are going to make contact in some way. Last year's, when you realise the penguin's only a real penguin in the boy's imagination, was much better.

toomuchtooold · 06/11/2015 12:00

OTOH it was cool that they had a girl playing the football and using the telescope. I liked that.

iwouldgoouttonight · 06/11/2015 12:02

ItStillLooksLikeRainDear yes!

It made me want to watch the Royle Family.

Stickerrocks · 06/11/2015 12:09

Maybe it's aimed at making at the MNetters with their "Christmas is for me & my immediate family, stuff the older generation" feel guilty.

I loved it.

PeaceOfWildThings · 06/11/2015 12:23

Exactly! I want my mum back from the grip of alzheimer's, my dad from the dead, my daughter from hospital and her horrible illness. This has really touched a nerve. Flowers to everyone who feels the same way.

MidnightVelvetthe4th · 06/11/2015 13:21

Flowers to everyone who's been unexpectedly ambushed by it.

I hate that song & its spoiled it for me, I prefer the penguin one

lavazzzalover · 06/11/2015 13:32

its shit. sorry. it really is. .

Tiredemma · 06/11/2015 13:36

Loved it.

Sad though. Reminded me so much of the Christmas Day that I was at work as a BT telephone operator (back in the days of plain old 192). Old lady phoned and asked if I knew of anywhere that she could go and have a meal with other people as she was on her own and very lonely.

poignant.
