No, I don't like the advert really, it's very Outside-Looking-In.

And I work in a field of mainly older people, I know how isolating Christmas can be (and how many people "hate Christmas" )

Just rewatched some old JL adverts, the Snowman one where he stuck at the side of the motorway scared to cross daft bugger he used the bridge in the previous shot Awwwww

mountainstoat · 06/11/2015 17:49

Oh dear, I predict a lot of remaindered Man in the Moon crap in the January sales

I was hoping for a nice cuddly animal on the advert that I could snap up and sell on ebay for five times the cost when they sold out at JL

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2015 17:53

For anyone who loves them but wants a laugh and for the cynics

The

The Daily Mash - 'Peeping Tom Given Telescope'

The Guardian - 'Who is Moon Hitler'

iwouldgoouttonight · 06/11/2015 18:22

Those articles are hilarious.

Clawdy · 06/11/2015 18:27

Yes,the merchandise linked with the ad is very ordinary, saw it in store today. Fifteen pounds for a pleasant but ordinary Santa cushion is a bit steep.

lavazzzalover · 06/11/2015 19:46

well ive just seen Aldi's.

brilliant and christmassy!

moggiek · 06/11/2015 21:33

Really disappointed. Was looking forward to a good weepy, but it's awful!

IDismyname · 06/11/2015 21:44

I was left pretty unmoved by it all. Probably nor helped by my DF with dementia - but at least he's not on his own...

I loved last years penguin, and the cartoon before that. But this years is a bit 'Meh'.

Fairiesarereal · 06/11/2015 23:36

I thought he was Father Christmas too, at the beginning - duh!

It made me feel a bit depressed Sad

Tiredemma did the old lady have a Merry Christmas in the end? Please tell me she did, pleeeeease................

Toraleistripe · 06/11/2015 23:40

Awwwww Tiredemma.....Made me so so sad.

eternalopt · 07/11/2015 06:33

Hmm. Not a fan. Would've liked a happy ending where old bloke was included in something, not left isolated but with the ability to now see what he's missing! Agree with a post further up that it would be awful for a lonely old person to keep seeing this advert. Having said that, it's good that age UK will get something out of it, and it's reminded me that I've been meaning to sign up to a scheme to be a friend for an old person who's alone for a while, so some good will come out of the heart wrenching! It's just now where you expect moral guidance to come from. It's a bit like going to see your favourite band at a concert and it being really good, but they stop to lecture you on the environment - you know they're right, but it's not what you came for!

eternalopt · 07/11/2015 06:36

Ha ha. Just read the guardian article. Spot on!

Sansoora · 07/11/2015 07:04

I found it very depressing.

LadyNym · 07/11/2015 09:12

The advert left me feeling pretty indifferent but this thread has made me cry! Sorry for anyone suffering from a bereavement. Flowers

Getit · 07/11/2015 09:23

I didn't like it

KitKat1985 · 07/11/2015 09:52

I'm getting a bit cynical about the whole 'John Lewis tug-on-your-heartstrings Christmas advert' every year. Also I don't think this ad was one of their better ones. In all honesty if I was stuck on the bloody moon and someone sent me a telescope to show how much fun they were having without me, I'm not sure that would lift my mood much.

Pixa · 07/11/2015 10:00

I liked it but forbade different reason then portrayed in the advert. My husband and I have been diagnosed with infertility. One of our biggest fears is being alone in our old age. It's quite nice to think that when we get to that age we might not necessarily be alone! Smile Silly I know.

Pixa · 07/11/2015 10:02

For, not forbade. Reasons, not reason. I should really proof read...

violetsarentblue · 07/11/2015 10:11

It's interesting, but too depressing for a Christmas ad.
I would think that anyone suffering illness, or bereavement at this time of the year would feel even worse after watching that.

violetsarentblue · 07/11/2015 10:13

However, some of the parodies are hilarious and worth watching.

pigsinmud · 07/11/2015 10:16

Just watched it. I thought it was the girl's dead Grandad and she was thinking about him and in her imagination she sent him a telescope so he could still see her as she went about her life.

I preferred it to the bloody penguin one last year. I hated that one.

I have never cried at an advert...perhaps I have a stone heart!

redheadandgoingtobed · 07/11/2015 10:25

Great spoof made in 7 hours.

SockQueen · 07/11/2015 10:48

Did nothing for me. Where people are involved (rather than penguins etc) I find it harder to suspend disbelief, and that distracted me from whatever message it was trying to push.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 07/11/2015 11:24

I've never cried at an advert either, mind you since the advent of Sky+ I rarely see any, I only saw the penguin one last year on Gogglebox.

Postchildrenpregranny · 07/11/2015 12:22

Just wish they'd give a massive donation to Age Uk instead of spending mahoosive amounts of money on an ad. But age has made me cynical .
Are telescopes going to be this year's 'must have' .
