Um, twelve dolls; twelve tops; seven pairs of trousers etc etc - won't the kid just get a bit bored opening all that? Same applies to all the Lego or whatever it was. Isn't part of the fun of collecting stuff the delayed gratification?

I clicked on the thread having no clue what it was on about, btw.

I'll get my goat.

usualsuspect333 · 08/11/2014 22:09

WTF has happened to MN?

HowsTheSerenity · 08/11/2014 22:09

Laura - you might as well stay and enjoy the wonder that is MN!

flame34 · 08/11/2014 22:10

its went all sparky on MN , its like a real life panto ha ha

lauraR1989 · 08/11/2014 22:10

I am sparkly real, I'm 'hun' real, I'm 'J-cub' real! Grin.......only came over this side yesterday to defend myself from vile comments, didn't even know you ladies existed!

KnittedJimmyChoos · 08/11/2014 22:12

And if it is, how does one explain to DC why they have so much less than their friends, before they are old enough to appreciate priorities being elsewhere

I don't look at the green grass and neither do my dc, they dont compare and I don't. We appreciate what we have, there by the grace of god and all....

SeeChooJimmy · 08/11/2014 22:12

Solasum, I don't think there is a 'norm' when it comes to Christmas, it does get more expensive as they get older but I think like everything else we all do it to our own buget and what we feel is right for our own dcs, I know lots of friend spend far more than me, some around the same and some less but no ones christmas is any better or worse than anyone elses imo.

HowsTheSerenity I thought id bring some pink sparkle over now that we know most of you hate it so much.....really didn't have a clue what the hell was going on until I ventured over to AIBU and was wowed with how the sites slate eachother.....we are all mums :-/

KnittedJimmyChoos · 08/11/2014 22:14

There are clearly some very lucky children out there.

I wouldn't have called them lucky children really, they were just children who happened to get lots of brand new in fashion toys at xmas.

CurlyWurlyCake · 08/11/2014 22:14

I bought my first present today plus doing an order with the book people.

I took my DDs around town today to get a feel for what they want, now they are older it is getting harder.

Funnily enough DD1 loved white musk in the bodyshop, I used to drench myself in the stuff at her age Smile

marne2 · 08/11/2014 22:16

My dd's get around £30 spent on them for birthdays, they don't have parties ( due to them having Autism it's too much for them ), we don't have expensive holidays, expensive trips out and I don't buy much during the year ( maybe top the play dough, pens and paper up ). My dd's don't really talk about what they have got with their friends ( they might mention their main present ) I don't think kids brag about what they got the same as they don't complain about what they didn't get. My dd's don't get as much as some do, we do try and limit what we spend and we save all year. We do other things to celebrate, we go to church, we give to charity and food banks, we spend time with close family and we bake together so Christmas isn't just about the gifts, tbh we enjoy the run up to Christmas more than the big day.

flame34 · 08/11/2014 22:16

can someone explain to my thick head what AIBU is ??

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 08/11/2014 22:16

I don't give a fuck that I can't afford these piles of gifts, because I wouldn't want my son to have all that in one go, in addition to all the stuff his family will get him.
He's getting a new bike from me, and he will have a decent stocking. Probably £150-200 all together. I can't imagine buying as much stuff as people up thread.

Surely if this is a netmums thing it could just stay there?

KnittedJimmyChoos · 08/11/2014 22:17

Wow
I just deleted my post
I'm speechless

RJnomore · 08/11/2014 22:19

There will always be children who get more than yours and children who get less than yours.

That's over the whole of life, not just Christmas.

The trick is teaching them to be grateful for what they do have, respect and take care of it, not be bitter and jealous of those who have more and not be smug or look down on those who have less.

Measure the person by who they are and not what they have, as it were.

Don't teach your kids that self esteem comes from belongings. Don't feel you are failing if you give them less or it's superior if they get more (or less, deoending on your viewpoint!) teach them compassion and teach them that their self worth comes from what they do not what you have and you won't go far wrong, whether they're opening piles of presents, or one wooden goat Grin

To channel olivia

peace and love people, peace and love

Solasum · 08/11/2014 22:20

SeeChoo more than anything this makes me feel very old. It has simply never occurred to me before that people buy for their DCs on such a scale. When I was little, we got one big present, and a stocking from parents, and then bits and pieces from others. There is no question of hardship either then or now, but as a pp has said I cannot imagine sustaining the same excitement opening 10 dolls as I used to opening 1. You must all have huge houses to accommodate!

lauraR1989 · 08/11/2014 22:20

Flame Am I Being Unreasonable (I had no idea either!) x

Just to add.....MY kids don't have a huge family to buy for them either, ex's side don't bother at all x

flame34 · 08/11/2014 22:22

not at all , i am from the sparkly side :-) sent a pm

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 08/11/2014 22:22

Jesus Laura please stop with the kisses, it's grating.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 08/11/2014 22:23

I particularly LOVE the two large toy heads as they actually go on the wall, thought they would be sooo sweet in dc rooms.

They were only 12 each from H and M home AND because they took so long to send them to me and I complained, I got quite a bit of money off and my postage back.

The other stuff is sainsburies toy sale ( i forgot to photo Olaf - argos 3 for 2, I got amazeball and perfume lab too) the goth girl book was free, as I had an incident in the shop and they gave me vouchers Grin still got more to use on those, cubiamo was from ebay - seller called jumbo genie, seems to have lots of cut price djeco stuff, free postage and best offer...made an offer and it was accepted. Qwirkle as highly recommended on a few sites and Morrison's ginger bread house as recommended here Grin

fairgame · 08/11/2014 22:23

Jeez i thought i went overboard spending £200-£300 on DS but this is on a completely different scale altogether!
I have learnt from experience not to go mad because DS will only play with a few things (usually lego) the rest just sits there gathering dust.

Do your kids really play with everything you buy them?

IgnoreMeEveryOtherFuckerDoes · 08/11/2014 22:23

Really Ehric how lucky you have other family members that buy your kids presents, sadly there is only me, yes one and ONLY parent that buys my kids xmas presents oh and one set of grandparents that live hundreds of miles away that will send money up but the 3yr old hasn't grasped the meaning of paper money yet.
