I feel like Santa now, making Christmas dreams come true...

I missed the tits up thread. I take it someone from here linked to a thread on Netmums about presents? That's a bit rude, I can see why people would be upset. Each site is so different, what works on these probably just doesn't translate over here.

The Christmas bargain thread is great though, have you had a look?

sweetsomethings · 09/11/2014 01:18

Yeah someone linked to Netmums it got nasty and Mumsnet took it down. They were getting a bit personal and naming people kids etc. Yeah i love the bargain threads its the reason i joined here a few years ago.

DreamsOfFreddieInTheNight · 09/11/2014 01:23

Oh dear. Thanks, that explains it. So people came here to post pictures of their presents in retaliation?

I think pictures of Karl Urban would be better. Or Karl Urban cleaning an oven, ideally?

sweetsomethings · 09/11/2014 01:27

I think as much as people were slating the thread some people liked the idea and that's where this thread has come from. As people thought instead of writing lists etc it was nice to see the pictures.

DreamsOfFreddieInTheNight · 09/11/2014 01:27

This is the best I can do. Sorry.

Ok i now know who Karl Urban is thanks google. He is hot!

DreamsOfFreddieInTheNight · 09/11/2014 01:36

Yes, just spent far too long looking at pictures of him. For research, obvs.

o0 · 09/11/2014 01:38

And the bastards cancelled Almost Human

Why, whhhhy, WHHHHHHYYYYY?

There's not enough Karl Urban tv/film. I'm reduced to reading fanfic of film and tv shows he's been in.

I may have a teeny weeny crush...

AllThatGlistens · 09/11/2014 06:43

Ohhhh. There's been an attempt to bring "sparkles" over here?

This will go well Grin

Vivacia · 09/11/2014 07:08

more than anything this makes me feel very old. It has simply never occurred to me before that people buy for their DCs on such a scale

I think that this is me. I feel similar to solasum and minty. We could spend an awful lot more on the children's presents than we do. This thread has made me stop and think about that, and wonder why we don't. We do similar as when we were growing up, it's one main present and a stocking from us.

I have never seen these "stash photos" before.

^^ What Vivacia said.

Our families have always been generous and it's lovely, but we have a limit on it. I just don't think children can appreciate the full value of mountains and mountains of presents all in one go, and I'm talking sacks full here.

I don't know if these stash photos are new or have always been a 'thing' on other sites?

In all the years I've been here I've never seen it. Having said that though, the photos are a new feature so perhaps it might crop up now Confused

The Secret Santa is a fabulous feature that runs ever year and I've spent loads of time on the Christmas board and Reasties threads, the ethos for Huns and lol and hubs just doesn't want to coexist peacefully on here, in all honesty.

Seriously, pink sparkly stuff though? I can't ever see that taking over MN Grin

See, I'm the type of poster KnittedJimmyChoos could be talking about Smile. We've had a shit year, which started with a very sudden and traumatic death of a much loved family member. And recently had very sad news about the health of my bloody brilliant Dad. I don't bother that much with the Christmas threads usually (have been on MN for about 7 years), but have been dipping in and out this year to cheer myself up, distract myself, pass some time and I've enjoyed them.

I can't see pictures (bloody app) but Christ have I had my eyes opened to the pettiness of some posters. I've bought more for my kids this year because they've had a tough year and God knows will probably have a tougher 2015 and if that means I'm contributing to a mountain of "tat", rampant consumerism, the loss of the real meaning of Christmas, buying their love (for the love of God) then I really couldn't give two shiny shites. But I will never understand why some posters open and post on threads which obviously damages their delicate sensibilities with regards to what other people's children get for Christmas.

Oh and I also feel the Karl Urban love Smile

TheVioletTinsel · 09/11/2014 08:09

Blimey! Laura seems like a nice lass who has been goaded massively on other threads on here and has been remarkably gutsy and at times gracious. hope you get a good deal for the iPad Laura

differentnameforthis · 09/11/2014 08:23

You know what saddens me most about these pictures? Not the gratuitous overspending, but the fact that in pretty much all (note, I didn't say ALL) the pictures the item are things that a child can use BY THEMSELVES.

No bard games, nothing to bring the family together. I am getting my girls a couple of games this year that they can do together, and that we can do with them. Yet most photos show things that can only really be used by an individual.

No sense of family coming together at all. Sad

VampiresLoveNECKtarines · 09/11/2014 08:34

differentnameforthis I completely agree.

I know it is said that the Xmas threads are hidden in a Xmas section on Mumsnet so families who are struggling don't have to see it, but where do children hide when they talk about how many presents they are going to be getting with their peers in the playground?!?

I am guilty of buying my children way too many presents, but what happens to the poor children who have parents who simply cannot afford :(

123Jump · 09/11/2014 08:39

I personally don't care how much people spend on Christmas, it is the concept of photographing it and putting it on t'interweb that confuses me.
But some folks seem to like it.

marne2 · 09/11/2014 08:39

Do kids really talk a bout what they have got for Christmas or how many presents they got? None of dd's friends do and we never did when we were kids.

RJnomore · 09/11/2014 08:42

I don't know so much about that, we find Xbox games and Lego pretty interactive (board games we are not so good at as we are indeed all quite competitive as a familyBlush but the likes of Lego superheroes where we play on the same side work wonderfully). Or I like doing a jigsaw or a building puzzle with dd2, last year we built a mini taj mahal from a kit during the Christmas holidays, this year I think it's the empire state building we have, and DH will build Lego with her. She's 10 so could do it herself but we use it to play with her.

And surely I am not the only parent who deliberately buys dolls so that they can plays with their kids with their dolls and action figures?

Or in the case of my older daughter, I try out makeup on her or even occasionally let her try makeup or hair ideas on me first.

I don't think you can tell how people use toys to interact with their child from looking at the toy/gift necessarily. I also think you want to make sure there are things in there at Christmas that the child can use on their own while the adults sort the food or just have a break from entertaining them.

And finally this year we are risking a competitive game - its UNO - and if I posted a photo I bet you it would slip past pretty much unnoticed at the side of the larger boxes.

RJnomore · 09/11/2014 08:45

To be honest, it isn't the photos that are causing the - what should we call it?

Every year there's a wht have you bought thread where people post lists and every year there is the same type of comment and put downs. The only difference here is we can see the present rather than read it off the list.

Photo thing is a complete red herring about what's going on.
