19p now! Good sized jar for jam though and I think we jazzed it up with extra spices and it was ok-ish. I think I probably fed it to the children Blush

thell · 28/09/2011 13:28

I've bought a pack of Candy Canes from Sainsbury's, 22 for £2.

19p!!
I'm giving jars to my friend for her mum to make chutney and jam. She's asked that I don't give her curry jars, because the spice lingers...not sure if you guys have experienced that at all, but just thought I should mention it Smile

RueDeWakening · 28/09/2011 13:33

We've definitely broken pinterest :o can't even pin stuff now.

I'm still thinking about my plans, but so far I'll be doing skittle vodka, lemon hand scrub, a couple of buttercup bags, some fabric collages for the kiddies with their names/dobs on (pic of one on my profile that I did for DS at the weekend as a trial!). Oh and I'll make some kiwi jam when my neighbour hands over her kiwis :o

What else? Fudge, already been requested so that's a given, plus individual sized Christmas cakes for some (bit fiddly with the icing etc, but nice).

Oh and I bought some cups and jars to have a go at some snowman soup and some cakes in a jar, will see what happens with those.

Now I need to work out what I'm getting, from where, and who I'm giving what to!

LoveBeingAMummyAgain · 28/09/2011 13:37

From what I remember it's the lids it's the worst on but yeah can take a while to get rid of the smell.

debka · 28/09/2011 13:38

Made some fudge yesterday but I don't think I boiled it long enough cos the bloody stuff is not solid enough. It's set, but really sticky. Do you think I could melt it then boil it again or would it be a disaster?

Kveta · 28/09/2011 13:43

these look quite cheap for spice jars! I've been pondering what to do with homemade spice mixes, and think this might be the best option - what do you think? or these maybe? I need something quite small for spice mixes, hmm.

FlubbaBubba · 28/09/2011 13:59

I think you have to write that off debka (though you could always add it to icecream for a posh pudding for yourself as a reward!)
When I made fudge last week, I boiled it for about 15 mins and it bubbled furiously (to the top of the pan) and then suddenly sunk down and turned darker which is when I took it off the heat.

EauRouge · 28/09/2011 14:08

I tried to make fudge last year and it was a total disaster.

Eggdip- would curry sauce jars be OK to reuse? I had to ditch a jalapeno jar last christmas because I couldn't get rid of the smell from the lid.

eggdipdip · 28/09/2011 16:12

I think I soaked the lids in hot soapy water before popping them in the dishwasher and then soaking them in milton! So, yeah, maybe not worth the hassle lol!

Must be loads of other Basic/Value ranges out there though with less distinctive odours...hmm, I sense a shopping mission coming on!

eggdipdip · 28/09/2011 16:14

While we're on the subject on fails, I tried to make chocolate truffles last year... ds1 wouldn't let me take them to the school fete due to their striking resemblance to poo. In retrospect, I should have labelled them as reindeer poop and sent them anyway.

debka · 28/09/2011 16:22

I did the same flubba, maybe I'll have another look later, coat it in chocolate or something Grin. Can't eat it, just started Slimming World.

FlubbaBubba · 28/09/2011 16:25

Oh sod Slimming World debka :o [evil join-me-in-staying-rotund emoticon]

EauRouge · 28/09/2011 17:59

PMSL @ the poo truffles Grin

One thing I made years ago that was a success was those little marzipan sweets in the shape of various fruits. They took sodding ages though (this was pre-DDs) so I don't think I'll be able to do them again until the DDs are old enough to amuse themselves for several days an hour or two.

I think I am going to have a go at soap this year, I saw some nice soap once that had a slice of dried orange in so I might dry some citrus fruit and bung it in and hope it does go really manky. I think I'll do some body scrub too because it's nice and easy to make and I can do a huge batch and divide it up into jars.

For the multitude of children in my family I'm going to do candy cones made of felt with their initials on. That should be nice and easy to do, it needs to be because my cousins and brother have several million children between them (not with each other, I live in the fens but we haven't gone native).

I was thinking about making nut butter too but I'm not sure how long it stays fresh for.

FlubbaBubba · 28/09/2011 18:33

Reindeer Poo Truffles is a genius idea!! :)

For those of you looking for peppermint candy canes just been to sainsbo's to buy lots of weird things in cheap little jars and saw they're selling mini ones for a couple of quid linky thingy

KvetaI love those Spice Jars in the second link - they would look lovely with a spice mix Smile

Thanks for the buttercup bag link Rue, I may have to wait until next year when I have had a bit more practice but they look fab!

debka · 28/09/2011 19:49

flubba I only started today! Don't derail me already! Grin

chirpchirp · 28/09/2011 19:58

Just checking in as it feels like it's been ages since I was on here. So impressed with what everyone is up to. I've been making Christmas cards taking thumb prints from me, DH and DS and turning them into reindeers and robins, I'm actually quite surprised at how nice they look. Have also roped in a friend who wants to make Christmas pudding vodka so we're going to go half's on supplies and make that next week.

In the meantime I'm throwing my DH a Star Wars themed party for his birthday next Saturday so I'm up to my elbows in stormtrooper bunting and death star pinatas! Once I've got this out of the way I can refocus my efforts!

thell · 28/09/2011 20:40

Death Star pinata! That sounds awesome.
Wonder if I could convince DH to have a Star Wars themed party for his 40th party next summer,...

Candle wax and wicks arrived today! May have to have a tinker later, if the baby stays asleep long enough for me to gert the washing up done first Hmm

LoveBeingAMummyAgain · 28/09/2011 21:23

Flubba - cone on then what did you find jar wise??

MartyrStewart · 29/09/2011 09:27

Morning all Smile

Made another crayon roll last night, better results than the first one. Also made a tray of brownies as a test run then scoffed most of them

They are a bit too gooey, I think they could have done with another 10 minutes but my goodness they are delicious. If anyone wants me to post the recipe, just ask Smile

Alouiseg · 29/09/2011 10:01

4 jars of Picalilli made this morning, goodness I felt grown up having a jug of brining vegetables in the kitchen.

Alouiseg · 29/09/2011 10:03

Feels a bit weird making Christmassy stuff while it's hot and sunny outside though Hmm

HippyHippopotamus · 29/09/2011 10:18

picalilli is a brill idea! thank you, i'll be stealing that one!

LoveBeingAMummyAgain · 29/09/2011 10:28

Fab idea, any recipes?
