I have purchased a load of medium sized metal buckets today (tesco 25p if anyone's interested). Any suggestions as to what I could put in them or do with them? I'm thinking either presents for my childminded children or presents for my childminded children to give to their parents.

theancientmarinator · 26/09/2011 21:37

Egg you are the Goddess of Christmas - am off to order lego ice cube tray for lego obsessed DC1 right now!

mogs0 · 26/09/2011 22:19

Doh, just lost my post.

I love the Lego man ideas! I'm going to try out the melted wax crayon suggestion in the Lego mould - anyone know if any silicone moulds can be used in an oven or does it have to be special silicone?

welliesundermeballgoon · 26/09/2011 22:23

Oooh I have just been catching up! Loving all the ideas and my mind is in overdrive! latest idea is a dry cookie mix/snowman soup in a jar tied with ribbon and festive cutters -along with a mini apron for dn and fullsize for dsil made from the same fabric!

KeepInMind · 27/09/2011 10:34

Sneaks in and hides in corner, totally useless at making things so come to steal get inspiration from others

HippyHippopotamus · 27/09/2011 11:03

own up, who broke pinterest??! I'm trying to shamelessly steal ideas and it keeps failing!

girlywhirly · 27/09/2011 11:03

I had a pear ice-cream in France earlier this year which was yummy. Another favourite of mine is Delias poached pears in marsala from the Winter recipes book, it is our Christmas eve pud for after the gammon roasted in Guinness which isn't a Delia recipe. Any good to you, stressed? (Don't think the poached pears are intended to be bottled.)

prolificwillybreeder · 27/09/2011 11:46

Ah I see, thanks :-) I'll check that out now

prolificwillybreeder · 27/09/2011 11:52

Oh boo Pinterest is broken!

thell · 27/09/2011 12:05

Hello lovelies!
I've been lurking but don't think I've gotten round to posting yet.

I've duly signed up to Pinterest- here you go: pinterest.com/dippyhippy/christmas/
and started stealing following a couple of you!

I've taken the plunge and will be sharing a stall with a friend at the PTA Christmas Bazaar...hoping to make a bit of cash, maybe to spend on other things there! I'd love to be making Christmas Pudding vodka or similar for everyone, but our relatives aren't really drinkers :op
Still - might make some for me and a couple of friends Grin

For those making cosmetics, I did that a couple of years ago for friends and family, and it went down pretty well. I had to customise who had what though, and I was into Aromatherapy at the time and also tried to make individual blends for some people. Took ages in the end, but was very satisfying.
I made -

Sugar Body Scrub (similar to the Lemon Hand Scrub - you can vary the oils that go in)
Massage / Moisturising Oil (just blend carrier oil with essential oils)
Soap (melt & pour with essential oils and calendula petals added)
Hand Cream (I made from scratch using oil, water and emulsifier, but you can buy plain lotion to add e. oils to - aswell as bath foam, shower gel, shampoo & conditioners)

Later I learnt how to make Bath Bombs too.
It's easy to make a Christmassy scent using Orange Oil and a spice oil like cardamom or nutmeg - careful with cinnamon, it can be an irritant.
I used Frankincense too, which is fab but pricey, although you don't need much.

Now - I need some help! Anyone seen a good idea for stocking fillers I could make to sell, i.e. something that won't take too long.
I like the idea of a little kit. For girls I could put a length of thong in a bag with some beads, to make a bracelet or necklace. Is there a more boy-friendly equivalent?

ZimboMum · 27/09/2011 13:42

I made the lemon sugar scrub today. I used about

400ml granulated sugar
200ml caster sugar
250ml mild and light olive oil and
5ml lemon oil

It smells blardy lovely and works a treat on the old paws. It wasn't too abrasive and is quite a dry mix so doesn't make your hands too greasy. Couldn't smell the olive oil at all.

Hi thell! All your plans sound great. For your stocking fillers could you make a little lego kit for the boys? Just something really simple with only a few pieces?

mogs0 · 27/09/2011 13:52

Zimbo - I think I could be persuaded to try out the lemon scrub. What do you put it in?

Thell - I'm going to have a table at our school fete this year too and also sharing a table at a local craft fair with my sister.

On my list for the fairs so far - Lego men crayons, button Christmas tree decs, teacup pin cushions, mini bucket pin cushions, playdoh mix (still trying to decide on this one).

Also, after a huge success making one, I am thinking of making cushion covers. However, I have only ever made one and not sure if people would buy them at a Christmas fete/fair.

eggdipdip · 27/09/2011 13:59

mogs0 what about if they were Christmas themed cushions? You could buy these little cushions and sell them ready-covered?

mogs0 · 27/09/2011 14:03

Wow, they're very reasonable. I was thinking about just doing the covers without padding incase I don't sell them and end up having to store them!

HavingAnOffDAy · 27/09/2011 14:03

Oooh, Oooh, Oooh

I love all of your lovely ideas & pinterest looks fab!

Would one of you be willing to send me an invite if I pm you my email address please?

I am a Christmas addict & am hoping to have a bit of time for making pressies this year (plus am about to be be made redundant) so I'm following this thread with interest now I've found it!

Thanks

theancientmarinator · 27/09/2011 14:07

Thanks Hippy and Egg - have followed you on Pinterest. How can there have been so much good stuff out there on the net and I never found it before Pinterest was invented? I now have the moral dilemma though of telling my friends about Pinterest because they will love it or keeping it all to myself so that they don't realise everything I give their kids this year at Christmas has come straight off it?

ZimboMum · 27/09/2011 14:13

Mogs I put the sugar scrub into 175ml jars I got from hobbycraft and will tie some ribbon round the top of each with a label and a small spoon.

The ancient I am selflessly keeping pinterest/this thread a secret so that I can thoroughly spoil my friends and family this year Grin
