titfer what about a wall planner

mysteryfairy · 07/12/2010 17:00

Brother in early 30s, lives in New York, can't come home for Xmas due to shortage of time off and difficulty of travelling with new baby son for a couple of days on totally full flights.

Ideally would like to buy something online in the US that can be delivered straight to him.

Often order him fiction from Amazon.com which I think is somehow very English (e.g. Suspicions of Mr Whicher) or that he might otherwise miss (e.g. The Book Thief). Was thinking of the latest Kate Atkinson but it's not published in the US til March. Have also done Muji London buildings and vehicles before.

Would love a fantastic suggestion for a token gift I can order for him.

taffetazatyousantaclaus · 07/12/2010 17:10

What about these? or they do coasters?

Or tube map of some sort?

Can you not buy the Kate Atkinson and post it yourself? When is the last posting date?

noddyholder · 07/12/2010 17:26

www.deandeluca.com/GiftCardBalance.aspx they do gift vouchers as well as gift baskets - fantastic coffee which he may need with a baby Xmas Grin

3rdnparty · 07/12/2010 18:10

noddy - these come highly recommended by a friend who bakes for a living

BlathIceSkate · 09/12/2010 15:19

Need ideas for DD please. She has her 1st birthday and Christmas all in just 8 days and I've given all of my good ideas to our large family.

Not keen on getting her more 'stuff' but feeling mean for not getting her anything.

She is DC2 but as most 12 month-ish stuff is fairly unisex she has plenty of hand-me-downs from her big brother. She loves things which light up/make noise when buttons pressed etc. Not keen on just giving her cash as I'd feel like I needed to top up DS's bank account too. Was considering promising her a 'half-birthday' present as she'll no doubt need something in the summer??

Also DH - doesn't want anything he says. Not interested in food or DVD's or reading or games or music or clothes. Works on a computer all day then comes home and sits on the PC in the evening once the children are in bed. Buys himself anything he really wants. Occasionally decides he is going to get fit by going out on long bike rides - lasts a few weeks at most. Like taking photos but has a camera - not interested enough to need lenses/umbrellas etc. Drives an hour each way to work everyday. Totally stuck.

Quenelle · 09/12/2010 15:23

I have to share this perfect under £10 Secret Santa present for a laydee colleague (free delivery too):

pretty notebook

Even if she doesn't use it she'll think I have exquisite taste Wink

DoodleNoo · 09/12/2010 16:47

Calling parents of sons - help needed with a £10 present for an 8 year old boy that I don't know!

Plwase suggest for me something that any 8 year old boy would find acceptable (not cash cos he has a sister and I've bought something for her!).

alarkaspree · 09/12/2010 16:55

For the brother in New York how about something from Meyers of Keswick - it's a British grocery store in Greenwich Village. I suggest sausages, but you could also get mince pies/christmas cake/crackers etc.

BlathIceSkate · 09/12/2010 16:59

DoodleNoo - my 8 year old nephews requested this and this among other things. There was a whole list if neither of those suit....?

BlathIceSkate · 09/12/2010 17:00

Just realised you said £10 Blush I think both of those were £15.

trockodile · 09/12/2010 17:27

BlathIceSkate-if you really don't think she needs anything then I would buy a 'token'gift and put half the money you would have spent in each child's bank account on the basis that you are 'buying' the toy from DC1 for DC2.

DoodleNoo · 09/12/2010 17:50

Mysteryfairy - the British folky-ish band Mumford and Sons are about to go big in the US -they've had some good US reveiws I'm told - you'll know their stuff when you hear it cos it's been used on TV a lot - could you buy their album Sigh No More on amazon.com then your bro will be ahead of the game?

SantasMooningArse · 09/12/2010 18:00

Can I just recommend these if anyone looking for ideas? Suits my kids aged 7 - 10 and fairly cheap too (WHSmith ahve them as well)

here

Theya re fab: things like 'What does a monster eat for tea? can you draw it?'- guided free for all.

DoodleNoo · 09/12/2010 18:01

BlathIceSkate - the most useful present anyone bought our DD was a big fluffy pink bath towel which she still uses 8 years down the line - it's her towel to be used by no one else - she keeps it on the back of her door and not in the bathroom. boring - but a 1 year old won't realise that and very practical.

BlathIceSkate · 09/12/2010 18:04

DoodleNoo - had a look at the lists again. There was this which is under £10...?

I think you're right trockodile. Feels a bit mean as DS (almost 4) has a huge pile of presents (that he'll love, not just 'stuff') Keep having to remind myself that she's too small to notice or mind.

BlathIceSkate · 09/12/2010 18:05

Lol DoodleNoo - I've already bought her a towel Xmas Grin

Her hooded baby ones are getting too small so I got her a fluffy white one with flowers on it from John Lewis. Fab idea though!

clippityclop · 09/12/2010 18:17

Swimming costume with built in nappy thingy? Bath toys to take to the pool perhaps? Little shppoing basket with some plastic fruit etc? Boots/ELC.

DoodleNoo · 09/12/2010 18:28

A good one for anyone who loves Cornwall and / or cheese here. If you contact the dairy direct, they'll post you a 900g truckle of delicious Cornish Yarg, as I remember for around £20.

DoodleNoo · 09/12/2010 18:31

£15.95 actually. Even better!

BlathIceSkate · 09/12/2010 19:20

All great ideas clippity but all got.

She has a neoprene suit thing for the pool with a swim nappy underneath, DS has been to lessons since he was 6 months so we have every conceivable pool toy and bath toy going and he got a till - with plastic fruit and a free basket - for his 3rd birthday.
