I received this txt from my dd on Friday - is she the most self-contained 11 year old around?

I was in work, she was at home with her dad.

"I've started my p**d [her asterisks].yes I'm sure.No I haven't told Dad and I don't intend to.Yes I've put a pad on.No I don't feel scared or worried.Yes everything is under control, so there is no need to ask any questions!!Please carry on with your work and don't worry about me!!No I don't really want to talk about it when you get home, so just tell me which pads to use and you keep on buying them for me and everything will be fine!!OK!!"

I texted her back saying we would have a chat when I got home, she said "I'll pass on the chat thanks".

I haven't actually seen her for more then 5 minutes since she texted, as she has been out, I've been out etc.

She is just so grown up - I can't believe it!

We will be chatting about it, though...

(changed my name as she reads mn sometimes and would be mortified to see this here)

my immediate thoughts were, that op's dd was doing the right thing by telling her mum. It showed she wanted to share it with her, and knew it was the best thing to do.

I think dd was just dealign with it, and letting her mum know it was all ok, and not to worry, tinged with a bit of 'mum don't worry/fret' you know, 'mum don't make a big deal of it' or 'don't fuss me, cos i want to get my head around this too'

swiftyknickers · 24/08/2008 18:43

my first thought was how wonderful!! she sounds lovely and self assured and confident! well done.

my second thought was that trinityrhino must be premenstrual

TrinityRhino · 24/08/2008 18:45

'i'm beginning to think that myself swiftyknickers

LynetteScavo · 24/08/2008 18:47

growingdd, your DD sounds very grown up to me. I think her text was lovely -sweet of her to reasure you she was fine. You're obviouly doing a great job with her.

Although he texting skills are scarily good compared to mine.

swiftyknickers · 24/08/2008 18:47

honestly i have read a couple of threads this week where you have not seemed yourself0are you ok? or infact premesntrual!

tigermoth · 24/08/2008 18:54

I was first shocked then relieved but the way this thread was going - glad I didn't just read the first few posts as I was all ready to leap to growingdd's defence. But then I saw there was no need to

growingdd, I think your dd's text sounded fine - she wanted you to know, she didn't want you to fuss. Quite so. I can totally see where she was coming from. And you - I bet you have a brilliant relationship with your dd. (who are you btw?)

growingdd · 24/08/2008 19:04

tigermoth, i met you once, at a meetup in 2002...

I've only just come across this thread and have read very little of it but I am aghast at the replies from TRi nity and Margaret. I really cannot believe that you would call this young girl rude, immature and self-important on the basis of her text.

MmeLindt · 24/08/2008 19:45

I think that growingDD sounds lovely, and that she knows her mum really well. She send a amusing text, because she knew that it would make her mum laugh rather than worry.

You should be proud of her.

And the whole exclamation mark thing is just the way girls of that age write!!!

singingmum · 24/08/2008 19:54

God I hope I'm able to prep my dd as well as growingdd.
When I started mine I shouted to my mum(as she hadn't left any in the pre arranged place) and she sent one of my brothers to see what I wanted, cue screaming at him that it had to be mum and that I couldn't tell him.
Funny thing was I wasn't scared it wasn't a big deal it was natural and I knew it was coming so that was it.I was only annoyed that the things weren't there(turned out I get quite viscious when I have my monthly)
Well done growingdd love the text says everything needed really

TrinityRhino · 24/08/2008 19:57

I feel awful now
what have I been saying

I could be pre menstrual

Elibean · 24/08/2008 20:12

Respect to TR for owning hormonal actions. They are powerful thangs, hormones.

At least you didn't cut anyone's genitals off, TR

tigermoth · 24/08/2008 20:45

growingdd, do I know you by another name here, beginning with T and ending with R?

Doobydoo · 24/08/2008 20:49

to your dd's text.I think it is fab.Have only read about 20 posts[which is enough!]I think she sounds just fine.

georgimama · 24/08/2008 21:01

Could someone find me an 11 year old girl who ISN'T sarcastic and flippant please? I've never seen one.

I think the OP's daughter sounds really cool.

Spidermama · 24/08/2008 21:05

Haven't read all thread but am at trinityrhino saying it's rude.

I think it's so sweet. She's obviously very embarrassed, doesn't know hoew to approach it, doesn't want a big deal so is doing an am-I-bovvered act.

I would be so moved. I certainly wouldn't call that rude by any stretch of the imagination.

Cammelia · 24/08/2008 21:11

growingdd I am also the mother of an 11 year old dd (and she is dd2 so have been through this all before)

I can only guess that the majority of podters on here do not yet have 11 year olds , and have forgotten that they were once 11

I have only read half the posts but want ot reassure you that your dd is perfectly normal, sounds like she is doing really well with everything and she is a credit to you as a mother

I wish I had been able to send my own mother a text like your dd's, growingdd. Context is all and from what you've said about her, she sounds like a typical, sassy and funny pre-teen.
I hated telling my mother my periods had started, the whole interlude is etched on my mind forever, and not in a good way

ravenAK · 24/08/2008 21:16

I thought the text was very sweet - good humoured & teasing you a tiny bit because she knows your first instinct might be to fuss over her. It gave the impression of a warm, jokey relationship with you.

Good for her!

Batters, I kind of backed into the cupboard under the stairs and told her from behind one of those 1960s vinyl strip curtain things. I was actually looking at her sewing box as I ground the words out. Thank GOD for mobile phones.

Wow that was an emotional roller-coaster.

fwiw, growingdd, I just hope my dd is as self-assured as yours when she's 11.

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/08/2008 21:49

I spent the years before I actually started fretting about how I would tell my mum - really wished I could have sent her a text !
