Vaccination without consent

Hi, just wondering about the rules on nasal flu vaccination. I did NOT give consent to the school to get my daughter the nasal flu vaccination. She has been ill on the date of the first vaccination and bugs were coming and going. She could go to school, but was not well100%. She came home yesterday that she had the vaccination without me signing the consent form. Do not have to add that she coughing like hell and ill. No sleep all night .. I am completely angry!

How old is your daughter? Is she old enough that age could give informed consent herself?

On what basis are you angry? That your daughter has been given a vaccination and you did not sign a form? That your daughter has been given a vaccination and you are anti-vax? Some other reason?
Howshouldibehave · 23/12/2021 14:00

How old is she? When was it given?

I’m surprised they were doing this on the last day of term. If it has happened-sounds like the nursing team has made an error-they usually check consent forms very carefully.

Herald44 · 23/12/2021 14:02

@matildaithink It doesn't matter the reason!

A child has been given a medical procedure without their parents consent! This should not happen.

Honestly don't know what's happened to the world that the first thing people ask now is 'but are you anti-vax'?

NandorTheRelentless · 23/12/2021 14:05

How old is she
Why are you anti vax?
How do you know she had the vax? Did she tell you? or did you assume?
Do you have any paperwork?

Usually because most of the people complaining about people being given vaccines are almost always anti-vaxers.

hashbrownsandwich · 23/12/2021 14:08

Depending on her age it could be either she was able to consent for herself or if you were not able to give prior consent and she's in the younger range then she shouldn't have had it.

I give nasal flu, to reassure you, it can't make a child ill in the way of it can't give them flu or a cold. It would be purely coincidental.

Svara · 23/12/2021 14:11

I didn't think they were to have it if already unwell, regardless of if the child is old enough to be considered Gillick competent?

Svara · 23/12/2021 14:12

The parent's beliefs are irrelevant. This is about consent.

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 23/12/2021 14:15

How old is she as children if deemed to under stand what is going on can consent to medical treatment.

Obviously a young child could not but pre teen/teen could.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 23/12/2021 14:20

Depends entirely on how old she is. And it’s not the school that ask for permission. Schools are simply the venue, they have nothing at all to do with the giving of the vaccination.

inmyslippers · 23/12/2021 14:23

Just could not get worked up over a flu jab. It's done now

I agree with this.

I think the only relevant question is the age of the child. If very young then yes, I wouldn’t be happy about my lack of consent being ignored. My DD has had the flu nasal spray, this isn’t about being anti-vax, when my child is young she doesn’t get medicine/medical procedures without my or DH’s consent, or in an emergency situation.

Drunkpanda · 23/12/2021 14:37

I'd be relieved that my child had been given the nasal spray since I'd missed it first time round.

Fallagain · 23/12/2021 14:39

Flu vaccine should not be given if someone has a temperature in which case she wouldn’t be in school, otherwise it’s fine.

How old is the child? Are they of an age when they can give their own consent.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 23/12/2021 14:41

How old is she?

Having a cold is not a contraindication to having the sniff - unless the DC is so snotful (blocked or runny) as that can stop the vaccine getting in .

Svara · 23/12/2021 14:41

It could happen again to another child. If the child was not old enough to give their own informed consent then it needs to be determined how this was able to occur, and procedures put in place so it doesn't happen again.
Justgettingbye · 23/12/2021 14:41

At the school I work at the parent has to liaise and give consent to the flu clinic company rather than the school. So school admin just gets the classes and that's all

That's the same everywhere - the school is simply the site where the NHS flu immunisation programme is delivered
MagnoliatheMagnificent · 23/12/2021 14:52

How old is she? Secondary age? I give these too. Consent is strict but if deemed competent by the nurse/vaccinator they may have accepted your child's decision. It would have involved a full conversation so she would be aware of what's involved. What is your objection to it?

Bsmirched · 23/12/2021 14:53

The nurses who administer the flu jab check each consent form very carefully because it also contains information about if the child comes into contact with people with a compromised immune system. For this to have happened, school admin and the nurses would have all have to have not noticed that the form was clearly filled in as not giving permission. They also absolutely wouldn't give it to a child who was already unwell. Something has gone very wrong here.

stingofthebutterfly · 23/12/2021 14:53

This should be checked, but your complaint is not with the school. It's with the nursing team that delivered the vaccinations. By all means bring it up with them. Are you sure you filled in the form correctly? You say you haven't signed it, but you should have done if you didn't want her to have it. Is the child old enough to give informed consent?

No, you're right in that you don't have to add that she's coughing like hell and ill. The flu vaccination doesn't cause that. Are you more pissed off because she's had the vaccination or because you're tired?

JellybeanZs · 23/12/2021 14:58

So she is 5 years old. Why I am against it is my own business, my problem is :

She was not well enough for any dose!!!

Also we have survived without it so far, and she built up her own immunity without any artificial intervention and not being ill like now.. and she has intolerance against things like milk etc.

My anger is about giving it with out MY CONSENT.. and I think that is illegal.

Troublesometooth · 23/12/2021 15:02

I am more than happy for my child to have any vaccination, however I would be livid if my 5 year old was given one without my consent.

The flu clinic company? Not the NHS? Are businesses actually making money from vaccinating children in schools?
