Vaccination without consent

Hi, just wondering about the rules on nasal flu vaccination. I did NOT give consent to the school to get my daughter the nasal flu vaccination. She has been ill on the date of the first vaccination and bugs were coming and going. She could go to school, but was not well100%. She came home yesterday that she had the vaccination without me signing the consent form. Do not have to add that she coughing like hell and ill. No sleep all night .. I am completely angry!

OP posts:

@JellybeanZs

I am sure that 40 degrees fever , cough and being sorry for herself. Barking like a dog is not really a “yawn”. But thank you for the advice. I am not sure what she has intolerance for, but this is not funny.
She was at school with a 40 degree temperature????
Blossom64265 · 23/12/2021 16:53

The nasal spray is contraindicated for children with certain medical conditions. My child isn’t allowed to have it. It would be dangerous for her. I can easily understand why a parent would be very upset at a child being given this vaccine without parental consent.

We do get our dd vaccinated against the flu. She gets an injection in her specialists office right when the jabs become available every year. All the more reason that she wouldn’t need another dose at a school clinic, even if the spray weren’t contraindicated.

DickMabutt73962 · 23/12/2021 17:51

OP hasn't yet explained how she knows her child had the vaccine 🙄

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 23/12/2021 17:55

@JellybeanZs

She shouldn’t get those symptoms from The flu nasal spray, has she had a covid test?

I’ve got given my son permission for the nasal
Flu spray at school and they didn’t give it to him-
I would call school tomo and raise it

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/12/2021 17:58

She's probably got COVID.

At least she won't get the flu now.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/12/2021 18:03

@inmyslippers

Just could not get worked up over a flu jab. It's done now
And if parents refused because of an allergy and she was now in hospital? DS didn't have it at school. The reason is immaterial. As the legal guardian of a 6yo, that should be enough
OnceuponaRainbow18 · 23/12/2021 18:03

@NandorTheRelentless

I assumed that’s since getting the flu spray…!

hashbrownsandwich · 23/12/2021 18:04

@cptartapp

wonderful it isn't 'extremely dangerous' to have it twice. You can't over vaccinate. Practice nurse.

This.

hashbrownsandwich · 23/12/2021 18:05

Pretty sure not nurse would risk her PIN by vaccinating a child for the sake of it.

Me thinks OP needs to speak to the father.

Modern day Miss Marple me

SheWoreYellow · 23/12/2021 18:09

You sent a five year old to school with what sounds like croup or covid? That’s pretty negligent and irresponsible.

Clarkey86 · 23/12/2021 18:09

The only possible way I think this could happen, is if there’s more than one child with the same or a similar name and whoever collected the children might not know the class very well yet (e.g office staff), and read the names out without surnames, so child lined up. Then they passed the child over saying “This is Olivia X” and the child didn’t disagree so the nurse thought it was someone else.

It’s still be unusual for someone not to notice (like the teacher checking as they lined up) and a complete mistake though - very different to someone “deciding” to give it against your consent.

cherryonthecakes · 23/12/2021 19:25
  • check with the father. His consent is considered equal to yours - resident parent's consent doesn't override non-resident parent's consent.
  • at age 5 they should be asking for consent. If she was 15, then your dd can override your consent for stuff like this.
  • have you had her pcr tested ? Her symptoms sound like Covid rather than the flu vaccination
ZaraBananaAnd · 23/12/2021 19:27

OP you are absolutely justified to be angry.

This is about CONSENT not a vaccine debate. My son has a severe egg allergy and is unable to have a flu vaccine - what if this had been the same issue ?

You can complain about this and they must investigate and you deserve an apology

Kitkat151 · 23/12/2021 19:28

@JellybeanZs

He says he did not, but I am the main carer and if it turns out he did over ruled me I will take him back to court.
Solicitors would not be interested....he has PR ...which he can excercise in her best interest.....you would be wasting your money
Onatree · 23/12/2021 19:30

I am surprised your ex Partner has not taken you to court. If my partner tried to keep my kids unvaccinated because of his loopy ideas about own immunity in the style of do-your-own-research-hun, I would not spare him.

Kitkat151 · 23/12/2021 19:31

@WonderfulYou

It’s also extremely dangerous as she could have already had it which is why there was no consent.
Don’t be ridiculous🙄....you can’t be over vaccinated....why are you trying to frighten OP .....that’s a wicked thing to do
Wolfiefan · 23/12/2021 19:31

If her father has parental responsibility and have permission then I don’t think you’ve a leg to stand on.
There’s a reason they are keen to vaccinate against flu.
“Natural immunity”. Hmm. I had proper flu twice. It was shit and I was so unwell I thought I might die.
He’s done her a favour if he consented.

No idea

Op says She could go to school, but was not well100%.

WonderfulYou · 23/12/2021 20:51

Read the PPs - some people cannot have it for medical reasons.
Surely a double dose is worse than a single dose in these circumstances.
Obviously a lot kids need a double dose but we don’t know why the OP hadn’t given permission.

Tillymintpolo · 23/12/2021 20:58

Don’t believe it

UrsulaBursula · 23/12/2021 21:09

I’d be fuming

Regardless of her age- if she’s under 16; she’s a minor and at no legal age to consent to medical care.

Im not sure why other posters are side tracking this and suggesting because this is the flu vaccine - it’s okay.

You’re wrong. Under 16s can and do consent to medical care all the time.
TwittleBee · 23/12/2021 21:15

Is it an opt out one? At DS' school we had to opt out rather than sign consent for the flu spray.

If someone ‘cannot have it for medical reasons’ they wouldn’t have had the first dose for the school to give a double dose Confused
NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/12/2021 21:18

If it was given then it was probably done in error by a team short staffed due to covid sickness. Not ideal but I can’t get worked up because it’s done and I’ve always had dc vaccinated. Flu wiped me out for 2 weeks in my 20s and I was fit and healthy, I’d never wish that on a child. She won’t have natural immunity from flu as the strains change every year, as does the vaccine.
