Appendicitis??

My DD has abdominal pain 10 days ago(rolling around in pain) visit to walk in said her bowel sounded quite active & to expect vomiting as they thought it was a tummy bug. Pain settled later that day no vomiting.
Fast forward 8 days vomited 3 times bit of tummy ache.
Yesterday worsening pain moving to right side.
Today we've now had our 2nd visit to hospital(1st being last night) they admitted her for 6 hours today. Scan showed nothing but apparently wouldn't always with appendicitis. She's come home in worse pain than she went it but because they can't tell for sure they've sent us home again. Said I can observe her at home & bring her back if no better/worse.
Has anyone had similar experience?
I obviously don't want her to to have op unless it's necessary but just wondering how long they'll leave her like this until they do anything?

Can she put both her knees up to her chest without screaming?
Jump on the spot and touch your hand? Bend and touch her toes?

That seems to be how they judged my DD's was a bug and not appendix

Ds1 had similar symptoms last year and hospital suspected appendicitis. He actually had something called mesenteric adenitis which has almost identical symptoms to appendicitis

Was a very worrying time. Take your dd back if you are worried-we took ds to hospital 3 times over the course of 5 days and he was kept overnight on two occasions. Good luck and I hope your dd is better soon

Knuts she can't bend both knees up is very slow walking is bum shuffling up/downstairs can't bend down and is very tender where the appendix is. She's not vomitted since Sunday night & no runny number 2's.
She has a high pain threshold so I'm a bit worried she has more pain than she's actually showing.

Hedgehog she is getting distressed as she says the pain getting worse & she think because they've sent her home they don't believe her
They've said to bring her back if no better/worse but DD scared they will send her home again still in pain

I'd go back and say you're very worried about appendicitis. .

Ask her if she feels 'full'. That's how I felt felt, very ill and in pain most of the middle section of my tummy, belly button to right hand side. When pressed pain was intense.

They were worried that it was an ovarian cysts but I've since had them and then pain is completely different.

Thanks Ron. She's asleep at the minute after dose of brufen. (She never sleeps in day)If she's still in pain when she wakes I'll give them call as she's upto her limit of brufen in 24houts and can only have 1 more dose of paracetamol. She felt worse after having a little something to eat

We got sent home and da got much much worse and we then returned (they blamed us said we hadn't kept up with painkillers despite neither being due as we had literally gone home then returned half an hour later)
Ds was quite unwell for over a week in total and they were v unsure over the diagnosis for a while and then kept a v close eye on him

If you are worried in the slightest take her back. Better to be checked and all is well than not to

Sometimes it can take a while for a diagnosis. I'd be tempted to refuse to leave. She's clearly unwell.

How is she now? I do not know what the docs are suggesting it is, if it's not appendicitis?

This can flare up and go away but I'd say the way she is presenting, it may be acute and that needs to be treated ASAP.

I would go back, I'm sorry to worry you but I really think she needs checking again, I know it's late etc but her symptoms worry me.

Thank you. She's asleep at the moment so I'm leaving her be. I'm bunked on with her tonight so I can keep very close eye. If she wakes up in pain in the near future I'm out of painkillers to give her as in she's dosed out max in 24hrs. Then it will be trip back.
My instincts say it is appendicitis purely from where she says pain is. I don't believe its gastroenteritis(she was only sick on Sunday)constipation (she's been for number 2 every day& it would have shown up on scan today) I think it is slow at presenting itself.
I don't want her to have unnecessary surgery yet I don't want her to be in pain for days unnecessarily IYSWIM

DD's appendicitis pain wasn't to the left or right, it was in the middle. After lots of visits over two weeks to the GP and a+e, three lots of antibiotics and several urine tests-they said that they thought it might be her appendix because she screamed when they released pressure on her atomach (ie -they pressed down and it was ok, but when the hand was off, she screamed). She couldnt stand upright, didn't eat for 7-10 days, screamed when on the toilet, antibiotics did nothing. She said her back hurt and her bits hurt too. It was truly horrible :(

Ah roll on hope your DD fully recovered now? That sounds awful. I can't sleep listening out incase

Poor DC,I agree with previous posters,take her back if the pain is still continuing & getting worse.
Don't let them fob you off,you know your child & it's been a while since this started from what you've posted.
I hope she feels better soon.

All fine now but her appendix did burst (she screamed the house down) and she had to have emergency surgery-she was only 5.

Keep asking-I saw so many doctors and really thought (knew?!) something was wrong as she just wasn't like her normal self for so long--but they kept saying it was a kidney/urine infection as she said it hurt when she did a wee.

I have to say-the doctors we saw were all great and I don't blame them--I think appendicitis is horribly hard to diagnose.

I got dismissed for appendicitis a few years back was only when the doctor pressed hard on my right side and I broke his hand no bones were actually broken but I swear I heard him do a little scream ---- was I finally taken seriously, was rushed into theatre at midnight. Apart from cramp like pain in my side that was on and off for weeks sometimes intense but it always went away those were my only symptoms. Don't let them dismiss you, if you know something's wrong keep pushing.

This is just awful.
I don't know if this helps but I had my appendix out when I was around 8.
My mum picked me up from school as I was vomiting and had a high temperature and abdominal pain.
I went to my GP, who immediately thought it was my appendix and gave my mum a letter to give to hospital.
I went to Alder Hey Hospital(children's hospital) and I remember the doctor speaking to my mum.
Anyway to cut a long story short, he was asking for consent to perform a internal( bottom) as they thought my appendix had ruptured and this is how they would know straight away.
Yes, they were right, I was in theatre my mum said before my dad could get there from work.
All was good after surgery.
So OP maybe they don't think it's appendix.

Did they do blood tests Op? This can show whether there is an abnormal amount of inflammation. My DD didn't vomit but felt very sick. She also couldn't walk standing upright. She also did not jump through the roof when the pressed down. Her appendix did rupture but because it was tucked behind the bowel she did not present with 'normal' symptoms. If she is still in severe pain, take her back again - even if it is in the middle of the night.

How is she now?

We're back in hospital. Came in this morning after a restless night. Waiting to see senior surgeon. Had some stronger painkillers.

Ron she is 9. We're home again!! Saw surgeons. They say they don't think it is appendicitis. (But can't rule it out entirely) Given her stronger painkillers & agreed to look after her at home until Friday. If she's still in pain on Friday she's to go back in & they may then consider taking her to theatre for a look. Obviously if she becomes worse in the meantime I'd take her straight back. She's so fed up X

I went through something similar as a kid.

Actually it went on for years. I felt like no one believed me. I had an I actual cyst removed because they thought it was that and the surgeon said he couldn't even find my appendix so it deffo wasn't that

18 months later they decided to remove my appendix anyway to see if it helped and they found I had a huge appendix, not burst but wrapped around other organs, hiding almost.

I was the proudest patient-because they preserved it and it went to a medical school-it was the longest anyone had seen!

But the Drs must have believed me. It was called grumbling appendicitis in the end-although the surgeon had said he didn't believe there was such as thing before he found mine!

Persist. Let her know you're in her side, don't be afraid to go back. I really hope she gets better soon
