Chicken pox question. One of my DT's woke up this morning with blistery spots on his tummy, groin, bum and face. Pretty sure it is chicken pox. He seems fine with it not itching yet - does that happen later ?

What creams lotions are good to help wit irriation, itching etc ?
I have heard camomile teabags in a cool bath can help but I am otherwise clueless.
TIA Smile

If all scabbed and dry she is not a risk to others. You may have the odd stare or comment though.

Last wednesday i locked my front door, turned around and walked off, forgetting we have three steps. Landed hard on my ankle, which gave way, and I went down on my left side. About 3ft fall. I am 25 wks pg and thankfully had already strapped 2yo and 6yo in car.

DD came down with the pox that day, so I did not get it looked at until yesterday. I thought if you could weightbear it was not a break. It hurts still but not as bad as I thought a break would.

Sorry about the ankle ValiumQueen sounds like you have enough on your plate without that too.

Good to hear about minimavis, free at last. Enjoy the family and the festival this weekend.

We're still not all scabbed over here but not far off dabbing sudocrem furiously on the few remaining ones. However, some of DDs friends are coming over on Friday so that should help relieve the boredom for her. Hope she's all scabbed over by Saturday as they both have a day out with the gps planned.

ValiumQueen · 19/07/2012 08:09

Good to hear our babies are all making good progress. Hope you manage to have fun weekends. My foot is beyond sore, but I am coping. This too will pass. At least I have a sick note!

mum2twoloudbabies · 19/07/2012 08:17

That's good. We're onto naming spots now we're so bored of them. We've got some interesting names, zidzud and spuddles.

ValiumQueen · 19/07/2012 08:42

I might consider them for my unborn child.

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 19/07/2012 08:46

Handsfull may see you here next week with the other ones.
ValiumQueen I think you should, dd would be very proud Grin

The 'queen' spot (largest and first to be spotted) is called other head on my hand!

hypnotisingchickens · 19/07/2012 09:41

Looks like I'm joining your merry band - DS (15mo) is pox ridden. The first blister popped up on Monday evening, but wasn't really joined by any others until Tuesday evening, and only really started to get a proper covering last night. sigh I fear there is worse to come... Would I count Monday as day 1 do you think, or would it be when they started sprouting with gusto?

Thankfully he seems really well in himself - still eating and full of beans. I spoke to the doctor yesterday to confirm, and asked his advice about holiday - we're going to France on a ferry on Tuesday to then stay in a house in the middle of nowhere with no other people. He made noises to suggest that we shouldn't go because of risk of infecting people on the ferry - I'm a bit Hmm if I'm honest - Tuesday is still 5 days away and if I keep him in the pushchair on the ferry? I'll put it to the MN jury........

ValiumQueen · 19/07/2012 09:50

DDs queen spot is her other head on her forehead worst luck. I think that will scar.

Welcome hypno I am pretty sure MN jury would say not to go. Look at the recent camping thread. Chicken pox can be extremely dangerous to the vulnerable and can kill, although thankfully rare. Not just people who have not had it, but pregnant women and immunocompromised folk. I do not think keeping him under cover in a buggy would be sufficient, and if he is unwell, would be unkind to him. I would count day 1 as the day when they start popping up all over. DD is on day 7 and is still not fully scabbed. Hopefully he will be well by tuesday.

crappypatty · 19/07/2012 10:10

We are a poxy house, dd had them last week of June spent her birthday with them.

ds started with one spot on sun, five mon and I thought he was going to be mild. No such luck woke up Tue covered, in his mouth, ears, up his nose everywere. No sleep at all Tue night.

we have been using bicarb, calamine and piriton.

Part of the problem is that he has Autism and lots of sensory issues, will send dh for poxlin when he gets home from work, it sounds just the thing.

mum2twoloudbabies · 19/07/2012 14:09

Dd still not fully scabbed here either on day 8

ValiumQueen · 19/07/2012 14:51

Oh dear patty poor little fella. The Poxycin looks good, but is not cheap.

Leg in plaster, and finding it very hard to manage as foot keeps swelling. Grr!

mum2twoloudbabies · 19/07/2012 16:47

Poor ds patty, will make it harder with his autism. I just kept dd fully dosed on piriton and ibuprofen in the first few days. Oat baths because everything else was too stingy and finally landed on poxclin which was a god send because of how easy it was to apply, don't know that it's any better than other things but at least it was easy to apply. But it is expensive.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 19/07/2012 21:45

Aw patty and hypno sorry your dc have it too! I it's any consolation day 5 seems to be a turning point if that helps. :)

We are now on hols Grin
Ds is still blistery on 5-10 spots max. But we spent the morning in the car and SIL lives in the middle of nowhere so a forest walk with no other people was good! It was lovely to see ds smiling and being his normal self! Grin

The poxclin is fab and much less stingy than virasoothe I think.
We've also tried lush dream cream which he didn't complain at all about having put on. We also used the free sample of dream bath tonight. It was lovely in the bath but I think it made some of the scabs lift off onto his towel Shock it didn't seem to bother him but was a bit

Tomorrow is going to be a beach day - somewhere isolated ad then hopefully we can release him back into the wild on Saturday! Grin

Is anyone's else' dc off their food cos of the spots in their mouth? Ds will eat loads of white food but nothing else. Hmm

mum2twoloudbabies · 19/07/2012 21:59

Whenisit yes dd has been off her food. Ok today though so just a temporary blip (back to being eaten out of house and home!) Happy hols.

DDs first scab fell off tonight, one on her face and it left a big hole, I hope it won't scar because she has at least another 3 that size on her face and she hasn't scratched them at all and I have been very particular about treating them. Hideous illness why we don't vaccinate like other countries I do not know!

ValiumQueen · 20/07/2012 07:44

If there is a hole, a scar is likely. I don't think there is any guaranteed way of avoiding them sadly. It is horrible seeing your perfect baby with what could well be their first scar.

Vaccination has its downside too. Regular boosters are needed, and the older you get, the less effective they are, so you could get it later in life, so much worse, and if pregnant or immunosupressed, then outcome may not be so good. It is a right of passage from children, but I do wish they would develop better treatment, and have it available on prescription, as not everyone can afford £10+ on lotions.

mum2twoloudbabies · 20/07/2012 09:52

Unfortunately not her first scar she's a clumsy so and so but the others are hidden by hair. Sad about probable pox scars.

I know the issues in later life a friends husband nearly died from the pox (technically he did after the heart attack caused by the pox complications) and he was fit and healthy. Praying that it's not so dramatic if DH gets it.

Agree with the prescriptions though, the stuff that seems to work is so expensive.

ValiumQueen · 20/07/2012 10:15

Good lord mum2 that is awful. Poor family.

The scabs are falling off all over the place at the moment. I am slathering on the cream, and some are coming off with it. Gross. No holes yet, but the big one is yet to come off. There was one on her chest that I thought would leave a cavern, and it is just a dent so fingers crossed our babies will not be too potted.

Gonna start a poxicin fund for DS.

bumbleymummy · 20/07/2012 10:36

We had a couple of 'holey' ones when they first came off (on tummy) and they've healed up quite well so there is just a slight pinkiness that you can barely even notice. I think young skin heals quite well so don't worry just yet :)

mum2twoloudbabies · 20/07/2012 14:00

That's good news bumbleymummy.

Grin at the poxclin fund, I'm not sure I'll have much time to save up but you never know. Half of me wants to go and buy another tub now in preparation for next week, I'm so convinced it's all going to kick off again.

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 20/07/2012 19:29

Evening all Smile
My FB newsfeed is full of fellow Poxers - it really is doing the rounds.
Quick question - If 1 of your DC had recovered from cp, all spots scabbed over is it likely that the other DC will get them ? And is it ok to go out in public now ?

OP posts:
ValiumQueen · 20/07/2012 20:14

90% of people who come into contact with the virus will get it, so chances are the other child will. The incubation period is up to 3 weeks. I would go out while you can, but avoid new babies, pg women or ill folk whenever possible. If meeting friends tell them first so they can make up their own mind.

If scabbed over it is fine to go out but you will probably be glared at by folk who do not fully understand risks.

DD is almost scab free but I could not even take her out if I wanted to. Fecking leg!

Handsfullandinamuckingfuddle · 20/07/2012 21:03

Thanks Valium -we just wanted to pop to the park and for a walk in the woods. We have been playing out in the garden but need to get out now. I have not left the house in a whole week - apart from to put the bins out.

ValiumQueen · 21/07/2012 07:47

Morning fellow poxers! It looks like I will be leaving you as DD is now fine. Most scabs fell off overnight, and the queen spot is gone. No scars thankfully as far as I can tell.

For any newcomers, this is a summary of what I have learnt:

DD had a high temp 3 weeks before the first spot appeared. Over 40 but with no obvious cause.

She was grizzly and sleepy the night before the spots appeared. She woke in the night and said her head and ear were sore, and was scratching. She was also restless and moaning in her sleep.

Spots evident next morning. Just two, then joined by about 6 more. The spots quickly became blisters. I bought ViraSoothe and it was very helpful.

More spots the next day. ViraSoothe remained effective. I thought we were getting away with a light dose. I was wrong.

Day 3 and 4 were the worst, with high temp, poor sleep, dreadful scratching, and very very sore. ViraSoothe stung when applied, so used Sudocream which helped to soothe and dry up weeping areas.

More spots day 5 , but general improvement noted.

Now day 9 and I am very grateful it is passed.

Thank you for all the support. It has helped so much being able to compare symptoms and effective treatments, and just knowing we were not alone in this.

I would use Poxycin next time due to good reports here. I had no idea it existed before. I would also use piriton. Again I did not know you could give it to small children.

I wish you all the very best x
