powerpoint went well. Everyone is amazed at how well she is coping with it - went to matron in music as she felt lightheaded and dizzy and in my book anytime diabetic or not its not good to feel lightheaded and dizzy! a drink did it - bloods lower than normal - 3.1 don`t know what that means but apparently not good.

3.1 is technically hypoglycaemic but not too bad, most people would be unlikely to suffer much at that point and be fine after a drink or some sweets.

I've never ever been unable to treat a low blood sugar by myself in 13 years as a type1. Contrary to popular thinking, having hypos that make you pass out, etc. is not inevitable if you use insulin. Please tell your niece that! Smile

supermama212 · 10/12/2011 07:42

i will kicking! so 3.1 is practically hypoglycemic? she is better today i think - had a text last night from her saying that she has a cold but she feels better than she did!

3.1 is low but not drastically so...i've been 0.8 before now! Did the doctors explain to your sis about the honeymoon period? .. Your DN might find that she needs to reduce her insulin at first as if i remember rightly in the early weeks your pancreas releases some insulin before it gives up the ghost altogether

She is definitely taking it well....don't be surprized though if after a while she has a spell where she gets fed up with it all...you know, when the "novelty" has worn off..she might not and hopefully she won't, but i know that i did when i realized the finality of it all and that diabetes was here to stay

kickingking · 10/12/2011 16:15

Yes, I second what Paddy said about when the 'novelty' wears off and she realises this is forever. I have been there, several times over.

A 3.1 would usually have me grumpy and hungry. I've been 1.1 before and still functioning, albeit feeling pretty rough.

paddyclamp · 10/12/2011 20:27

Holy cow Kicking..if i was 1.1 i'd be hallucinating :)

kickingking · 10/12/2011 20:33

I know! And I've never ever passed out or needed help with a hypo .

Do you get 'hypo hangovers'? If I have a bad one (bad for me anyway) I feel like I have the worst hangover afterwards.

Brambleschooks · 10/12/2011 20:50

My ds gets hypo hangovers and gets very belligerent when he's low. It can be worrying when he's going into the ones, but I won't go into it here.

If your dn has a run of hypos it might be worth taking advice from the team on running her slightly higher for a day or so so that her liver can build back the stores it needs. Thats what we're advised for ds.

How is the carb counting?

Does she know Amelia lily has t1?

paddyclamp · 10/12/2011 22:10

yeh i always feel rough after a hypo..i can tell if i've been low in the night cos i have a headache!

i have hypo unawareness cos i've had type 1 for so long so quite often somebody has to make me drink lucozade, it makes me seem like i'm drunk! Ironically the one time i can feel my hypo symptoms is when i really am drunk!

kickingking · 10/12/2011 22:30

How long have you had Type 1? I'm just curious what a long time to have been Type 1 is. It's been thirteen years for me, I don't know if that's a long time or not.

paddyclamp · 10/12/2011 23:22

i was diagnosed in 1984! am 37 now!!

supermama212 · 11/12/2011 08:23

she knows amelia lilly is T1! she wanted her to win from the start - she left last night ( sorry to spoil!) carb counting going well , had another hypo and sis is taking her to clinic in the morning. I will tellyou more when i know more after the clinic

supermama212 · 12/12/2011 16:17

she went to the clinic today. they are pleased that she is managing it so well and they will see her every month. they are going to review if she needs seeing evrey month. they got a ketone meter and also she seems to have bad breath - told them and its the ketones on her breath - she was told at school by a teacher ! bit rude pointing that out!

OP posts:
Brambleschooks · 12/12/2011 18:31

Glad that clinic are pleased.

paddyclamp · 12/12/2011 19:58

the hospital were ok with her smelling of ketones?!

supermama212 · 14/12/2011 15:20

i don`t think they where! i am not 100% sure if they were or not.
she has to have the HPV vaccine tomorrow- will this interfere with her diabetes?

OP posts:
paddyclamp · 14/12/2011 19:15

I shouldn't think so...it might raise her BG slightly...has she had the flu jab? My levels were slightly raised a few days after that but not too bad

Brambleschooks · 14/12/2011 20:34

Hpv shouldn't interfere, but may raise levels a bit as paddy says. My ds has just had the fu jab so has gone to bed with his blood glucose sensor on and dosed up with nurofen.

supermama212 · 16/12/2011 15:26

it raised her levels.
she is nursing a sore arm but she wasn`t scared of the needle like her friends - she was a huge needle phobic so diabetes has cured that!

OP posts:
supermama212 · 18/12/2011 07:35

also, after the jab she was made to eat something. is that normal.
she is having the flu jab in the morning....

OP posts:
paddyclamp · 18/12/2011 19:52

Well they didnt make me eat anything after the flu jab...maybe it depends what time of day it was..i had mine at 9am so had just eaten

The needles they use for the flu jab etc are much bigger than insulin needles..pen needles are tiny :)

kickingking · 18/12/2011 21:43

Yeah, when I go for my flu jab or to have a blood test i often get told 'you'll be used to this!'

Um, no. The needles I use for insulin are 6mm long. It's really not the same. I am actually not needle phobic at all, but regular vaccination needles and insulin pen needles are really not comparable!

paddyclamp · 18/12/2011 21:54

As for vein blood...i HATE having it taken..much to the phlebotomist's surprize as i should be used to it!!! Noooooooo way!!! .. I still have to lie down to have it taken Blush

supermama212 · 19/12/2011 19:10

she was ok after her flu jab. just had a nap afterwards.

OP posts:
supermama212 · 19/12/2011 19:17

made no sense previous post.
Niece is coping well, although on friday she nearly fainted ( 1.2 and didn`t want to tell the teacher as they were doing a test!)
HPV went fine next in a months time for her so sometime in jan - hope she copes with that like she did with the first. Flu jab - will she need one yearley now?
