sounds like she's got to grips with it really quickly! i'm sure it took me weeks to get back to normal!!

Bunbaker · 07/12/2011 11:57

Thanks for letting us know. We are further north than that, but it sounds like DD's headteacher may be modelling the school on Sheffield Girls. I know a few pupils there though.

I hope you feel better soon.

supermama212 · 07/12/2011 15:24

is it penistone grammar school? heard that they were changing there days?
She is good and she is feeling better all ready. Thanks

Yes. They start at 8.20 am now.

supermama212 · 07/12/2011 16:37

thats ridiculous! Who can function at that insane time? i would be asleep on the desk let alone even thinking properly! i read bout it in barnsley chronicle when visiting my sister something about mugs or something silly ?

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 07/12/2011 17:25

They do finish earlier though - 2.50 pm. I admit that the early mornings are a killer. DD is out of the house at 7.35 am, and by Friday we are both shattered. She was offered a place at Wakefield GHS but we couldn't afford the fees. If she had gone there she would have had to leave at the same time in the morning, but not return home until 4.45 instead of the 3.15 she does now.

I wonder what the teachers think of the early teaching hours? 8.20 am is the first lesson - no registration or assembly first.

supermama212 · 07/12/2011 17:33

thats awful!
what year is your DD in? if she is at GSCE level how will she cope with exams at 8:20?
Dn is so much better but had a strop today according to sister - she`s fed up of being looked at when on her way to matrons . Her best mate goes with her at lunch time to matrons when she does bloods and insulin and is thinking about doing it in front of her form to show them what she has to do when she shows powerpoint - that is on friday - if she does i will be full of pride < happy auntie!>

She's in year 7. I hope your niece gets used to her new regime. I hope the Powerpoint show goes well and wish you a speedy recovery.

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 07/12/2011 17:53

No, thank goodness. Just a 10 minute bus journey.

One of her friends goes to school in Sheffield and is out of the house from 7.10 am to 5pm. Now that is a long day!

supermama212 · 07/12/2011 17:54

my niece gets on the bus from silkstone at 7:00 and is home by 5:15!!!! a long day for a diabetic x

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 07/12/2011 17:59

That is a long day and a fair distance to go to school. I wonder why she didn't go to Wakefield instead? There are quite a few children that travel from the Silkstone area to Wakefield for WGHS, QEGS and Silcoates.

supermama212 · 07/12/2011 18:11

i did wonder actually! She passed entry to sheffield but not wakefield i think.
She went to a normal primary but BIL wanted her to go to private school when that was over.
She has a clinic appotinment next week just a check up at barnsley general hospital - there unit is good from what i gather!

OP posts:
paddyclamp · 07/12/2011 18:18

It's good that she's being so open about it...i used to go to great lengths to conceal my diabetes..then again it's much more common nowadays!

supermama212 · 07/12/2011 18:23

she is not very shy paddy
also her nurse has recommended telling people - " if you have a hypo, there will be more people to help"

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 07/12/2011 19:22

Yes, the Wakefield exam is harder than the Sheffield one, but it is a good school anyway. Barnsley General is a good hospital. DD was born there and the support and care I received was fantastic.

paddyclamp · 07/12/2011 20:15

i wasn't shy either..apart from about my diabetes..i think part of it is to do with people's reactions...i'm a high school teacher and all the kids i teach are really great about it, it's the adults who get on my nerves with some of the stupid comments and misconceptions they have!

a few years ago i bumped into an ex-student and he told me that he'd managed to help someone who had a hypo cos he remembered what to do from my lessons!

supermama212 · 08/12/2011 16:55

wow paddy ! Barnsley is good - a few xmass ago i fell @ siss house and broke wrist they were super!

she is developing a cold :(
will this affect insulin dosage? sis wants to phone clinic - should she?? help please as they cannot be contacted after 9

OP posts:
kickingking · 08/12/2011 18:37

A cold shouldn't be a big problem. It us likely to make her blood sugars run a little higher, not much. She needs to take it easy, drink lots of fluids as she is new to insulin. Halls do sugar free decongestant type sweets. She can have lemsip but needs to be aware there is a but if sugar in them.

I'm Type 1 and basically take no notice of colds! Never been a big problem, but I think your niece should take it easy as she is so new to insulin.

paddyclamp · 08/12/2011 19:22

Her levels with be a little higher than normal..any sort of illness makes my levels go up...make sure she does lots of tests...don't panic if she's running a little high as for a day or two it won't have a big effect, so long as she's not over 20 or anything mega high like that

Don't panic and overtreat the high or she may go low

Brambleschooks · 08/12/2011 21:18

paddyclamp speaks wise words. Hope she gets well soon.
Has she been given a blood ketone meter (don't panic if not, but ask for one when they next speak to nurse).

Sounds like she's doing brilliantly at school.

paddyclamp · 08/12/2011 21:57

brambles is right about the ketone meter...def a good thing to have in case she gets a stomach bug at any point

supermama212 · 09/12/2011 16:13

right so when she visits clinic on monday ask for a ketone meter? Halls sugar free sweets super! sis is more worried than DN is !
