bramble how do they fix the pump to work?
oh in our family there is hyperthrodism (bil mum has it) can it be linked?
your ds is a similar age to dn then how does he cope?
DN saying and i quote " i don`t want to be the outsider and be bullied cause im different" she is worried that people will treat her differently

He copes brilliantly. His pump makes it very quick and easy to put insulin in for food when ever he wants to eat, rather than having to sort an injection. He has an animas 2020.

www.animas.com/support/animas-2020-insulin-pump

Have a browse when you're home from hozzy. Basically, the insulin goes in a little tube in the pump, which is like a tiny mobile phone. There is a little tube which carries the insulin and delivers it into a canula which sits just under the skin attached by a plaster. We change that every three days. Much easier than seven injections a day and poor levels, which is how it was before. It took a while to get our heads around pumping, particularly as it was attached to him. He disconnects for swimming.

The pump is great for teen girls and helps cope with the varying insulin needs from hormones.

Hopefully she'll feel a lot better. I hope she's got a good group of supportive friends.

have e-mailed link to sis. fingers crossed she will have 1 ! her friends are amazing she hopes she will not be considered an outcast some boys in her class are horrible. if they do anything to herthey will have 1 very p***d of auntie to deal with!

It's amazing how well hard sme kids will think she is, doing her testing, etc. there are some finger prickers which are more comfy - like the multiclix that accucheck do with one of their meters. We use that but with a different meter. It all makes a difference.

I hope school will keep a close watchful eye and deal quickly with any issues.

supermama212 · 05/12/2011 17:26

well she has asked to go back a day early! one boy in her class commented on fb (on her status) u r well hard poking needles into your fingers! do you eat in class? she laughed and replied no its not fun- it hurts and yea i do get to eat if i need to!!! she then added in small type in your face lol

... Children with diabetes uk have been a great support to those trying to get pumps. Hope she has no trouble though.

There's a good book/app called carbs and cals which is great for carb counting - its second nature to us now. If only I'd known about it whenhe was diagnosed, it would have solved so many things for me! It's early days fr her though, so they all need to adjust to the shock and be supported to sort things out.

I found this website helpful when I started to find out about carb counting:

www.leedsth.nhs.uk/sites/diabetes/food/CarbohydrateCountingRef.php

supermama212 · 05/12/2011 17:28

ok. will buy book 4 sis 4 xmas.

Brambleschooks · 05/12/2011 17:31

Bless her. I hope she has a good day. It's a shock to start with, but you work your way through it and it becomes second nature.

Brambleschooks · 05/12/2011 17:32

^^ sounds like she's more than able to deal with school :)

supermama212 · 05/12/2011 17:34

yes. she will get on fine i hope- she is very strong willed. her school are allowing her to do her injections herself in lessons & at matrons at lunchtime - in lessons in emergencies and she has permission to eat lunch in form time. her tutor rang her mum and has said if he can do anything at all to say so as he is diabetic and will be able to help in form & lessons

Brambleschooks · 05/12/2011 18:20

Wow, how lovely of her tutor. Ds' deputy head at primary was t1 and so helpful too.

supermama212 · 05/12/2011 18:59

i agree! she is in bed - she is "napping" says sis - watching tv in her room more like it.
will update later. dr doing rounds now so see what he says about me. x

no sense - last post.
i am going home in the morning - doctor is pleased that i am better than i was not 100% but better.
Niece is going to school tomorrow and she just came to visit me! i showed her this thread and she wants to thank you all for being so kind and supportive.
but a classmate on fb has posted " oh no the contaminated freak is coming back - everyone stay away i repeat stay away" i want to do something i will regret to the little person (what i think is a bit to rude for you lovely mn`s)

I can only recall one incident when someone was horrible to me for having diabetes...i was in year 7 and some girls in the year above gave me a hard time and called me aids girl etc :( .....most people are fine and really supportive

I think that after a few months things became more normal, and it is totally totally normal to me now - there are times when it's a bit of pain but most of the time it's just there.

Loads of people rave about the pump...personally i don't fancy it as i would have a cannula fitted 24/7 and that doesn't appeal..but i have good control on multiple daily injections so have complete freedom really, apart from having to do my insulin shots

is she on novorapid?

Brambleschooks · 05/12/2011 20:54

Keep getting better. Any possibility of a screenshot of that comment being sent to school? Unless it is incredibly weird pre teen humour? It is officially a disability... Do encourage her parents to look into claiming Dla for here - there are other things she would be entitled to too, due to her need to a watchful eye on her.

Do encourage mum to join the cwd mailing list (on a gmail account specially for it) when she's ready, if she'd like any support or wants to share new found expertise.

Sounds like your dn will be very capable, you must be so proud of her.

paddyclamp · 05/12/2011 21:45

With respect, i disagree about it being a disability...i know kids with type 1's parents get DLA in case of needing to keep an extra eye on them...but i refuse to say i have a disability Confused

paddyclamp · 05/12/2011 21:47

wasn't meaning to be nasty by the way...i guess maybe i am a bit sensitive about it deep down :(

supermama212 · 06/12/2011 06:48

My DN goes back to school today! I will update u all - she promises to text me (probs won`t though)!

It sounds like you and your family are having a rough time of it at the moment. I hope that you will all be well enough to enjoy Christmas.

Sending you some get well soon vibes.

"her school have form time ( registration) at lunchtime. its staggered but her form are second for lunch"

That sounds like DD's school. DD is now on the second lunch and often comes home hungry because all the good food has gone. Do they live in South Yorkshire?

Brambleschooks · 06/12/2011 07:17

Paddyclamp- totally get what you mean re disability, we are the same re our son, however in the case of people being obstructive with him it's useful to have it up our sleeves. I would not say to him that he's disabled.

Hop she has a great day today. X

supermama212 · 06/12/2011 15:23

yes , what school is it? bun
she is v pleased - she today got in for lunch early with her dinner pass - they have given her one so nothing happens. she also has a medical pass, but that has not been used yet.
people say she is well cool injecting herself - in spanish though, she had a hypo and the teacher shouted at her when she started eating - don`t think she has been briefed. she knows now after seeing consultants letter.

supermama212 · 06/12/2011 15:51

she has just phoned me to tell me all about her day back.
" i had a lovely day and all my friends were very kind and caring." "that boy who was mean on my status apologized after i threatened to report him" " everyone has been great - my form tutor is diabetic and he has asked me to make a powerpoint to show our form, he says he will do a week where we all have to do a demonstration about something nobody else knows for example someone could be anemic and could do a powerpoint about that he said that as i was getting strange looks eating my hobnobs!"
"I am glad i went back today"
am overjoyed that she has had a good day!!!
