when i was in year 7 i got some s* from a girl in the year above...she started calling me aids girl and druggy etc ..... my brother tipped a bottle of lucozade over her head...she never bothered me again!!!!!!!!!!

has she told her head of year?

accidentprawn · 10/03/2012 08:15

Sis rang up on wednesday but he was ill and hasnt been in all week. he will ring her on monday. its not fair though, would they like it? being bullied for a health problem that isnt there fault?

your brother did the right thing!!

accidentprawn · 12/03/2012 16:45

the HOY rang up today and has said he will keep a close eye on DN to ensure nobody bullies her.
He is writing to the families of the girls in question.

paddyclamp · 12/03/2012 20:52

as i said i only got hassled the once...no normal person would stoop so low as to give someone grief about a medical condition...i'm sure it will blow over and the HOY will sort it out

Oblomov · 12/03/2012 21:15

Sorry to hear about he bullying. never had any of that myself. Glad HOY is taking it seriously. that is atleast re-assuring.

Oblomov · 12/03/2012 21:19

Has she got a diabetic buddy yet? I remember when I met mine. Her name was Marie. Oh I had the happiest happiest times when I was with Marie. She understood everything I went through, and me her. It is the best thing ever when you have some who 'gets' you totally.

paddyclamp · 12/03/2012 21:31

did you go to diabetes camp Oblomov?

Oblomov · 13/03/2012 07:44

Twice Paddy. Were two of the best weeks of my life.
The first one, I was very young. not sure how old I was, but 6? Got on the train from Plymouth,Devon to London. Kissed my mum and off I went with barely a backwards glance. It was mum who was petrified! On my own practically. Sat on the train. with the local diabetic group. off we went up to waterloo. met other groups. off we went to the camp. I liked being around others the same as me. without having to think about every little calculation of when how, snack, balancing insulin, swiming sports etc. Everyone was the same and everything was calculated for us. Twas fab. They taught me how to do my own injections. I was so pleased. so proud.I was away a week, and phoned my mum twice, as did everyone. I didn't even miss my mum, dad or brothers. and being such a family child, that was odd, but it was just becasue I was having such a good time.

The second time was the same, but I ws just a young teenager. we talked about things like honing in on catching our warning signs earlier.

Inbetween those. I went to the local diabetic group. This is where i met Marie. Bless her, they were poor as anythign and had holes everywhere, shoes, coats. She was one of 6 and her brothers and sisters all had to come to all the events too. apparently, they didn't want Marie to think that she was 'special' Hmm. So all her brothers and sisters ran off to the theme parks etc, and it was always just her and me. We only met twice a year. for a christmas party and a day trip out each spring/summer. This is where Marie and I went as part of a huge group to local theme parks etc for the day. Some of my happiest times.
I only met her twice a year and for over a month beforehand, I was so excited, I couldn't wait. Funny , that sounds now. But I really did fel like that at the time.

What about you Paddy? Did you have similar ?

accidentprawn · 13/03/2012 15:39

she has got a diabetic buddy. they don`t attended the same school though. she is a lovely girl ( the buddy) and DN has someone who is going through the same thing although she has been diagnosed for longer.

paddyclamp · 13/03/2012 21:16

i'm still in touch with my buddy...she's great and we share a lot..but she was diagnosed as a baby which we both agree is probably easier cos she never had to learn to accept the changes the diabetes brings initially!

yeh i loved diabetes camp...i remember going to one in my teens where they had all the carb counts for booze stuck on posters on the walls! :)

Oblomov · 13/03/2012 21:40

Glad she's got a buddy, prawn. Agree with Paddy. As i was diagnosed at 1.5, I have never known anything else, and so it is so much easier. but my poor mum. whereas , your poor poor niece. I meaqn 12. 12 has to be the worst age EVER to be diagnosed. surely. so much going on. hormones. and she hasn't even got the resentment stage yet. I resented and hated my diabetes for quite a few years, in my early teens. poor niece. such a terrible age to 'get it'.

accidentprawn · 14/03/2012 17:37

what age do you think she will get to the resentment stage and begin to 'rebel'?
If she had been diagnosed when she was younger, this would probably be so much easier - it would be normal.

paddyclamp · 14/03/2012 22:27

i'm not sure it's an age as much as the length of time with diabetes...i'd prob say a year in..at first everyone reaches out, shows you how much they care etc which is lovely..but of course life goes on...and it's not like people forget but the move on if that makes sense!

i was in year 3 when i got diagnosed...so on the positive i didn't have all the issues that teens have to deal with...but the flip side was that when you're at junior school being told you aren't allowed any sweets (which is how is was in the 80s!) is really tough on a kid who isn't quite old enough to accept it

i guess for a baby /toddler it's a nightmare on the parents as in getting them to eat properly!!!

one thing i will say tho...a few months ago i had my DS to the hospital with lumps in his neck....he was given the all clear thankfully but i had convinced myself he had hodgkins lymphoma or leukaemia...i rememeber being in the waiting room and thinking if they were to come out and say it's diabetes i'd have thrown a party if he just had that rather than cancer!!!!!

accidentprawn · 15/03/2012 15:51

I like the idea of a party paddy when she was diagnosed, sis was really worried that something was wrong with her kidneys ( she was weeing a lot) and she was so relieved when she found out it was diabetes!

accidentprawn · 18/03/2012 08:03

How are you paddy ?

accidentprawn · 19/03/2012 16:01

I found out today that one of my colleagues is diabetic! He had never told anybody and you wouldn`t know to look at him. he is handsome!
He collapsed in his lesson Shock

paddyclamp · 19/03/2012 20:02

Hi prawn! I'm ok ta a bit stressed put cos moving house this week....what happened to the guy, was he ok?

accidentprawn · 20/03/2012 15:53

He was admitted to hospital and told to rest. He is of for the rest of this 1/2 term. I think they have upped his insulin from the e-mail he sent round

paddyclamp · 20/03/2012 16:20

By eck he must have been pretty high to collapse! How old is he about?

accidentprawn · 20/03/2012 16:34

i think he is in his 30`s. I have never asked. It was very scary. They had the ambulance in!

kickingking · 20/03/2012 16:44

Oi, why is it suprising that the diabetic colleauge is handsome? I'm diabetic and I'm fucking gorgeous! Grin

accidentprawn · 20/03/2012 16:51

Its not suprising hes just taken! so any feelings are secret!

kickingking · 20/03/2012 16:57

Ah, I read it as 'you wouldn't know he's diabetic because he is handsome'. I often get told 'you look too healthy to be diabetic' - I think they usually mean too thin!

I will add my nastiest comment to the conversation about the bullying - I was diagnosed at 20 so you would think I would escape bullying from peers. Afraid not, aged 21, a friend's boyfriend told me ''people like you disgust me, if you were a dog you'd be put down'
Shock

accidentprawn · 20/03/2012 17:02

that is horrid. You are who you are and nobody can tell you otherwise.

kickingking · 20/03/2012 17:12

I've had lots of misinformed advice and tales of people's blind limbless great aunties, which I am just Hmm about. Like your colleague, I don't usually tell people these days. That was probably my only truly nasty comment.
