Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

It always seems to be cupcakes with a basic vanilla sponge recipe and then we decorate with different coloured buttercreams. I also invested in a gadget that takes the middles out so we then fill them with different things, the kids love picking the fillings. So far we've had, jam, lemon curd, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce and even sweets like smarties and jelly tots.

If I'm in a real hurry then we make Nigella's Store Cupboard Chocolate Orange cake, which you make by melting butter and chocolate together in a saucepan over a very low heat, then turning off the heat and adding jam/marmalade, eggs, sugar and flour together. Shove it in a cake tin in the oven and Bingo!. Foolproof and no whisking.

Or we do oat and golden syrup cookies, again melt the butter and golden syrup on the job, then turn off the heat and add sugar, flour, oats and seeds or chopped nuts. Let it cool, form into small balls and cook. Crumbly but quick, delicious and relatively nutritious for lunchboxes.

(very quick)Chocolate chip cookies
small bag ofchoc chips
1 tbsp golden syrup
6oz self raising flour
4 oz butter
4oz soft brown sugar

Using a hand mixer mix up the sugar and butter until light and creamy then beat in golden syrup using wooden spoon. then add half flour and choc chips and mix well. add remaining flour mix well . divide into small ball should get around 12 for the mix. place each ball on to a try i flatten then a little into a circle but not to much that they are super thin as that wouldnt work. then cook for around 12 minutes on around 160-180 depending on your cooker. once they are a nice golden colour take out and put on wire rack to cool. These are simple and easy for the kids to make, plus they taste great.

Since he was eighteen months old, my son has helped with making the Christmas cake. Now his favourite thing is to make flapjacks. In the first few weeks of DS2's life, I learnt that flapjacks can be made in between cluster feeds, very handy for 1-1 time with elder son!

Rocky road is our favourite, but the boy always eats the marshmallows before we put them in

melonpanini · 10/09/2016 00:04

I always find it easy to make shortbread cookies with my daughter, or scones. They're easy to make and don't take too long to make or bake and reasonably healthy.

BellaWella86 · 10/09/2016 23:45

Simple Rice Crispy cakes with added marshmallows and treacle.

We love to make the old favourite, butterfly cakes, using the reliable BBC recipe. It always gives brilliant results and the children love them.

fuzzywuzzy · 11/09/2016 05:11

Nigella's triple chocolate cookies. It's a very straightforward recipe and my youngest even bakes it herself when she fancies baking, we've made them for charity bake sales and they're always the first to sell out.

Another banana bread maker here!

DS and also make (bear with me, sounds disgusting but promise they're delicious) sugar free avocado chocolate chip cookies

Cheese and tomato pizza swirls

Make pastry from 4oz SR flour
2 oz fat (we use willow butter)
Salt and pepper if you wish
Rub together til like breadcrumbs
Add 4tbsp water and form a ball

Roll out into a rectangle
Squirt tomato and garlic purée on and paint it all over
Cover with grated cheese
(You can add anything you like here really)

Roll up like a giant long sausage
Cut into two kid finger width pieces and place on a baking tray circle side up.

Bake for 10-12 mins at 180 degrees

My kids love this, it's really messy with all the flour you need to stop it sticking to the worktops! I tend to make it at the dining table which is much bigger and saves them standing on chairs (and falling off)

.

PlaymobilPirate · 11/09/2016 07:57

Cupcakes!
Weigh 2 cracked eggs then match Sr flour, caster sugar and butter to the weight of them. Chuck in some vanilla essence and a tiny bit of baking powder and bake on gas mark 5.
We freeze them to pop in ds' lunchbox - he loves them.

Bellroyd · 11/09/2016 09:44

Microwave mug cakes - just a standard sponge recipe and throw in a few raisins /sultanas. Or, use a suet-based recipe for a lovely spotted dick with lashings of home-made custard. Great for a great teatime treat, maybe preceded by a crumpet or two

mynellie · 11/09/2016 12:32

we bake quite a bit of stuff
we love to cook cookies
also flapjacks (a real favourite )
And the most favoutite of all a Lime & Chocolate Cheesecake
Which is a biscuit base (we like to use ginger snaps)
The dissolve a lime jelly in quarter pint of boiling water
Melt 2 bars of economy basic chocolate (we use plain)
Add a small carton of double cream to the chocolate
then add to the cooled jelly mixture and pur over the cooled biscuit base and leave to cool in the fridge
You can add lime juice and zest to the jelly mixture if like us you are a lover of lime
We serve it up after dinner and always goes down a treat and is very easy for the kiddies to make with help

We need to have gluten free foods in our household and so we quite often bake our own gluten free bread in the bread maker . It's easy to do and comes out lovely and squishy.Obviously it's irresistible when warm and barely lasts more than a day. But it's so much tastier than shop bought and you can add seeds or flavours, anything you want really.
