Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

Simple chocolate chip buns or sultan buns or coconut buns 4oz sugar 4oz butter 2 eggs 4oz s-r flour and then whatever you want to add. Simple and effective! Anything more complicated I don't usually attempt with my dd but she is only 2.5 so she tends to just stick her fingers in stuff and throw things about!

SweetPeaPods · 25/08/2016 15:34

Betty Crocker chocolate brownie mix. Dairy free so both DC can eat them.
They enjoy opening the packet and mixing the egg and the oil etc then pouring into the tin.

Hadagutsful · 25/08/2016 15:38

Banana bread - we know it off by heart and frequently have bananas that need using!!

3 overripe bananas, mashed (any of them can do that!)
360g SR flour
80g-100g caster sugar (depending on how "healthy" I'm trying to be)
50g butter melted
1 egg, beaten (4 year olds favourite bit)
125ml milk

Sift and stir all dry ingredients. Make a well, add all wet ingredients except banana. Mix. Then mix in mashed banana. (Sometimes we throw in some chocolate chips [unless it's a "healthy" loaf!] Grin) Chuck in loaf tin. Bake in warm oven (160ish) for around 50 minutes. Scoff while warm. Assembling it takes literally minutes and it's yummy.

TheSpottedZebra · 25/08/2016 15:40

Our go - to recipe is also the basic bun one that PP ,envious - the 4442 one scaled up or down.

We also make cornflake cakes or rice crispie cakes quite a lot too. Yum.

TheSpottedZebra · 25/08/2016 15:41

Oops. That was meant to read that PP mentions

We love baking and eating it.

Current favorite is Brownies, from the BBC Good food website, so I won't plagarise it. Suzywong 's brownie recipie from MN is also delicious, and makes a smaller batch. It earned my brownies a reputation.

Treadlightly · 25/08/2016 16:04

We love banana and chocolate cake & like previous posters we always have loads of bananas to use up!
I like the Mumsnet recipe and we ALWAYS add loads of chocolate chips. It always works and always tasted delicious.
I have a couple of little helpers who are very good at mashing the bananas for me :)
Here's the link to the recipe...

My DC love making ice cream cone cakes - I have a rack to allow us to use proper pointy cones which is fun. Basic sponge recipe: 1 egg, 2oz flour, 2oz sugar, 2oz butter. They also like adding choc chips or raisins. The decorating can be messy but fun.

forkhandles4candles · 25/08/2016 16:59

Gingerbread men/people. Even if they come out terrible, it is fun forming them and seeing how they turn out.

gillyweed · 25/08/2016 17:01

Pastry! Usually sweet shortcrust, they help me find the ingredients, weigh and mix, then I usually make a pie or a tart (they're small and their attention span is short!). They then get the leftover pastry to shape and use cutters, practice knife skills etc.

DD loves baking mainly because she likes eating raw cake mixture not the finished cake so much. Her current favourite is Mary Berry chocolate cake - apart from when she tried licking the cocoa powder mixed with water (it was cool!) which she thought horrible.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 25/08/2016 17:09

Jam tarts. I doubt anyone needs a recipe for that but there's one here:
www.bakingmad.com/strawberry-jam-tarts-recipe/

My favourite because we are guaranteed to have the ingredients, so it's always an easy way to kill a bit of time.

OhHolyFuck · 25/08/2016 17:17

My 2 love baking bread and experimenting with different things to try inside it
A particular favourite was the beer bread they made for their dad

3 cups flour (sifted)
3 teaspoons baking powder (omit if using Self-Rising Flour)
1 teaspoon salt (omit if using Self-Rising Flour)
1⁄4 cup sugar
1 (12 ounce) can beer
1⁄2 cup melted butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Mix dry ingredients and beer.
Pour into a greased loaf pan.
Pour melted butter over mixture.
Bake 1 hour, remove from pan and cool for at least 15 minutes

FlopIsMyParentingGuru · 25/08/2016 18:18

My two love Delia's good old fashioned rock cakes. It's a forgiving recipe and can handle the enthusiastic throwing in of raisins and generous sprinkling of sugar topping.

It wasn't terrible either when DD insisted on adding the chocolate drops she had spied in the cupboard too.

loosechange · 25/08/2016 19:26

I should never have scrolled back through this thread. Now I want to bake even more, starting with the rock cakes above.

There's a recipe on the net for brown butter chocolate chip cookies that's top of the lest, followed by the version filled with Nutella.

Bubblebloodypop · 25/08/2016 20:32

Pancakes with a multitude of toppings Grin

katienana · 25/08/2016 20:34

We love making gingerbread people. We have a few different colours of writing icing that we use to decorate when they're cool, my 3 year old absolutely loves this bit - we make them to look like each member of the family. We sometimes freeze half the dough if we don't want a big batch.

Zebee · 25/08/2016 20:46

Gingerbread usually in the shape of dinosaurs but also like making letters and numbers.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/08/2016 20:53

Our very best of all chocolate muffins

Dry ingredients:

1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup vanilla sugar
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

Mix together in a large bowl.

Wet ingredients:

1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup sunflower oil
1 large egg

Beat together in a jug, then pour into the dry ingredients and stir to roughly combine. Don't worry about lumps. Put paper cases into a 12-hole muffin tray and divide the mixture as evenly as possible between them. Bake at 180°c for 15 minutes, then remove to a rack to cool.

iklboo · 25/08/2016 20:59

Coconut & strawberry flapjacks
Soda bread (we make our own butter too)
Salted caramel cupcakes
Banana & choc chip loaf
Cheese & onion pie / pasties

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 25/08/2016 21:12

Banana bread and gingervread men are favourites here. The last thing we made was a rice crispies tray with melted chocolate toffees in (who knew there was a way to use up all the leftovers toffees in quality street!)

We also enjoy going in charity shops and buying second hand cook books and trying out what recipes we fancy - the more retro the book the more fun it is!

Polkadot1974 · 25/08/2016 21:16

Brownies and flapjacks here or chocolate muffins from a Moosewood recipe book from the US I got as a gift 15 years ago

purplepandas · 25/08/2016 21:16

Ah, we made it today actually. It's banana bread with blueberries. Yummy and easy to make.

DinosaursRoar · 25/08/2016 21:20

oh I bake a lot with my 2!

Banana bread is a big hit (giving the toddler the overripe bananas and the potato masher is aways messy fun!)

Basic scones

Basic muffins - advantage that nothing needs creaming so can just be stirred together, then whatever dried fruit we've got thrown in.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 25/08/2016 21:24

Banana cake or chocolate banana cake.

Whisk together 150-200g soft light brown sugar and 2 large eggs. Mash in 3 over-ripe bananas. Mix in 300g plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1-2 tsp cinnamon, a couple of dessert spoons of cocoa if wanted and a handful of ready oats. Mix in 150g melted butter. Bake for about an hour at 160C.
