Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

Simple fairy cakes have always been a favourite of ours; you can add lots of different flavours to them and they are great for decorating too!

snare · 20/09/2016 12:56

banana muffins are our favourites to make :)

GeorgeW78 · 20/09/2016 13:28

Fairy cakes with a secret jammy centre always go down well although sometimes the jam comes out the bottom of the cake & is left on the paper case but we don't care! Mini lemon drizzle cakes are another favourite :)

marylegs23 · 20/09/2016 14:20

fairy cakes or choc chip cookies

MrsKat · 20/09/2016 14:35

We (myself and my 9yr old son)love making cookies from scratch.
We try most things in them, including left over bits of Easter Eggs, but the old favourite of smarties still hits the mark every time!

wef1984 · 20/09/2016 14:57

We love to make gooey flapjacks

iamsaranna · 20/09/2016 19:45

Basic flapjacks are always a hit with mine, not too messy either!

piggypoo · 20/09/2016 19:47

We make little pizzas, as you can always find some tomatoes, cheese and herbs kicking round in our fridge! This amount makes 3 little pizzas.

150g tomatoes
Salt and pepper
3 mini pitta breads
55g grated cheese
Any sliced sausage or meat or olives if you want to add, if veggie, leave meat out.
Olive oil for drizzling
Handful of fresh basil

Pre-heat oven to 200C
Season tomatoes with salt and pepper and spread on pitta breads. Sprinkle over your cheese and meat and olives, (if using)
Drizzle each little pizza with a little olive oil, place on a baking sheet, cook in oven until the cheese is golden and melted.
Serve on plates with a little of the basil sprinkled over the top!

Easy-peasy!

We love to make daddy's favourite - Shortbread
250g x butter (or margarine), 100g x caster sugar, 250g x plain flour, 1 x tsp vanilla essence
Preheat the oven to 180c / g4
Cream the butter and the sugar together with a mixer until it’s nice and fluffy
Add the vanilla essence, sieve in the flour and mix well
Roll out mixture, until it’s about 1cm thick
Cut out your chosen shapes and place onto a baking tray
Bake for 10 – 12 minutes or until they just begin to harden
Sprinkle a little sugar over the top, leave to cool and enjoy!

lionheart · 20/09/2016 20:44

Vanilla cupcakes with butter icing and everything you can lay your hands on for a topping.

banana bread

zippedup · 20/09/2016 22:49

it has to be cup cakes with lots of icing and sprinkles or chocolate cornflake cakes!

Bonfirebabyandme · 20/09/2016 23:02

Cake pops! We love making (and eating them). We use a basic cake recipe 115g sugar marg sf flour and 3 eggs, mix up and pop it in our cake pop moulds. The best bit for my little one is the decorating. We use chocolate or candy melts and sprinkles, they look so lovely (and messy) and good as little favours and thank yous for family. Just don't expect them to look edible haha!

Jocelynne123 · 20/09/2016 23:09

For savory food we like to make our chicken and cheese pasta bake because it is very gooey. And for sweet we like making cookies and fairy cakes. We have just started making the slimming world quiche too xx

TiggersAngel7774 · 20/09/2016 23:46

My son is autistic so very visual and likes to know what end result is . So he enjoys the packet mixes wtih cartoon characters

jamielmdjs · 21/09/2016 00:03

we are very much savoury bakers. Homemade pizza is a great activity with the kids and the end results is a good way to get some veg in them.

Dough - 300g strong bread flour, 300g tip 00 flour, 375ml water, 7g yeast, 2 tbsp olive oile, 2 tsp salt, 2 tsp sugar.

toppings are your own choice but a light mozarella, tomato passata then onion, pepper, ham, chicken works for us.

Nicole1067 · 21/09/2016 00:36

We love making banana bread, gingerbread cookies and sugar cookies with sprinkles! :)

Topsyturvy01 · 21/09/2016 07:19

Crispy chocolate cakes - just mix melted chocolate with rice crispies or cornflakes, put into little cake cases and leave in the fridge to set. Yummy!

ShatnersBassoon · 21/09/2016 07:22

Biscuits for an Adventure. They're in a book by a Bake Off contestant - Miranda Brown I think. They're so easy and quick, and delicious. And you don't need to have remembered to get the butter softened before you start Smile

ikkle87 · 21/09/2016 11:02

we make lemon curd cake a lot which is a basic sponge mix but substitute one egg for a jar of lemon curd and when cooked prick with a skewer and pour a mix of sugar and lemon juice over

cpconnolly · 21/09/2016 13:53

we love to improvise cupckaes with what we have in the house

or bake shortbread and use decorating icing pens to let the kids imagination go free

dizzytina · 21/09/2016 15:02

rocky road for us. Its just so simple to make and I let our daughter pick what she wants to put in it. We always have the basic ingredients in so theres no need to run to the shops. We made some at weekend and she added haribo sweets :-).

Clementine Cake is quick and easy, never goes wrong, and gets even better with keeping - if it gets the chance! It's suitable for coeliacs too, just be sure to use gluten free baking powder:
approx 375g clementines, microwaved in water for 10 mins
6 eggs, beaten
225g sugar (I use Xylitol sweetener instead)
250g ground almonds
1 teasp baking powder
Preheat the oven to gas mark 5/190ºC/375ºF, grease and line a 8" springform tin. Whizz the whole clementines (skin and all) in a food processor, add everything else and mix. Pour into tin and bake for one hour, cover if the top browns too quickly. Serve cold or warm, with a dollop of creme fraiche. Or cover with chocolate ganache. Either way, enjoy!

Butterfly buns and Rice Krispie treats....because they remind me of my own childhood! Also like making anything Betty Crocker Blush lazy! I'm not the greatest in the kitchen but we have fun doing it even though she's only little. Simple things are better with a toddler this age.
