Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

One of the first things I taught ds was a basic sponge recipe.

125g self raising flour, caster sugar and soft butter to two eggs. Scale up as needed.

We also make a no bake tray bake that they love. Smash biscuits, add hot choc powder. Mix with melted butter and press into tin. Chill while we make minty butter icing. Use twice the amount of icing sugar to butter, add green food colouring and peppermint essence. Spread on the top of biscuit base. Once cold pour melted chocolate on the top. Minty Aero no bake tray bake! Yum!

weve just started making toffee apple fudge cake from the bbc recipe website we have made it twice and love it !

We love making (& of course, eating!) pineapple upside down cake! All the joys of a sponge cake, with the added treat of laying the pineapple rings in pretty patterns across the inside of the tin! Best recipe we found, & which we now always use was on the BBC Good Food Website. The secret is adding the tinned pineapple juice to the mixture - gorgeously sweet!

For topping;
50g Softened Butter
50g Light Brown Sugar
Pineapple rings in syrup

For the cake;
100g Softened Butter
100g Golden Caster Sugar
100g Self-Raising Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
2 eggs

Method
Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. For the topping, beat the butter and sugar together until creamy. Spread over the base and a quarter of the way up the sides of a 20-21cm round cake tin. Arrange pineapple rings on top.

Place the cake ingredients in a bowl along with 2 tbsp of the pineapple syrup and, using an electric whisk, beat to a soft consistency. Spoon into the tin on top of the pineapple and smooth it out so it’s level. Bake for 35 mins. Leave to stand for 5 mins, then turn out onto a plate. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.

Ginger bread people are the best and fairy cakes

YerTiz · 04/09/2016 08:58

Flapjacks - good old fashioned golden syrupy flapjacks. Or sometimes we add cocoa powder to make chocolate flavoured ones.

DC also love making (or rather the cutting out of) biscuits - a basic butter biscuit with some lemon rind added, or ginger.

We love baking ordinary cupcakes with melted cadburys chocolate on top, topped with smarties and sprinkles, so tasty. My son also loves helping me make savoury pies like minced beef & onion or chicken and ham, here's hoping he turns into a little Jamie Oliver!!

beckyinman · 05/09/2016 13:59

Rocky road - something where we can just chuck in everything we have in the cupboard, mix with a bit of melted butter and cocoa and cover in melted chocolate.

helly27 · 05/09/2016 14:09

Cupcakes as there are so many varieties and so many ways to top them

Lucyeleven · 05/09/2016 16:39

Both mine children love making cheese scones, easy to make and relatively healthy in terms of cakes!

ditsygal · 05/09/2016 16:48

Fridge Cake has become a firm favourite to make with my 3 year old. No oven cooking needed! We make it with 300g chocolate, 300g biscuits, 100g raisins, 100g butter and 100g golden syrup. Melt the chocolate, syrup and butter in a pan then crush the biscuits (my 3 year old loves to have a go at bashing them with the rolling pin!) and stir in the biscuits and raisins into the chocolate mix and then set in a square tin lined with clingfilm in the fridge.
So yummy too!

mishknight · 05/09/2016 21:53

We love to make fairy cakes which my little girl helps me bake and then I let her be in charge of decorating them

Chocolate brownies from the Hummingbord bakery cookbook - delicious!

gamerwidow · 06/09/2016 13:04

Banana muffins are always a hit. They're so easy to do and they freeze well so you don't have to eat them all at once.

My Son loves baking our Dorset apple cake especially during the autumn when we can make it with apples grown in our very own Dorset garden

Ingredients-
225g self-raising flour
2 tsp ground cinnamon
115g unsalted butter, diced and chilled, plus extra for greasing
115g light brown sugar
1 large egg, beaten
6-8 tbsp milk
225g Apples
, peeled, cored and diced
100g sultana
2 tbsp demerara sugar (optional)

Method-
Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4. Grease and line a deep 20cm cake tin with baking parchment.

Mix the flour and cinnamon together in a large bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour using your fingers, until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the light brown sugar. Beat in the egg followed by 6 - 8 tbsp of milk – you want to achieve a smooth, thick batter.

Add the apples and sultanas and mix to combine. Scrape the batter into your prepared tin and gently level out. Sprinkle over the demerara sugar and bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes or until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.
Allow to cool in the tin for 15 minutes and then carefully turn out onto a wire rack to cool further. Best served still warm with a little custard. DELICIOUS!! here a photo of my son preparing the apples

We like making, and eating, basic chocolate chip cookies. It's easy and delicious.

cookie09 · 06/09/2016 18:27

Mine and my boys favourite cake recipe is Mary Berrys Iced fairy cakes. They are a doddle to make and taste absolutely delicious.

Heres the recipe

100 g (4 oz) softened butter
100 g (4 oz) caster sugar
2 large eggs
100 g (4 oz) self-raising flour
1 level tsp baking powder
For the icing:
225 g (8 oz) sifted icing sugar
2-3tbsp warm water
handful of sweets, to decorate

Method
Heat the oven to 200C fan, 180C fan, gas 6. Place fairy cake cases into a 12-hole bun tin, to keep a good even shape as they bake.
Measure all the ingredients into a large bowl and beat for 2-3 mins until the mixture is well blended and smooth. Fill each paper case with the mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the cakes are well risen and golden brown. Lift the paper cases out of the bun tin and cool the cakes on a wire rack.
Put the icing sugar in a bowl and gradually blend in the warm water until you have a fairly stiff icing. Spoon over the top of the cakes and decorate with sweets.

Try them you won't regret it!!
