To celebrate the publication of George & the Noisy Baby, we're working with Ladybird Books to find out which books you read to your children to help send them to sleep.

Share your favourites on this thread and one lucky participant will receive a whole bundle of Peppa Pig storybooks and other exciting goodies. There are also ten copies of George & the Noisy Baby for the runners up.

To enter our competition, just write in and let us know which books you read your DCs when bedtime has gone awry. We want to hear about classic storybooks and new finds – does ‘Goodnight Moon’ work for your baby, or is ‘Go The F* To Sleep’ more their thing? Share your stories on this thread before 10am on Monday 30 March. George & The Noisy Baby is published on 5 March 2015.

This competition is now closed!
And the winner is...
Anusia86

Runners up:
julker, winewolfhowls, melanieclaire2002, poorbutrich, lupus, clippityclop, KittieCat, Ineedtimeoff, hazelangell, mumtoason87

Special mention to SoupDragon for their lovely post about HairyMcLairy

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for contributing!

My daughters both love Julia Donaldson books and Hugless Douglas.

kath2 · 02/03/2015 21:46

My youngest, now just turned 5, has adored Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose...so much so that despite having had speech difficulties she (at 3 1/2) would 'tell' me the story using the rhyming pattern! She now loves all the Julia Donaldson books that we have at home.

WhatWouldFlopDo · 02/03/2015 21:52

Guess How Much I Love You and Give Me a Hug are favouries for me 3 year old DD

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/03/2015 21:58

Can't You Sleep Little Bear is a favourite.

I absolutely love Go the F to Sleep (especiually when read by Samuel L Jackson) and am very much looking forward to the sequel, You Have to Fing Eat. Modern classics but maybe not for the very young.

RhinosAreFatUnicorns · 02/03/2015 22:00

We always have two stories every night. Usually different as we go to the library often. But some of our favourites include Supertato, Room on the Broom. Tyrannosaurus Drip and Paddington.

polarpercy · 02/03/2015 22:21

DD is 15 months and loves the In the Night Garden books (great because they always end with going to bed!) and the That's not my books are really popular when she is sleepy. Particularly the That's not my duck because she loves the soft fluffy page! She does enjoy a Peppa Pig book which has a Peppa Pig hand puppet in the middle (not describing well!) but she enjoys it so much it doesn't tend to make her sleepy!

40th anniversary pop up version of mog. Kids absolutely love it. Poor mog is a bit dishevelled now after so much use. Not to to be confused with goodbye mog where mog dies, note to self to read back of book before purchase.

Greensmurf1 · 02/03/2015 22:47

Current favourites for DD age 2 & 2 months include selections from collections like Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs, charlie and Lola, peppa pig, mog's amazing birthday caper. At nap time she often requests goldilocks and the 3 bears.
Once last week, she fell asleep in my arms listening to Julia donaldson's a squash & a squeeze which was a refreshing change from nursing until she zonked out/ gnawed my nipple to shreds

Clawdy · 02/03/2015 22:53

I'm Not Cute! by Jonathan Allen usually works, followed by Can't You Sleep Little Bear? by Martin Waddell.

dimdommilpot · 02/03/2015 23:02

Guess how much i love you and guess how much i love you in the winter are DD1s faves at the minute. DD2 is not quite 11m so will listen to anything.

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 02/03/2015 23:15

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy is the winner here.
Closely followed by Bing Bedtime and Who's On The Loo.

Nonie241419 · 02/03/2015 23:28

If DH is reading, it's Julia Donaldson's Room on the Broom. If I'm reading, it's Debi Gliori's No Matter What.

ineedausername · 02/03/2015 23:32

Peepo! My daughter (now 4) loves it and knows it by heart :)

clippityclop · 03/03/2015 00:33

Our girls were both read to sleep by us both in turn, and loved The Owl Babies, asking for it as a last story of the two or three they usually had. It's such a lovely reassuring tale, wonderfully rhythmic language "soft and silent she swooped through the trees to Sarah and Percy and Bill"...makes me drowsy just thinking of it. They're 10 and 13 now but still remember, and picked it out as a must-have for their step-sister's baby who was born earlier this month.

LissieD · 03/03/2015 02:11

Dd age 2.4 adores books and won't go to sleep without a bedtime story. She's just starting to really get into imaginary play and frequently 'reads' teddies bedtime stories before putting them all to bed. So cute.
As a last story before sleep she used to really love Owl Babies but the current favourite is Kiss Goodnight Sam.

VerySlightly · 03/03/2015 05:56

My little one loves One Ted Fell Out of the Bed. We also both love Say Goodnight to the Sleepy Animals and Toddle Waddle.

I remember my Mum reading the Spot books by Eric Hill to me and my younger brothers, so I read the same books to my DS. Wheres Spot is a favourite.

wallers5 · 03/03/2015 06:14

The Hungry Caterpillar, I love my Granny, Alice in Wonderland and Where the Wild things are. Every night they have a choice of 2 books and would love more but that is it, sleep or no sleep. I was read to as a child and cannot imagine going to sleep myself without a book, so I like to continue the trend. Peppa Pig is still the favourite of the toddler but she can watch it on my ipad!

WarmHugs · 03/03/2015 07:29

When in doubt, we use Julia Donaldson. The lovely rhyming words always send them off!

Fizzyplonk · 03/03/2015 07:37

No matter what

Or any book with a rhythm that is read in a low voice for the last story eg duck in the truck or hairy mclarey. The rhythm/rhyme can be quite hypnotic.

Lilliana · 03/03/2015 07:57

We read every night (and lots during the day) but I'm not sure it puts her to sleep! It's a nice time to spend together and part of her routine so she knows bed is coming at the end. At the moment her favourites are 'where's my teddy', 'dear Zoo' and 'Toad builds a road'

AdamantEve · 03/03/2015 08:12

My 3 year old has a giant book of nursery rhymes which she always chooses and has loved since she was very small. I don't love it as much as I feel I have to half-sing-half-read it and it is very very long, She has an excellent repertoire of nursery rhymes now though!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 03/03/2015 10:33

DS 2 loves books!

His current favourites are Stick Man, How To Catch A Star, and Guess How Much I Love You.

I wouldn't say books send him to sleep but they are an important part of his bedtime routine.

BiscuitsForBreakfast · 03/03/2015 10:34

We love Tadpole's Promise (my favourite), Not Now Bernard (so funny) and the Brown Bear What Do You See and Polar Bear What Do You Hear books for their beautiful illustrations.

Ellisisland · 03/03/2015 10:37

George's new dinosaur

Zog

Dinosaur Roar

Can you sense a theme? Grin DS is three and likes to 'read' himself so he reads them once then I read them to him.
I just had a baby and DS tries to read him bedtime stories as well. Smile

Susangilley7 · 03/03/2015 11:29

Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner are favourites at the moment with my grandchildren. I love reading them as it brings my childhood back!!
