To celebrate the publication of George & the Noisy Baby, we're working with Ladybird Books to find out which books you read to your children to help send them to sleep.

Share your favourites on this thread and one lucky participant will receive a whole bundle of Peppa Pig storybooks and other exciting goodies. There are also ten copies of George & the Noisy Baby for the runners up.

To enter our competition, just write in and let us know which books you read your DCs when bedtime has gone awry. We want to hear about classic storybooks and new finds – does ‘Goodnight Moon’ work for your baby, or is ‘Go The F* To Sleep’ more their thing? Share your stories on this thread before 10am on Monday 30 March. George & The Noisy Baby is published on 5 March 2015.

This competition is now closed!
And the winner is...
Anusia86

Runners up:
julker, winewolfhowls, melanieclaire2002, poorbutrich, lupus, clippityclop, KittieCat, Ineedtimeoff, hazelangell, mumtoason87

Special mention to SoupDragon for their lovely post about HairyMcLairy

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for contributing!

Horrid Henry stories

FishCalledWonder · 02/03/2015 20:07

3 year old DD loves Say Goodnight To The Sleepy Animals and all of the Emily Brown books.

Munxx · 02/03/2015 20:10

Snail and the Whale here! And the Rascally Cake.

InAndOfMyself · 02/03/2015 20:13

This week it has been Dig Dig Digging as the final book of bedtime stories; it's important to say goodnight to all the heavy machinery.

I rather like Mortimer but it's not about what I like!

hohummmmm · 02/03/2015 20:13

Another vote for Dr Seuss' Sleep Book. I have on more than one occasion found DH sleeping in the chair when he's supposed to have been reading it. Best £4 I've ever spent! :)

Bugaboom · 02/03/2015 20:17

Ds is 2.5 and goes through phases with different favourites. But if bedtime is particularly difficult, Peace at Last, Whatever Next and The Tiger Who Came To Tea seem to calm things down again!

YerTiz · 02/03/2015 20:26

We seem to have hundreds of books. Some favourites:

Good night Moon
How to catch a star
Thomas the flippin tank engine
Nursery rhymes and fairy tales popular with both DSs (1 and 4yo)

Eldest loves Paddington, Winnie the Pooh, Julia Donaldson, Roald Dahl

YerTiz · 02/03/2015 20:27

Oh how could I forget! 'I want my hat back'

Teladi · 02/03/2015 20:39

We've gone through a few, many of which have been mentioned on this thread! Right now 3 year old DD gets 2-3 stories and then I deploy 'The Going To Bed Book' by Sandra Boynton, which is calming and short. By the time we get to 'they rock... and rock... and rock... to sleep' it's definitely bedtime.

lolapops1 · 02/03/2015 20:42

Each Peach Pear Plum is the favourite at the moment

Leeanne2205 · 02/03/2015 20:45

My little girl Darcey who is 2 is Peppa obsessed her peppa pig goes to bed with her every night she loves books likes reading book after book at the moment she loves Giraffes can't dance.

thewomaninwhite · 02/03/2015 20:47

Peppa Pig stories (truly) for DD3 age 3. DD2 age 5 is more Katie Morag and now the Holly Webb books.

Lovelydiscusfish · 02/03/2015 20:51

Dd (nearly 3) loves any version of Little Red Rdinghood. And also The Selfish Giant (Oscar Wilde).

mildlyacquiescent · 02/03/2015 20:54

Our kid currently loves

  • The Hairy McClary books (lovely rhythm, language and pictures- she adores the ones with the dastardly tomcat Scarface Claw)
  • anything by Julia Donaldson, currently esp. "Room on the Broom" and the new, lovely "The Highway Rat" (love these)
  • a very simple Usborne Phonics reader called "Fox on a Box"
  • a very sweet, older book from my childhood called "Just for You" (about a little monster trying to help his mother and never quite getting it right)
  • Each Pear Pear Plum- this was a baby favourite which has had a recent revival, because she recognises the characters from it more and more now.

It changes from week to week, though!

poorbutrich · 02/03/2015 20:59

Another vote for Bear Snores On! I love reading this as much as DS loves hearing it! It's got a lovely rhythm and is has some lovely onomatopoeia that he can join in with. Each page has got a picture of a campfire which DS always pretends to burn his hand on - not sure whether I should be encouraging this though.....

themummyonthebus · 02/03/2015 21:00

DC1 (4yo) is discovering the Paddington stories at the moment. He also loves anything by Julia Donaldson.

DC2 (1.8yo) is just discovering books. I'm enjoying reading Peepo again even if it does make me sniffle at the end Blush

leanneth · 02/03/2015 21:01

The Harry and dinosaurs series of books are favourite in our house! Peace at last is a good one too. We all like we're going on a bear hunt but we read that earlier on as it gets a bit lively when we read that sometimes!

Lolly86 · 02/03/2015 21:05

My DD 16mo loves all books her favourites are Rainbow Rob, the gruffalo and grufffalos Child, Squash and a Squeeze, she also has a fascination for her peppa pug book of school bus trip this may or may not have anything to with my Madame Gazelle impression...Grin no book makes her sleepy though Confused

Lolly86 · 02/03/2015 21:05

Pig not pug

starlight36 · 02/03/2015 21:09

A current favourite for the 2 year old is Night Monkey Day Monkey by Julia Donaldson. As with all her books it is easy to read with lovely rhymes. There are also several
references to bedtime and feeling sleepy to remind him it is bedtime!
'The Fox in the Dark' by Alison Green is another new discovery to us. Again the repeated references to dark and sleep really help to calm him down.

CheeseEMouse · 02/03/2015 21:16

My daughter loves the Spot lift the flaps books and I love anything by Chris Haughton. A Bit Lost is beautiful

lupus · 02/03/2015 21:19

The Very Hungry Caterpillar- normally asleep by the time he becomes a big, beautiful butterfly

boptanana · 02/03/2015 21:21

Say goodnight to the sleepy animals is a real winner in this house.

llewejk · 02/03/2015 21:21

My two year old loves Monkey Puzzle and Night Monkey Day Monkey. She currently loves trying to wink like the monkey in Night Monkey Day Monkey (although she loves more like a pirate :-))

CostaLotta · 02/03/2015 21:35

Anything by Julia Donaldson but particular favourites are Room on the Broom and Tabby McTat. I think I know them both word for word!
